I saw F*ck Buttons in Philly and they were pretty awesome. Maybe you saw them on an off night?
Maybe, the sound was just awful though and that usually does not happen at the Ryman. They may do a lot better when they are not the opening band playing to a 1/4 full house at the Ryman as well.
As well as any of these: The Polish Ambassador DANGER The knife Royksopp Kavinsky Gigamesh Digitalizm Ford & Lopatin Gang Gang Dance Tycho Toro Y Moi Soulwax Parov stelar Trentmoller Modeselektor Opiuo Cassius Flume Blood diamonds Lifelike Caravan Palace Siriusmo Gold Panda Com Truise
THIS list! I wish I could get more people into Gang Gang Dance. I swear I've listened to "Glass Jar" on repeat since I've heard it. Also, throwing in for good measure -- Star Slinger is a good time too.

I'd imagine that seeing them LN at Roo would be very different than evening time at the Ryman. I've heard great things about their live shows.

I was also at that Ryman show. Sat through the whole thing. Didn't blow my mind but I didn't hate it like the majority of the crowd. Still, I don't know if it would be worthy of a late night bonnaroo tent. Many of the other acts named would likely put on a more impressive show.
I never fall in to the trance, somehow I just fall in to complete boredom.
Ha, fair enough.
Trance was the first EDM I listened to. I remember we heard Prodigy playing at Q-Zar one happening Friday night. My friend bought Music For the Jilted Generation, then I bought Paul Van Dyks "Out There And Back". That was the beginning of my electronic music journey.
I was into industrial before that though. Mostly Ministry and NIN.
Trance was the first EDM I got into, too. A friend introduced me to Tiesto when I was in 7th or 8th grade. He showed me some Magik discs that were out back then and I loved them. I still enjoy trance, although it's not my favorite. I can totally see how people can find it boring, though. I mainly just listen to trance when I'm working on stuff. It makes great background noise while concentrating on something.
its no secret. when it comes to “live” performance of EDM… that’s about the most it seems you can do anyway. It’s not about performance art, its not about talent either (really its not) In fact, let me do you and the rest of the EDM world button pushers who quackin hate me for telling you how it is, a favor and let you all know how it is.
I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what “ANYONE else” (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too. have a look, then let me explain:
okay, so heres me, in a big silly mousehead.. twiddlin a knob or somethin… okay so heres how it works…. Somewhere in that mess is a computer, running ableton live… and its spewing out premixed (to a degree) stems of my original producitons, and then a SMPTE feed to front of house (so tell the light / video systems) where im at in the performance… so that all the visuals line up nicely and all the light cues are on and stuff. Now, while thats all goin on… theres a good chunk of Midi data spitting out as well to a handful of synths and crap that are / were used in the actual produciton… which i can tweak *live* and whatnot… but doesnt give me alot of “lookit me im jimi hendrix check out this solo” stuff, because im constrained to work on a set timeline because of the SMPTE. Its a super redundant system, and more importantly its reliable as quack! And obviously, ive done the show a couple hundred times easily by now, so the focus over the past few runs with the “cube show” has been more revolved around adding new audio / visual content to keep it current.
so thats my “live” show. and thats as “live” as i can comfortably get it (for now anyway) of course itll evolve, and change up, but im sure a few key principles will always remain the same.
Im just so sick of hearing the “NO!!! IM NOT JUST DOING THIS, I HAVE 6 TABLES UP THERE AND I DO THIS THIS AND THIS” like… honestly. who gives a quack? i dont have any shame in admitting that for “unhooked” sets.. i just roll up with a laptop and a midi controller and “select” tracks n hit a spacebar. ableton syncs the shiz up for me… so no beatmatching skill required. “beatmatching” isnt even a quacking skill as far as im concered anyway. so what, you can count to 4. cool. i had that skill down when i was 3, so dont give me that argument please.
my “skills” and other PRODUCERS skills shine where it needs to shine… in the goddamned studio, and on the quacking releases. thats what counts… because this whole big “edm” is taking over fad, im not going to let it go thinking that people assume theres a guy on a laptop up there producing new original tracks on the fly. becausje none of the “top dj’s in the world” to my knowledge have. myself included.
you know what makes the EDM show the crazy amazing show that it is? you guys do, the fans, the people who came to appreciate the music, the lights, all the other people who came, we just facilitate the means and the pretty lights and the draw of more awesome people like you by our studio productions. which is exactly what it is. But to stand up and say youre doing something special outside of a studio environment, when youre not, just plain quackin annoys me.

^Good lord. Ladies and gentleman, Rolling Stone's coverboy of EDM. God help us.
Dude needs to go to a SBTRKT show and see all the sh*t that a real electronic artist can pull off live.
And it's also worth noting that the fans are just as into it and having a good time at shows like that. Maybe they're not all on ecstasy, but they're all having a blast.
He's a fucking idiot. Beat matching is "counting to four"? What a disgrace. Hes even right to an extent (even SBTRKT has a main live track running on ableton with some premixed shit on there) but there's no reason you can't add shit into the mix that's not just pre recorded shit. EDM producers are not a slave to MIDI, no matter how much it's been beaten into their heads that they are.
Speaking of araabmuzik, I would love to see him play Roo. Anybody here had the chance to see him? If so, how was it?
I saw him at DEMF. He's a monster. He actually had to take a breather halfway through his set while his hype man talked to the crowd. There wasn't even much dancing during his set because everyone was just watching his hands.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I saw him open for Zed's Dead in Knoxville. He was amazing but they had him on stage and you really couldn't see his hands. Half the fun of Arrabmuzik is being able to see him work. Monitors would have been nice or even his setup on the floor, roped off.

Luckily the show I was at had a screen dedicated to his MPC.

lol wow you haters really read that article wrong.
he was pissed about certain DJ's who "claim" they work hard during their live shows but were indeed doing nothing and he was pointing that out.
I agree. Everyone is citing SBTRKT as an artist that goes against what Deadmau5 said, but Deadmau5 never said anything against SBTRKT. SBTRKT definitely doesn't fall into the category of DJ's Deadmau5 was talking about.
And say what you will about Deadmau5, but I actually respect him a lot for being completely straightforward when it comes to his live shows. He knows exactly what he's doing, and he's not trying to pull a fast one and give himself that "mysterious edge" or whatever it is that makes people think an EDM show is something more than it actually is.

No, he was saying that's what ALL EDM producers do live. For f*cks sake the article is called "we all just push play." he thinks he's some hero for "telling it like it is," but he's fucking wrong. It's just him seeing shit from only his perspective, he even mentions the dudes who have craploads of gear and somehow insists that they aren't doing more than him.
He's a decent producer but he's a jackass as well. He's not pissed about certain djs, he was definitely making a sweeping statement about live EDM, and an incorrect one at that.
I know you think you're standing up for the little guy or whatever when you discuss Deadmau5 on this board, but I thought you were better than just blindly defending him. I'm actually one of the few Mau5 apologists on this board when it comes to his music, but when it comes to personality he's a smug asshole who just says shit to attract controversy within his respective scene.
ya dude RJD2 is a beast live. Never saw Shadow but also that Nosaj Thing launchpad set that's made its way around youtube from KEXP (I believe) is nothing to be scoffed at.
