Well...as stated earlier...we had become pretty tight on FaceBook...I mean...chatting most days since meeting on the Inforoo boards. Other people who have chimed in here...who were befriended by Shonda...have indicated the same vibe I got...that she was seemingly super cool...super excited to do her first Bonnaroo...and to be honest...the excitement of a newbie...can kinda feed into YOUR excitement. I have taken many a newbie under my wing...at many festivals...not just Bonnaroo. It's my spirit to do so. I'm generally a great judge of character...and as I have said before...I have this MAGICAL WAY of surrounding myself with THE BEST PEOPLE to party with at festivals. It truly is one of my blessings. Shonda (in chat) was, in my heart, just the newest one under that big umbrella. I am not wealthy...but I have been known to stick my neck out to the tune of THOUSANDS of dollars getting tickets for festivals, condo rentals, etc., to make sure even if someone was presently tight on money and couldn't get tickets right away, that I would have them covered so they can make the party. I'm all about pulling people together for a great party. That's what I do. This year alone...between Hangout, Strange Creek, Bonnaroo, Gathering Of The Vibes, Firefly & Wormtown, I think I actually had $5,000+ hanging out there on the credit card. I do this every summer...and to this point, my trust in people hasn't let me down. Also, I had asked her a few days before lift off if she was all set with money for the ticket and the gas, to which she was adamant about saying she was. And with my big ole trusting heart...that was good enough for me. My bad. I'll be the first one to tell you I OBVIOUSLY was mistaken here. And it absolutely will not happen again...unfortunately for the people that could have benefitted from my spirit for future parties...It's not $50 I was banged out of...not $100...I could let that roll off...but it was almost $400...not a small amount of money. I can easily step outside the bubble and see where I was mistaken...where my fault was in this situation...lesson learned...
As far as the "soul sistah" thing goes...in my heart...I just don't think referring to someone as a "black woman" or "black chick" feels right to me. Are African Americans BLACK? Are they? NO. To me, Soul Sistah or Soul Brothah is a more warm way to refer to my friends who are dark skinned. I work in Cambridge, MA...in a place that is JACK LOADED with people of all ethnicities...African, Indian, Haitian, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai and all flavors of Latino under the Sun. You should see our "pot lucks"...AMAZING cuisine! It is TRULY the MELTING POT America is supposed to be...and I LOVE THEM ALL. I haven't met a dark skinned person who was offended by me referring to them or anyone else with dark skin as a Soul Brothah or Soul Sistah...actually...quite the opposite, to be honest...So...if you are attempting to indicate that somewhere down the line I have some kinda racism in my heart...you couldn't be more wrong. We were actually supposed to stay with a friend who lives in TN the night before Roo...but we decided to not do so, because he has Confederate flags/"memorabelia" throughout his house...We were to camp with him as well at Bonnaroo...but also decided not to do that either, because if there was a sliver of a chance that someone in our crew would be offended by that stuff, it would have killed me...

I think what we're all missing is that Charmingfrog is the real star of this thread. Holy Jesus.
I haven't met a dark skinned person who was offended by me referring to them or anyone else with dark skin as a Soul Brothah or Soul Sistah
That's probably because hallucinations are merely projections from our unconscious mind that we perceive to be real, and thus can't get "mad" about anything you say, because they are as much a part of you as the words themselves.
Charmingfrog, you go to Strangcreek and Wormtown?!?! Those fests are in the town I grew up in, I go to every one! We should meet up and party at the next one! (I don't need a ride or a ticket, and I promise I am not a prostitute!)
How are you going to Vibes and Firefly, they are the same weekend? I'm still torn.

Hey...I'm just being honest...and maybe I am wrong...maybe "Soul Sistah" is offensive? Really? I mean...maybe it's different here in New England than in other parts of the country...there is very little racism up here...Maybe that same term in other parts of the country might not be acceptable...I'll ask my dark skinned friends what they think...and if it is offensive or even semi-offensive...it can be easily edited out of any future conversations. You'll note with my original post...I didn't refer to BLACKLILY as dark skinned or black or African American or any of that...because skin color is inconsequential to me. I only mentioned the "Soul Sistah" aspect when referring to the fact that I think there was a weird vibe between her and the other dark skinned woman that was a part of my crew...Let me ask you this...what makes Soul Sistah so offensive? What part of that is demeaning to someone with dark skin? I am prepared to be educated on this...so lay it on me... : )
Does anyone know if the bus trip ever went down? I just watched a ten page movie and the power went with 40 minutes left in the damn movie!
Apparently it did. I know that after Bonnaroo was over there is another thread where he loses his mind again. But I was on vacation that week so I didn't get to follow or partake in that madness.

