So our Groop Camp plans on bringing in a fair amount of meat to grill throughout the weekend. I have read a few of the threads and it seems like if want to keep things cool the Dry Ice-Frozen Water Bottles is the way to go. My question to any of you who pack in your meat, do you freeze it? I am curious as to how long it will actually stay "frozen" and how you thaw your meat. Any suggestions/protips from people who actually cook at roo?
Please dont reply with "i just eat vendor food" or " i dont like the hassle of cooking"

It will depend on the type of meat, the way it was packaged etc... For instance, I buy round beef in bulk as sams and freeze in 1 lb portions. I smush it flat so it thaws faster. the thicker it is, the longer it will take to thaw. in a cooler, I would guess it could stay frozen for at least 24 hours or longer. the boston butt I smoked yesterday took 3 days to thaw in the fridge. should be about the same timing in a cooler, maybe a little less. Either way, unless you plan to eat it the first night, it is a good idea IMO.
I would imagine that the meat would start to thaw once you take it out of your freezer and put it into your cooler, a freezer at home is at 0 deg f and a cooler with ice is 32 deg f (at best).
Dry ice would work better on keeping it frozen if layered properly with the meat.
A smaller cooler specific to meat and other frozen items. I freeze meat ect before hand. When packing cooler I put items in bottom of cooler and pack tightly with paper or plastic around everything. Then I place plastic wrapped dry ice on top of everything. The cold sinks in the cooler from the dry ice and will keep most things frozen for about 3 days as long as your not in the cooler all the time.

The idea is to have a frozen cooler and a "cold" cooler. The frozen cooler will use dry ice and some regular ice while I replace ice in my "cold/beer" cooler daily. As far as meat goes, I only bring hot dogs/hamburgers to do on Thursday night maybe Friday. The rest of the wekend, I do simple snacks and sandwiches and fest food for meals. The idea of keeping frozen meat out in 98 degree heat for a few days and cooking it just makes me a little nervous. EDIT: And as far as defrosting your meat, put it in your "cold" cooler at least 3 or so hours before cooking.
I dont freeze my meat. I get mine from a free range bitcher so it would take the goodness out of the meat. I just make sure I keep it iced down all the time.

Just curious...what is a free range bitcher ? I have a confined space bitcher at home. That is why I am heading to bonnaroo !

A free range bitcher, is a constant complainer that has been allowed to roam freely instead of being contained in any manner.
the times i took meat i used omaha steaks. they come individually wrapped and frozen. they say good as long as they are kept cold even if they thaw. they stayed frozen very well in the cooler. i took a separate cooler for meat and only put the meat in that cooler so that i wouldnt be opening it. i used dry ice packets that you can buy at the dollar store and then put ice in as well. they stayed frozen until about sunday but were still very cold...i ate the remaining ones at home on monday because they were still very very cold at that time even though not frozen.
i always put a quilt over my coolers and i open them as seldom as possible. keep a separate cooler for other food and for drinks, mustard, whatever.
