I am having a hard time deciding how to optimize me and my buddy's camp setup in terms of ventilation, space, and shade.
We have a 10x10 EZ Up and we also have a 10x13 tent.
We were originally going to just set up the canopy over the tent and build walls around it with tarps.
I'm now wondering if we should just ditch the tent and get tarps/sheets to make walls on the EZ Up for our sleeping & chill area and just have a big makeshift fort type setup; we will both be sleeping on cots. Wouldn't that provide better ventilation than the tent?

From my experience I would say build that fort!I havent ever really put up all that much shade around my tent but it is really nice to have somewhere cool and shady to hang out in the morning before shows.

Absolutely. Make it so the walls can be lifted up separately. Then you can make the most of what breezes there are and keep the wall facing the sun down.

This year I have rigged up something different. I have installed a close line type rope inside my EZup from corner to corner on all four sides. I have 4 tarps for side walls with shower curtain rings that so I can use the sides as you would a shower curtain. I will open the ones I want open and pull closed the ones for shade. We will see how it works on the farm.
Spring clamps like this are perfect for hanging tarps, flags, etc. from an EZ-up. They're just a couple of bucks apiece from big box stores. Good for S&M games, too. ;D

I just want to add that you should also have the ability to stake down the tarps that are down because the wind can pick up sometimes and you will want that wall to stay where it is and not blow up in your face.

Thanks for the input guys, I will scrap the big tent. Going to use white twin sheets and put grommets in the top, side, and bottom of each sheet to connect them to the canopy frame, each other, and connect the bottom grommets to stakes in the ground to hold them down.
The way I figure it, the twin sheets are 8 feet long and if my EZ up is 10x10, then that means the perimeter is 40 feet. 5 sheets at 8 feet long equals exactly 40 feet.
They won't reach the ground, but I think that should be ok right? more circulation and the sun probably won't really get through the space between the sheet and the ground.
The walls should also be easy to detach from each other to open up for some air circulation during chill time before going into the fest each day.
Gonna do a practice run Tuesday to make sure this will work like I am hoping it does.

How did you install the clothesline rope? Did you just run it taut from corner to corner and tie it off at each corner? I picked up some cotton shower curtains and rings on the cheap and am going to be using them the same way, but i was just going to hang them on the ez-up frame and move the rings as needed. Your way sounds MUCH more efficient.

My EZup has a place to tie the (small) cotton rope to the very top of each post in the inside of the ezup. Did not have to tie it around the post there is actually a bracket for this use on mine. NOTE: I made a device to support the rope at mid span on each side to prevent rope sag but it is probably just extra work and may not be needed.
My EZ UP comes with stakes. Should I bring extra? Also, what is ideal for me to use to tie down my tarps? I'm planning to attach them to the frame of my EZ up with zipties.

You can find these or something similar just about anywhere you can buy camping supplies. Also, bring a real hammer for your stakes and leave the rubber mallet at home. If the ground is too dry and hard you'll be glad you did.

Absolutely right about bringing extra stakes, if you don't use them your neighbor might.
Check out the circumference of the ones recommended here. They're great but may be too wide if you're using them to stake the legs of the ez up. Great for all other uses though.

Thse clamps saved my idea's life. Was trying to put grommets in sheets to wire tie to the ez up frame, then revisited this thread and realized I was working way harder rather than smarter.
Plus the grommets will probably rip out of the sheets in a gust of wind.
i positioned my ez up so that i could move it over my trunk to shade my coolers during the day and then back over the tent before i went to bed. i would move it around 6pm.
always use extra tie downs and stakes
sometimes it might be easier to move your tent than to move the ez up.
i dont use my big tent at roo. too much energy to put it up and a bitch to take down on sunday when im tired. NO ONE wants to roll up their large tent when its time to scoot. if you can use small tents use them. i like that they are more portable.
oh and you can get bungee cords, tarps and stuff at big lots. they have those clips things too. you can get the smaller ones in a package. they are good for hanging tapestries or things you may want to adjust. ive not had any problems with the smaller ones holding at all.
I know this is just the walls for sale in that thread, but you get the idea.
Then we'll just sleep on cots underneath. I'll raise the walls to get breezes etc as necessary, and bring plenty of stakes to secure the ez up. I think this will be simpler than trying to setup a tent under an ez up, because this way the chill out space can be easily converted to a sleep space.
Since this thread is dated, can anyone share any recent experience on this method? What benefits will I be missed out on by skipping the tent?
