Atoms for Peace- this has to happen, right? Thom & Flea on the farm together. You know Nigel will be there. They have a new album coming out soon. Thom has been doing AFP 'DJ sets' all over the place lately. Radiohead doesn't have a gig until Sunday. All these 'surprise' announcements supposedly still in the works, this bogus Van Halen tribute late night ruse, and no late night Friday Which performance...*yet*. One of these has got to be AFP, right? Or is this just my pipe dream?
It seems perfect. RHCP and Radiohead both on the farm. RHCP off on Friday night (and in Louisville the night before). Radiohead off Saturday night. Thom Yorke notably telling reporters Bonnaroo was his favorite previous performance. Atoms for Peace DJ sets. An open late night Which Stage and this Unchained band on the schedule
But it's just a pipedream. RHCP and Radiohead are two of the biggest bands in alternative music. Both bands are on two of their biggest tours ever (RHCP claims this tour IS their biggest to date). Unfortunately, an Atoms for Peace set would require more than both Flea and Thom Yorke stepping on stage at the same time. It would require a lot of rehearsal time; something I doubt either of them have. Not to mention, if they did get a late night set, either Thom or Flea would have to pull double duty within an hour or two after playing a headlining set (and both Thom and Flea seem to leave it all on the stage).
IF we're lucky, I guess it's possible during a Radiohead encore to get Flea to come out and slap through one or two Atoms for Peace/Thom Yorke songs before the rest of Radiohead comes back on stage and closes with some Radiohead tunes.

Yeah I'd say a one song sit in is the most well get... The AFP lighting rig has been dismantled, the crews won't be around, and I doubt both flea and thom have all the equipment they used to play the AFP tracks.

Flea is a beast. he would have no problem doubling up
In a year that's not sold out why would they keep this secret? When someone can give me a plausible explanation for that, I will believe. But it makes no sense from a business standpoint. AC is in business to make money. An AFP set would make money. A surprise AFP set would not.
I was thinking the same thing, but then it seems like the only time they could play would be late night Which on Friday, which would be up against FlyLo, and seeing as he and Thom are friends, I doubt that will happen

From the wording of Ashley's tweets, it sounds like something is preventing them from announcing the special guests. Contracts? Clauses? Artists' demands?
It's been derped everywhere and I'm herp-derped there's not a dedicated derp already for this, so herp it derp

Maybe an experiment in the marketability of the unknown...
Coachella's 2pac hologram was sorta minimally kept under wraps 'til almost showtime. Don't expect anything near as big for 'Roo. If the unknown was something really big, I think there'd be more press hinting at something awesome in the offing than just weekly tweets from Mr. Ashley Capps..

I just thing there HAS to be something going on Friday late night on Which, when was the last time this spot was empty?(asking cuz I've only checked the past 3 years)
They are keeping the superjam guests a secret which would be a sizeable draw for some people, certainly not on the same level but still
Big difference here. Superjam is exactly how you market a secret. You announce a show. You announce just enough about the show to get people to come (Questlove is leading it) and then people show up because their unknown fantasy is always going to be a bigger name than the likely reality of a top-third act or two backed by The Roots.
If they wanted to market a secret AFP show, they'd have put a huge *Super Secret Concert To Be Announced* on Friday night Which schedule and let that do the marketing for you. If it's AFP or Galactic, people will show to see what's going on because you've told them *something* is going on in that place and time.
I think when you live Bonnaroo as much as we do on Inforoo, it's easy to forget that Joe Newbie Bonnaroo Attendee doesn't have the obsessive knowledge of the festival history we do. They have no idea it's unheard of for What and Which to both be dark on Friday LN. They just looked at the schedule and said "Hmmm... shows playing after Radiohead... The Word sounds cool..." and that's probably as far as their thought about it went. They probably aren't reading the official Bonnaroo Twitter and they certainly aren't reading Ashley Capps' personal Twitter because they have no clue who Ashley Capps is. The only people Ashley Capps tweets excite is people like us, and they already have our money.

I don't know. Bonnaroo was getting an awful lot of flack on their Facebook page for having the Which and What Stages empty on Friday night. Fortunately (or not) for them, the complaints quickly moved to ticket shipping issues, and now everyone is flooding their wall with extra tickets instead of complaints.

It is almost sold out, however.
Or so they say. It'll increase the demand. They don't have to announce the sell out until after the festival begins and nobody else can buy tickets (or anytime now that it's too late to ship tickets; sure they may lose a few people hoping to show up and purchase). Then they get great publicity for selling out yet again.
