Thanks guys! Sounds like I'm overestimating the amount of CO produced by the dry ice... that's awesome. Cold wine and carbonated fruit, here I come!
BTW, I'm a little behind here, but I feel it is significant to mention that dry ice is solid CO2, not CO. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is much less of a concern than the carbon monoxide (CO) you worry about in a sealed home or running vehicle. So unless you bring seven coolers full of it, as mentioned, or sit with some in your lap and never ever open the windows or doors, it won't be a problem.
I think I'm going to try the dry ice and two coolers deal this year. I have two Coleman Extreme 50-quart coolers. One will have dry ice wrapped in a towel in the bottom, frozen water bottles on top of that, some bagged ice filling any space left on top, and only be opened to transfer ice or bottles to the other one as needed. The other will be adult beverages, ice/water, and probably a few pre-assembled sandwiches. Should work out well, with no hassle on the farm.
Will dry ice freeze my beer if covered properly? I'd like to have the ice to cans of beer ratio as heavenly on the beer side as possible, but I can't freeze my beer, and i also don't want 80 warm beers to share at brunch. I'll only have one cooler, but it's a heavy duty 6 day 110 quart cooler. I'm sure ill figure it out, but if anyone has some ideas, I haven't used the dry ice for personal use before.
I've never used dry ice before, but from the sounds of this thread, whatever you put in the dry ice cooler is going to freeze completely? even if it's covered properly???
Everyone seems to have two coolers, the dry ice cooler & "drinking" cooler. i do actually have two coolers, a good coleman 50qt one, and a little cheapy i-don't-remember-what-brand-but-the-lid-pops-off-every-time-i-open-it one (secure when closed, just have to pop it back into place).
my plan was to put the dry ice on the bottom of the good cooler, cover it with a couple of old towels, put frozen water bottles on top of that and then have space for the water and beer on the very top that will be cold from the bottom two layers. are my top two layers going to freeze???
so should i just put the dry ice with frozen water bottles in the cheapy cooler and transfer frozen water bottles to the good cooler throughout the weekend? because that seems like a hassle and i'll probably just do ice instead....
also, for a 50qt cooler, how much dry ice do i actually need? and what is this "venting" thing of which you speak?

I've done dry ice a majority of the years at roo and it has never ended poorly.
We have decent size coolers and we buy to big blocks of dry ice wrapped in thick plastic, we put some frozen water bottles down, then some ice, more drinks, water bottles, ice. Only once or twice have we not been able to access important drinks because they were frozen in one solid block.
By the time we need the stuff at the bottom it has thawed enough. We've never once had to buy ice and we have cold drinks and food till Sunday. We won't ever go back to ice.
The venting thing is just a precaution, to make sure nothing blows up. The fumes/gases/magic fog of doom coming off the dry ice can (in a tightly sealed cooler) build up and the pressure can make it explode. You also don't want to be locked up in a car with all that stuff, so roll down your window every now and then...
BUT don't let that scare you! We have a 9hr drive we stop roughly two or three times, I open the cooler each time just for a bit.
These precautions and warnings are really just to remind everyone that dry ice should be treated differently. It's serious business, just be smart and it's well worth it.
Going to buy some dry ice this year and while I googled local places a lot of you guys are saying Walmart. I have never seen it there but I will be stopping by tomorrow.
Here in Tennessee you can get dry ice at Krogers or Food City. It costs .99/lb at Food City (I have to buy it all the time for work to ship labs). I took dry ice to Bonnaroo a couple years ago and it lasted all weekend.
If I remember right I did like others have mentioned and used a 2-cooler system (or more depending on your group size...I went by myself!) In one cooler I stored the dry ice along with pre-frozen gallons of water. I then transferred a frozen gallon or two to a second cooler which acted as a refrigerator for lunch meats and beer and such. Once those started to melt I would drink them and replace them with gallons from the dry ice cooler.

Cool. My local Kroger stopped carrying dry so I wanted to be certain that wherever I stopped would have it
Anyone know where I can get dry ice in Nashville? Preferably a place open 24 hours.
I don't know where you are coming from, but there are no Food City's around Nashville/Murfreesboro/Manchester. They are mainly in East Tennessee. I called the Kroger just off Old Fort Parkway (Hwy 96 Exit 78A) in Murfreesboro and they have dry ice and will keep it stocked because of Bonnaroo. It sells for $1.19/lb. I'll be picking mine up on Tues afternoon......I'll leave some for y'all

I'll be coming through Nashville on 24 E. I'm staying with a friend in Nashville Wednesday night then heading to Manchester Thursday morning so I was hoping I'd be able to find a place along the highway to stop real quick. I'll call around to the Kroger stores in the area. Like I said, my local Kroger stopped carrying it so I wasn't sure if it was a company-wide thing or not. Thanks!

You're welcome. That Kroger I mentioned is right off 1-24 at exit 78A. You can only go to the right at the top of the ramp. It will be on your left, less than 1/2 mile off the interstate.
