And I lI've on the other side of the state from bean town, just used it as an example. It's the same out here, I notice it much more with Latin people than any other minority. That seems to be nationwide at this point though.
Edit- much more racism against Latin Americans that is.

Well...here is a perfect example of what I am trying to say. For the Bonnaroo mission...the original plan was to stay at a friends house in TN the night before. I told him about my crew...and yes...because of the area and the possible attitudes on non-white people that is pretty prevelant in that area, I felt the need to mention one of the members of my crew was a Soul Sistah. And it is a good thing I did...because his reaction was pretty surprising. Some of the things he said:
"Well...they better not steal anything...cuz I'll be pretty pissed about that..."
"I have Confederate flags all over the house...I even have an entire room of mine dedicated to Confederate memorabelia...and I'm not changing a single thing..."
"Maybe it's not such a good idea to crash here...I don't want to end up in jail over a disagreement..." (referring to him thinking there would BE some kind of argument after we arrived)
If I was going to crash at someone's place before going to Nateva (ME), or Wormtown or Strange Creek (MA) or Gathering Of The Vibes (CT) with the VERY SAME CREW...I wouldn't even feel the need to mention ANYTHING about ANYONE'S skin color.

Well...maybe you need to hear it said with the warmth and love in the tone of my voice...and the fact that it has a vintage vibe to it...is one of the reasons I prefer to use it...Were there bad early-80's disco movies? I thought they were all DYN-O-MITE!! Uh boy...I might be in trouble now for referencing "Good Times"
I appreciate you sharing your angle on it, although I can't say I agree with it

I think no matter what way you say it, Soul sistah or African American or hey you, its going to offend someone. I'm not racist though, I have a color TV.

As a native Tennessean, I will go ahead and say the real problem here is your friend.
Please don't make generalizations without expecting backlash.
And I still haven't gotten a solid response on what makes the term Soul Sistah offensive. I wasn't trying to be a smart a** when I asked to be educated on it. I really do want to know...an authentic attempt to learn more about something I might be wrong on... : )
It sounds patronizing. It's the type of thing where if one black woman decided to refer to another black woman that way, it's no big deal, but you, as a white man, cannot just roll around referring to black women as "soul sistah." To say nothing of the fact that the phrase itself is outdated and archaic, and sounds like something out of a bad early-80's disco movie.
I've been thinking about this a lot today (between working), and I've got to agree that it's not directly racist. However, I being a minority wouldnt want to be called a vato, muchacho, papi, or anything like that. To me it's out of line and even if it's not directed at me I dont want to hear people talking about others in these terms.

We also had to throw out a local from our camp who was saying some racist shit while he was tripping balls. You can't get mad at him for stating a fact such as the deep south has racial problems to this day. Even though racism is prevalent everywhere, whether it be racial undertones or Neo nazi rallys in new jersey.

Good Times was the 70s. It went off the air in 1979.
Soul Sister makes me think of this and the needless Black Panther revolutionary ladies that the director threw in for reasons that God doesn't even know.

Two puzzlers arise from your premise ^^^^
1. Boston apparently is no longer part of New England (?) 2. All we Tennesseans are still segregationists and Confederate memorabilia collectors (?)

And what state did he live in? Oh yeah: Tennessee. JHOinTN...I KNOW there are GREAT people in TN...because the woman who we went to visit PRE-BONNAROO? She was the sister of the guy whose house we were supposed to crash at. AMAZING woman...full of LOVE for EVERYONE...regardless of skin color. In other words...my kinda people. She had the same parents as him...had the same upbringing...but had gone down a totally different path from her brother when it comes to judging people on their actions and their hearts, as opposed to the color of their skin. I wasn't saying everyone in the deep south have race issues. But there is a larger percentage of that in the deep south than in other parts of the country...and to deny it...that would just not be honest...

UNCLEK...Boston is most definately A PART of New England. But it is not New England. New England is made up of 6 states in the North East portion of The United States. Although Boston is the largest city in New England, it is but a mere sliver of New England...a very small slice of the overall pie.
No one said ALL. That is the funniest part of this thread...I'll post something...and then...someone will put their own twist on what I posted, so they can jump in...did I say ALL people from TN are segragationalists/Confederate memoribilia collectors? Is that what I said, UNCLEK?
I think everyone should just adopt my way of thinking: I hate everyone equally. No matter if you're white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Catholic, Muslim, male, female, gay, straight, transgendered, a little person, stricken with gargantuanism, a horse, or anything in between, I've already made up my mind that you're probably pretty worthless and I won't even consider treating you with any sort of respect until you prove me otherwise.
I feel the EXACT same way! It's nice that two people from opposite ends of the pay scale can have common ground!

I am very happy to have posted my Shonda warning out to you fine folks at Inforoo...and happy that we got some kinda warped & twisted entertainment out of it as well. In reality...it's a sad thing to think anyone has to perform sexually to survive...I truly hope my spirit has come thru here, although starting with the "soul sistah" reference, I have to believe I will be, in the future...thought to be a racist...when nothing can be further from the truth. You'll never meet someone who celebrates life's diversity more than I. I can only hope that if your opinion of me IS poor...that someday we meet in the really real world...and you come to the conclusion, "Man...I was wrong about that guy..." And on that note...I will bid you all a great night!! Have a GREAT FESTIVAL SEASON!!

Never?? There was this lady who would go to this grocery store I worked at when I was 16. This woman would have 5 kids following her, of all races. I bet she celebrated diversity a little more than you.
