The tomato head! Food is so good and like the person before me a good steak dinner with interesting decorations is Ye Olde and Chandler's is the best southern comfort food ever. I would go to Tomato Head out of those. It's in Market Square and they usually have something playing every night. I know on Tuesdays it's Jazz. There are also some cool little shops right where Tomato Head is.

Sunspot on the strip! It has great food, lots of veggie options too. Wednesday is wine night. Half priced bottles of wine until 10 (used to be longer but state law requires wine/liquor specials to end at 10 and a neighboring bar ratted them out). It's close to campus on "The Strip" but it's not very college-y. It's where "tie-dyes and neckties unite."
Also downtown has some good food and bars. On Market Square I'd recommend Cafe 4 (best fried chicken and waffles ever), Tomato Head, or Oodles to eat. The rooftop bar at Preservation Pub on the square is an excellent place to drink. The main bartender up there is into music, too. I've only known him for a few weeks- I forget his name, like Justin or something? Anyway he went to Hangout this year and I think has done Roo in the past. Talk to him about music and you'll get great service all night. Tell him Matt who almost bought his Bassnectar ticket sent you!

the strip is actually a pretty cool place to be right now, with school out
if you want organic/whatever food tomato head and sunspot are both good choices. tomato head is in market square downtown. nearby in the old city if you have coin to spare (bonnaroo is expensive) i'd recommend crown and goose- british pub, great food and beer
Scary or not, Chandler's is where you need to be! They do some of the best soul food (their ribs are outlandishly good) and it is pretty reasonably priced. The place is a staple of Knoxville and a great place to grab some outstanding grub. If your not interested in that I'd suggest a section of town called The Old City. It is right in downtown and the options are fairly wide open. Barley's does great pizza and has a ton of beers on tap. Check it out: www.barleystaproom.com/knoxville/
Yeah, if you want unique to Knoxville, Chandler's, Tomato Head and Ye Olde Steakhouse are all awesome. I have never eaten there, but I have heard great things about King Tut's in South Knoxville. Supposedly, they have the best Greek salad in Knoxville.

Went to the market Square area. After looking at a few menus my daughter chose Cafe 4 (this was a Roo father /daughter bonding trip). Chicken and waffles FTW I was pretty beat after packing everything up that morning and the long drive, so we just walked around downtown for an hour or so after dinner and then crashed for the night. Again, appreciate all the suggestions. Overall, best road trip ever!
