The day before we leave i am going to be grilling chicken to a nice RARE and i will also be grilling foil-wrapped potatoes, then on thursday evening and friday for lunch we will have chicken sandies and a nice baked potato that will take all of 5 minutes on our small propane weber grill to heat up to delicious standards. And we will also be buying 4 cheap rib-eye steaks for friday nights din-din and then saturday will be a centeroo vendor diet. As for sunday i think we will probably munch on some snack food and maybe a slice of spicy pie. My group is going to leave around the time the shins encore starts, this way we can make it to nashville for dinner and some beers before heading to our hotel room in La Grange, KY, After we get a couple hours of sleep and a nice shower we will be hitting the road around 10am monday in order to get back to auburn hills michigan to see RADIOHEAD, And thennnnnnn I'll eat some of whatever the hell is in the fridge when i stumble through the door to my home.
As a foodservice professional I will go ahead and say that it is unsafe to partially cook, chill, then reheat something over the course of a couple days. When you start cooking something all of the bacteria gets more excited than a high schooler going to a rave. Standards for reheating food are that it must reach an internal temp of 165 degrees for at least 15 seconds. That is assuming that you already cooked it to begin with though. I would highly advise against doing what you are thinking. Our cooked and chilled chicken at work has a 3 day shelf life. My advice would be to fully cook it then chill it. Make some kind of marinade for it to juice it back up when you reheat it and it would be delicious. Our marinade is basically just pineapple juice, golden italian dressing and rosemary. It is the best chicken I have ever had. *Shameless Plug* The Chop House at 541 N Thompson Ln in Murfreesboro. Upscale casual dining with $7 plates. Do it! Being sick is one thing but being sick at Roo is a completely different monster.
Would it be cool to cook chicken off (or pork) and then seal it in containers WITH the marinade, so it is easy to heat up? Also, is cooking off meat then eating it cold ok?
I was not really thinking that cooking meats rare and keeping it in a cooler is a good idea. Thanks for clearing that up

Honestly it was far too hot to eat between 8 am and 6/7 pm. I would eat a poptart or a little can of fruit (MANDARIN ORANGES, FTW) in the morning and ended up getting spring rolls and pizza between sets. I was leaning towards the pb&j route too. Bread, crackers, and so on! I'm going to bake muffins before leaving.
When talking about chicken I should have been more specific as to what i meant by RARE, I want to cook the chicken so it is fully cooked but not to the point where it would dry out once you introduced it to a grill for a second time. But i really appreciate that comment because of the marinade I-D-errr. Now after i cook them I will vaccum seal dem bois in a marinade til the farm, and i will only be eating the chicken on day one, our food plans are about as stable as the weather predictions
Heres my marinade that i so often use for chicken, burgers, steak, and you can also syringe this stuff into a chicken or turkey and its amazing, here it is:
1/2 bottle of Beer ( your fav. kind... i like to use HACKER-PSHORR weisse) A squirt or two of mustard a splash or 2 of worcestershire sauce 2 cut&peeled garlic cloves Crushed black peppercorns Oregano a pinch of salt and 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice
Put all these ingredients into a small pot with half a stick of butter and heat on low until the butter melts, stir a couple times here and there.
After its married the butter in, put it into your marination container, i personally just put it all into a big ziplock bag then throw the meat or poultry in the bag with it and shake it around. After you do that (and while its still warm) put it in the fridge for a couple hours to marinate, then it goes to the grill where about 2-3 time during the cooking process i pour the marinade over the meat and just let it cook in the juices.

also, it's going to sound really silly but the little fruit baby food jars (they make them in plastic now). last year i was too miserable to eat anything heavy unless it was early. i also love these things:

I understand budgeting food. Big fan of Pop-Tarts because they pretty much always taste good to me. You can also get a store brand version on the cheap. My advice: At least try to have one meal in centeroo. You can honestly find good quality stuff for not that much if you look around.
I found out about Sweet Potato Fries at Bonnaroo and now I am hooked for life. Tell the people how awesome their stuff looks or how this is the one place you planned on eating at no matter what and chances are, they will hook you up with a little extra. Last year, I raved about one places pitas and they rewarded me with a WELL stuffed pita.
Also, be friendly with the neighbors you meet. Offer them something and you might get food in return. My neighbors last year made me and CokeGuy Dave sandwiches every morning.
If worse comes to worse, find me and I will hook you up with some food. Hell I might even buy you a couple of slices of Spicy Pie.

chop house rocks. i got the best dang salad there of all things
they DO have vegan foods. a pretty good selection and its labeled well. the vegan mozadilla thing is AMAZING. its not called a mozadilla but its like that but with no cheese or meat on it. can you folks recall what its called? it might have had pesto on it??in any event it was really good and filling too and not expensive.
i noticed several places that had the plates of grilled veggies. you could get a huge amount for like 7 bucks. id think two could eat on that plate. i think it came with rice?

I swear by it
wow that sounds good. ive wanted a beer marinade. thanks. i may do that tomorrow
Easily. Make sure your meals aren't over complicated. Be realistic that eating on a budget is going to require you to be at your campsite a little more, just with cooking times etc.
I've always eaten great at a fest pretty cheaply. Morning is granola bars, fruit, honeybun, a few things on my stomach n go. I cook one meal at the tent, eat one on the go. Easy things to cook, i pre season all my meats. Ready to eat things to compliment them.
Preparation is the key to eating cheaply. Knowing what you need, and don't need. Especially think about what you really don't need.
Avoid all drinks, and water sold. Pack lots of water. Drink only your water. Hydrate early in the morning, and at all times. $5 lemonade vs the $.38 water you brought....

