I did have a problem with the crowd. Not the kids, they were actually great, I had chats with lots of younger folks who were having their minds blown and were generally well behaved, aside from the typical fest amateur not totally respecting your space thing. But the amount of general unprovoked assholery I had to deal with from the general bayfest trash was ridiculous. Hate to be a negative nancy, was just my experience.
Furthermore, I hate to sound elitist, but I wish bayfest would up the ticket prices and book pricier and better acts. Higher ticket prices generally brings a headier crowd. I can deal with drunken buffoonery and that particular brand of selfish assholery it brings, but people that just yell shiz at you to be mean and quack with you at a show just to provoke you into a confrontation? My mind does not compute.
So in a lot of ways Bayfest this year made me proud of my city, and in other ways I continue to be disappointed. I believe Mobile has made great strides toward a more progressive downtown scene over the last ten years, and I hope we continue to move in that direction.
Here's a funny Friday afternoon FB status from a friend and another friend's reply:
Alright so it's one of those times of year when downtown is inundated with throngs of people who normally only leave their trailer parks to grab another carton of Virginia Slims and a case of Busch Light.
I like how you use all those fancy words to say, "white trash gone be out tonight, y'all"
Hahahaha drunken douchebaggery at Bayfest? No way!! It hasn't always been that way...oh wait it has.
People were provoking you though? Sorry to hear that. I mainly had to deal with stupid young dudes bugging me asking to touch my beard and getting upset when I told them no.

This was probably the most "fun" I've had at BayFest since I started going (five years in a row). I've seen better acts there (STP in 2009), but I went all three days, saw great bands all 3 days, overall, I was impressed.
I hope they stick to this formula next year. I am not a fan of EDM, so it wouldn't bother me to see them do away with that or move it to a different stage. I'd like to see the Coke Stage with 2 92Zew nights and 1 TK night (as long as it's the good parts of TK they bring in, none of this Buckcherry-My Darkest Days shiz)
But anytime Bush wants to come down to the Gulf Coast, I'm in.
The EDM stage brought a lot of hetty mofos to town though. That afterparty at the Box was super crunk. I was surprised at the amount of tour kids that were raging Mobile the Friday night of the fest.
They need to book a big jam band instead of having a friggin' DJ as a headliner. Pretty Lights was cool and all, but there is no substance to any of that stuff whatsoever. Doubt they get Widespread back since they are popular again (last time they played was with the "in between" guitar player, GMac). Maybe Allman Brothers (if Gregg is still kickin) or Flaming Lips (obv not a jam band, but it would work).