CHELLAROO! I am now familiar with "HOME"...and yes...I had my tickets for Gathering Of The Vibes already...Vibes has been my EVERY SUMMER festival since my first one in 2008 (I always wanted to go, just couldn't seem to schedule it in with other things going on in life at the time). So...on the day they announce the line-up (which seemingly took FOREVER)...another new friend shows me the announcement of FireFly Festival...and to be honest...there is just something about a first year festival that gets me percolating on the inside...It was a VERY tough decision to make...as I had assembled just AN AMAZING crew of people to hit Vibes with...like...maybe 25 - 30 people...all from different festivals...all people I have partied with over the years...It is the greatest crew I have ever assembled that I won't be partying with!
Vibes is a festival created to celebrate and tribute Jerry Garcia & The Grateful Dead. And although I appreciate their talents and skills, their place in Rock N Roll history, and what they have done for the festival scene (in essence creating it), I've just never been a huge fan of the actual music. I'm quite sure this statement will generate many "Oh this cat is an A**hole" posts based solely on my musical tastes....but I am as always...just being honest. Vibes has a GREAT line-up this year...and I was THRILLED to see it...but most of those bands I have seen many many many times. FireFly Festival has ALOT of bands I have never seen...so...between that and the fact that alot of friends had awready ditched out on Vibes to do All Good...is what pulled my decision to hit FireFly...

charmingfrog, I know this might shake your world to its core, but the ellipsis is not the only form of punctuation. Commas, periods, and semi-colons still work just fine, and are actually much less migraine inducing.

Not trying to "educate" you, C-frog, as to do so would be fairly pretentious on my part. But I deeply disagree with one of your assertions....
I've spent quite a bit of time in and around Boston, and to suggest that there's very little racism in "that part of the country" is flatly laughable. Sorry.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Ditto...I actually did laugh! I just spent ten years living in Boston, and while I love my Boston peeps and there's plenty of good folks living there, overall that city is one of the most racist, segregated cities I've ever known. It was a huge reason we moved.
No racism in new england??? Say wha? Boston is historically one of the most racist cities in this country. It's slowly changing but still, to say we're immune up here is foolhardy my good man.
CF you also seem pretty surprised by the fact that when you spend your summer fronting festival tickets for young people you do not know from the internet that you will get burned occasionally. I can give you some points for style, but I have deduct a lot more for your lack of common sense.

Well...first of all...and with all due respect...if you are going to respond to something I post...much appreciation if you actually respond to what I posted. And what I had posted was (in reference to me using the term Soul Sistah and whether or not it was an acceptable term), that in comparison to other parts of the country, there is very little racism in NEW ENGLAND. I did not say there was very little racism in BOSTON. When did I use the term "immune to it"? It would probably be safe to say there is an element of segregration in most large cities...but that isn't because there is a panel of white people saying: OK...you people have to live here...and you people get to live HERE. There always seems to be entire sections of this particular ethnic group or that particular ethnic group, and I think there are several things that factor into that. One of those things might be the desire to live in an area with people from the same culture. I have been all over New England...if I walk into an establishment with people with dark skin...I wouldn't get that weird look/vibe that I seem to get when I am in parts of the deep south. It breaks my heart that anyone might leave New England thinking it was a super racist part of the country...I have lived here all my life...and hang with dark skinned friends on a pretty regular basis...and I just don't feel or see it. Maybe there is some magical anti-racism bubble wherever I go. And I still haven't gotten a solid response on what makes the term Soul Sistah offensive. I wasn't trying to be a smart a** when I asked to be educated on it. I really do want to know...an authentic attempt to learn more about something I might be wrong on... : )