There are tons of great tips and advice, thanks to everyone who is posting!! Thankfully, I found 2 tickets for 261, roughly 60$ less than I had budgeted for tickets, so it looks like food won't be as tight as I originally expected.
I started making a list and estimated costs and it seems like we will come in around 125 with water. When I shop I will post what I got, and after the fest I will post up results so that others can use this info too
One thing that I want to try to avoid is wasting precious time running back and forth to the campsite to eat multiple times a day. I am probably over planning my days, but I do have some general ideas about when I will be leaving and returning to camp. Hopefully I will be able to smuggle some biggish snacks into center so I don't have to burn time and energy that way.

I will be joining you on this mission. I'll have just about $50 for the whole weekend. Yikes.
I'm visiting my local farmer's market tomorrow to load up on lots of fruits and veggies for before and during Roo. Apples with peanut butter, grapes, trail mix, pb&j's. Even though they are super unhealthy, I'm bringing cup-of-noodles, because I have them and at night, sometimes a nice cup of soup helps me fall asleep in my tent.
To help with hunger, make sure to drink lots of water. It will help fill you up quicker. Just to be safe, bring some multi-vitamins with you, so you're not malnourished (which I deal with on occasion because of finances).
Definitely tell security you are diabetic and that should help you bring snacks in.
I'm bringing some old jewelry to lay out and try and sell on a blanket to help with food funds. Maybe you have something you can barter with people, in exchange for some grub! I'll be bringing bags of Starbucks coffee grinds and a bottle of Johnny Walker Get creative, and befriend your neighbors, the Roo community is the best there ever was!
My first year I only had like $20 left after getting there cost more than i thought. I'm a big guy and I gpt through till my direct deposit hot Friday at midnight eating only vendor food all day Thursday and friday. It'll be tight on $125 but for sure doable and whatever you do don't miss brunch. You can be stuffed for most of they day Friday off of brunch. Not to mention ill get you drunk as shit for free if you'd like.( and you're of age)
Yeah, I got a little lucky. There was an eBay listing where the title was misleading and I think people thought it was 220 a ticket for 2 tickets (440 total) but I read it carefully and it was actually 220 for 2 tickets. I placed my first bid with about 9 minutes to go, and it got bid up a little so I waited until the last minute, bid it up to like 240 and in the last 5 seconds put my highest bid in (326.34) and the final bid ended up 257 and change, plus 4$ for overnight shipping which I gladly paid. Total of 261 and change for 2 tickets delivered to me on Tuesday. Totally lucked out - and I have done the eBay bid game before so I know a few tricks that helped me win this.
As an aside, there was a pair of VIP tickets and a parking pass and the VIP package tickets and an RV pass that recently went for just over 500. I almost bought it, but I emailed the seller and he said he listed it in error. That he wouldn't honor the sale if it sold for less than 1000. Someone bought it, and can probably complain to Ebay. I doubt he will send the tickets for that price, but it was interesting to me nonetheless.
This thread is fantastic! I was originally thinking $100 would be plenty and then started worrying that wouldn't be enough, but to spend any more would dip into my savings. Now I feel like I CAN DO IT!
YES! Several places that are all vegan, and lots of vegan options from the omni vendors. And all the vendors know what vegan means so you can just ask (I find a lot in Ohio I have to explain in depth what I will and will not eat as a vegan, so this is a nice treat--buying from people who know.)
Last year my favorite place was in the stretch of vendors just outside Centeroo by Tent Only. They had awesome vegan French toast and smoothies. In Centeroo I had BBQ tempeh, tofu vegetable stir fry, three different types of vegan samosas, a vegan hot dog, and veggie pizza without cheese. Seriously, I'm only bringing a few Luna bars, some fruit, and some almonds for snacks this year and devoting all my spending money to delicious vegan fare

I did my shopping yesterday. We spent 96$ to feed 3 people from Thursday to Breakfast Monday AM. PB&J's, Turkey Sandwiches, Hamburgers(Thursday Night only), Sausage and Boudain for snacks/lunch. Bacon, Pancake mix, and pop tarts for Breakfast. Tin Foil laid on top of your grill can really give you a lot more options of things to cook.
Cheap Snacks to take into Centeroo: Animal Crackers Pretzels are usually pretty cheap if they are the store brand Check the dollar store for snacks...I found boxes of cookies and crackers for 1$ per box.
Sams Grocery if you can find a friend who has a membership has a lot of cheap bulk stuff. I got 32 packs for water for less than 4$ each. We paid 20$ for around 200 bottles of water. I buy Gatorade mix so I have something else to drink...Water is free so mixing Gatorade is a semi cheap way of doing things. It was like 8$ to mix 6 Gallons.
Bring some gumbo, etoufee or jambalaya to the Inforoo brunch on Friday. Especially if its as good as you say.
Don't forget the red beans and rice.
I might try and make some to bring with me....I wont have a way to boil water @ roo. I will be bringing some Boudin and Alligator Sausage to share though.
If one of you have a "make-shift" stove top...I could drop by early and that would give me a way to heat up some Red Beans and Rice or Jambalaya

There will be several grills and stoves.
I will have my Grill...It is a smaller grill and my big pot doesn't really fit on it. It will be in use for 45 minutes or so, and i'm not sure I want to use someones propane for that long.
PB&J! I honestly make about 16 total sandwiches with 3-4 different jams and that's about does me for food. Last year my corn munchies had me buy a few slices of spicy pie, but that's about it. Total cost of eating all 4 days was ~$25.
