Sugar, I agree. People in costumes, like the big Daddy Jellyfish is exactly what I want to see more of! I want more of us to "participate" and not just be a ticket buyer, but that is a longer conversation.
This is a very valid point, it is a whole other discussion so I thought that I would begin it... I did not notice it in this capacity in another thread?
Attendee participation in a more artistic, visual and physical way.
This was my first year at Bonnaroo and I plan to go forever more ;D My time and experience there was completely satisfying, yes. But... I do have to say from photos I had seen of past Roo's or how I had Roo visualized in my mind the people who went to Roo were way more into visual asthetics than just being herds of cattle ticket buyers who wandered around keeping to their clicks or who were plain jane and did not go outside of the box.
The costumes, hats, paint, glitter and things/people of such who I did see were out mainly at night and they did not disappoint. I appreciated what I did see but I had just expected to see so much more? Perhaps if they had a Costume Contest of sorts? I did not get to look too much into the contests that they did offer at Roo (I am a vendor) but perhaps this would drum up the creative bone in more people?
An example of some of the plain jane Rooers: I was working the counter for Dave's Mini Donuts @ the Sonic Cafe..... and after Thursday, you start to see alot of multiple names when taking food orders. The most popular male names were- Matt/Joe/John/Jeff/Steve & Jesse.... female: variations of Allie(allison, etc)/Jessica(jessi, jess, etc)/Molly/Karen & Meredith. Now, after a whole day and a half seeing all of these "mundane names" I needed to begin to ask for their last name initial as well. After that I grew bored very quickly in finding out that 85% of the attendees had the last initial of "M"... very weird. lol. I tried to have fun with alot of guests and asked people to come up with a flashy nickname/gamer tag/name of their fav celebrity..... ANYTHING but their real name. And I would say that 90% of people got literally offended. "Why can't you just call me Joe..." Because there are 1,000 Joe's here... and you're at Bonnaroo... why would you want me to call you Joe? Why not Darth Vader.... or Wiggle-Pants... something? Anything? A woman told me her name was Anna, I asked if I could call her Anna Banana.. she got a really pissed off face and said no. Ok.. that one I kind of understand because I'm sure that that this wasn't the first time she had ever heard that nickname before in her life. But people were very adamant on not wanting a nickname. I was sad...
Although some, were very energetic and very gracious either in coming up with their own nickname or asked me to just go ahead and give them one. Favorite names I got to take orders for?--- Dirk Diggler, "The Sexy Hair Couple", The Conquistador, Mr. Wiggles, Voldemort & Starshine plus I had a few Dan the Man's and Nate the Great's.

I think I can answer this thread with some nice clarity.
Most people up here know who I am by now. Wear the SAME outfit every year to Bonnaroo and thoroughly enjoy my name being called out (Favorite this year was one some yelled "Holy F#ck Its Pondo!"). However, there are some people who look at me, look at my horns and clock, and just truly DO NOT GET IT (Rolling of the eyes is my favorite).
To the people who do not understand why I let loose and enjoy MY Bonnaroo as Pondo leader of the Pondo Army I say this: I DON'T WEAR THE HORNS AND CLOCK FOR YOU! I WEAR IT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANNA HAVE FUN AND NOT BE SO DAMN UPTIGHT ON THE FARM!!!
So I love that you added some flare to names while taking orders....I wish more people just got it.

Oh no man. I saw you wearing your shiny "demon" mask and start pointing towards some guy watching Danzig. He looked somewhat creeped out and slowly turned his head back toward watching the show. I was just thinking that I hope you didn't approach me as I was standing around 10 feet from you.
I can understand wanting to have fun but that came across as somewhat intrusive... not friendly. Just as I don't think it's friendly to correct perceived "uptightness". The last thing people want is to be made to feel "guilty" for being tense in such a large crowd if they are infact somewhat socially anxious. Everyone has their varying levels of comfort at a fest.... maybe they just want to be quiet and to themselves and have an introspective time. Not everyone has to be an extrovert.
i think the , i hate to say, older group of us is just way more into nicknames, costumes, partying, haveing fun, artistic, wilson CAN YOU STILL HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! these kids dont have a f-ing clue

