So last time I went to bonnaroo it was hot as balls. I got sun poisoning and it sucked the big one. This time though I'm prepared. Been to the beach like 5 times already and been hangin sun's out gun's out at the skatepark. what have you been doing to get that base in yo' face? Don't show up on thursday all pasty there's not an spf in the world strong enough to protect you from the tennessee sun.
Druid is right. The effectiveness of a base tan is a myth. It's essentially gives you protection of SPF 4. You're much better off wearing high quality SPF 30 sunscreen at Roo than getting a base tan.
o man i have three friends going with me who are going to be pretty bummed to hear this! haha o well. at least the beach and the skatepark are fun places to be regardless.
Walgreen's 100+ sun screen works great. Fairly reasonably priced and works for a long time. I am fair skinned and have not been burned at all wearing this stuff the last two years.
UnFortunately I'm Irish, French and English. Tanning is not in the cards for me.
^ Fixed that for ya, my fellow pale-skinned Irish gene-havin' sister!
SPF 100 FTW.
Ladies, some advice on face sunscreen that I learned THE HARD WAY: if you have bangs or your hair parts a certain way & leaves some (or all) of your forehead exposed, SLATHER THE HELL OUTTA THAT AREA W/THE HIGHEST SPF YOU CAN FIND! Who cares if it clogs your pores? A blemish now > skin cancer later.
I just recently noticed a small patch of freckled (oh, I *hope* it's just freckles!) skin near my hairline on my forehead where my part sweeps my bangs off my face. OH NOES. Years of neglecting to apply sunscreen there means I have done serious, permanent damage.
PROTECT YOUR FACES & SCALPS, TOO!!! Nothing worse than a burnt scalp - when it peels, it looks like wicked bad dandruff!

Yep - sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen. Bring lots, and apply frequently. When you feel it baking off in the sun, time for more. Don't forget to reapply if you jump in the fountain or do anything else to wash it off, too.
And as holls said, do NOT forget your scalp! My scalp has burned along my part so many times and it's not fun. Either sunscreen it, or make sure you have a bandana or hat on at all times.
Don't forget your feet or your ears either! And reapply frequently under the straps of your bag/backpack - the straps will rub the sunscreen off, but chances are they're not always landing in the same place all the time, so if they rub the sunscreen off and then shift position a little, you'll burn - and you do NOT want those straps rubbing against a burn!
I'm white as a ghost and Coppertone Sport ultra sweat-proof 110+ SPF is PERFECT for me on the farm. In 2010 one of my 'roo mates got sun poisoning by friday (she thought she could go without any sunscreen on thursday, and that was a BIG mistake) and spent pretty the entire weekend crying in the car. We brought 50 SPF that year and we were re-applying constantly. After that, we all became insane about skin care and sun/heat protection so I found this sweat-proof, waterproof godsend! Even for my white a$$, I only had to apply it once fully, then onto my face and shoulders a couple of times in centeroo. You can get the stuff at walmart for under $10.
I have a base tan, but I will definitely be using plenty of sun block. Every year, there is a newbie in my group, and every year they under estimate what sitting in sun listening to music all day will do to you.
I'm getting a base tan just because I am conditioning for Roo. On my days off I drink beer while playing disc golf with my shirt off until the sun goes down.
I have plenty of work to do outside at home. Maintain the pool, cut the lawn, water the garden, pick up the dog sh!t. So I just force the neighbors to look at my physique while doing this. It helps keep a good base.
"A lot of us are probably under the impression that the higher the Sun Protection Factor or SPF of a sunblock, the better the protection. In theory, that is suppose to be so but in reality, studies have shown that products with a SPF over 50 do not provide any significantly better protection than one over 30."
I believe it is that you just need to apply it less often the higher spf it is however you will sweat off the sunscreen before it will stay on as long to get benefits from spf 100.
There are lots of links on this and studies but this one breaks it down pretty well. So remember to reapply especially when dealing with all the sweat, wiping your skin with wet towels, or dips in the fountains.

Oh and might I suggest NOT buying the sunscreen from Aldi's? The only product there I hate (spray version). In the sun 4 hours today, reapplied on the kids twice and they still got burnt.

HA! Yeah that looks better. Also when it comes to awful sunburn head peels...guuuuuuurl I shave my head on a pretty constant basis. I went out on the first hot day of the year a few weeks ago and forgot to put some sunscreen on the top of my head.
Shower: Ow. Head rubbies from my lady friend: Ow. Peeling: Gross. SO gross. IT WAS EVERYWHERE.

I work outside, Play outside, and chase my child outside. I've base tanned till i'm brown. Sunscreen helps, but if your going to go shirtless it wont hurt to sit out in the sun some before we get there.