I see more of this sort of weirdness at Moogfest. A lot of people simply see Bonnaroo as another music festival, rather than a place to let yourself be weird. I DO wish we could bring the weird back, maybe AC should hold more contests, such as weirdest costume to pass the gates each hour gets a free ______. Let's get weird!!
Thank you Miss Dark Raven for starting this. Participating is something a lot of people do not know about. People are not familiar with letting the walls down and letting that "freak" out. Stepping out of one's comfort zone is a hard thing to do and just going to Bonnaroo could be that for some. Then dressing up, they might be hesitant for fear of being ridiculed or laughed at. They might not even have thought about it. Dressing up takes time and preparation and planning. I know with the Rootu and Jelly fish threads there were people who chimed in at the last minute with, "Awe I wish I had seen this earlier, I would have made one." I think it is important to get that word out. It is okay and encouraged to "participate" at Bonnaroo. Be creative! I think right now many people have the sheep mentality. I paid for a ticket, now SP/Ace entertain me, rather than, I paid for a ticket, what can I do to make the Roo experience better for all. I want to change that. The more people who start to express themselves and get involved and participate, others will follow, and then that person who was very shy, will open up and blossom like a new flower. I know most of you will say Halloween is your favorite holiday, because you get to dress up. Well that is what this is about, turning Bonnaroo into a land of dancing human candy. ;D
So besides this thread, How do we get the word out to let your Freak out?

I took my friend to 'roo for the first time this year. We're both burners and know about participation. In preparation we were talking about costumes. He asked how far he should take it. I knew exactly what he meant and told him that if he sported the loincloth he might end up on YouTube. His response 'I don't want to end up on YouTube.'. So he took the more moderate route of a Mohawk and kilt. If asking before taking pictures was the lay of the land, something that won't easily be changed, I think people would let go more. You get more boobies that way too. Instead we have a more of an 'Oh-I'm-so-uploading-this culture.'
I'm also surprised with the huge numbers of darktards. You can get a strand of battery powered lights or 'L' wire for under $10. If you are gonna sit down at night I think this is almost a necessity to keep you from getting stepped on.

Yes...I wore this to Danzig. It is DANZIG lol! I thought it would go over well at a Danzig show.
I had tons of people come up to me and love on the Deadman Pondo outfit (wore it at GWAR 2 years ago and last year a few times as well). One guy told me his girlfriend was scared to death of me. I took off my mask and told her it was ok.

Toolbooths.
The finally got the traffic moving in fast so an additional greeters station would undo what's been done. But if the people working the Toolbooths could say a few things to the arrivals that would help a lot. It's too late for costumes at that point though, so this wouldn't fully solve the riddle.
I am usually the only guy named Jesse in any room, how many of us did you see?
I saw a lot of sheep, not sure how many were wolves.
Pondo, that mask is a little creepy, so is Danzig, so they go together. I had the exact opposite reaction from a 3 yr old at Purple Hatters Ball. I have a rage stick. On the end, one side is a mask painted in stripes of multi-colors. It is very colorful and happy. On the other side is a metallic red face devil. It is dark and sinister. I was sitting down, when a little kid sees the faces. I lower the stick down to his level, just out of his reach, he steps back when he sees the red devil face. With a quick twist of my wrist I can change what he sees on the end of the rage stick, so I flip the faces over to the multi-colored face and pull the stick back my way a little. He seemed scared of the red devil face. The kid follows the happy multi-colored face and kind of just stares. I make the end of the stick move and made the face dance a little, but nothing form the kid. No smile, no movement, he just stares. I thought the red face scared him earlier from his initial reaction. I keep the multi-color happy face dancing in front of him, just out of arms reach. I still get no reaction, except he just stares, he has not walked away. I decided to flip the faces over. I twist my wrist, the red devil face comes out, and the kid lights up like someone who was palm bumped on the forehead by Benny Hinn last Sunday. The kid starts jumping up and down, smiling, laughing with joy and glee. ;D Here, I thought he was scared of the red mask and I thought I was being nice by showing the more happy face and in reality I was teasing the kid and being an ass-hole by not showing the red devil face mask. So people are gonna react to your participation in many different ways. Did you see the neon Borat mankinis? If not, be glad for that. They boarder along the lines of Shirt-cockers. As for Shirt-cockers, I guess every society has to have that "2nd rate class", someone to step on and shirt-cockers need stepping on. Either show it or not, do not tease people with maybe you can see now, maybe not, depends on the wind and how long and tight my shirt is. Strange shirt cocker fact: Donald Duck, and that whole clan, are a Shirt-cockers!
There will always be people who have not gotten it, yet. People who, want-to-post-this-culture-on-youtube. You still get that at Burning Man, a festival that lives and is built on participation, but that has only recently increased the past years with the more yahoos and people who do not get it, yet, coming to Burning Man. Just promote: ASK!!! Please always, ASK! before you take a picture!!!
I think twitter and facebook and inforoo are great ways to promote participation. They help organize pockets of people to dress up and express themselves in costume. The more people that do that, will lead to more people participating. I think Bonnaroo should make an official announcement. Promote a costume night or something like that. Rewards for best costumes. I think most people at Bonnaroo want to express themselves and break free of the every day rules of what we can and can not do/wear, all they need is a reason, a little push, a little encouragement. and that can come from the official:
