Offspring - Smash and Bush - Sixteen Stone were my first two.
I remember listening to Smash in my room, not knowing some of the upcoming lyrics would be "you stupid dumb-shit, goddamn motherfucker!". Needless to say my dad wasn't too happy to hear that blasting out of my room. To my parents credit though, they never tried to censor my music. They talked with me about how things like that weren't appropriate, but I got to keep the CD. I refrained from playing that song in ear shot of them though
yeah, I didn't know that part was coming either, and I got a nice lecture about it as well. and 16 stone was definitely in the next "batch" of cds I bought. I was lucky that my dad listened to a lot of the modern stuff, and not just "classic rock" so he was pretty cool about stuff.
Vieux there was a music store near my house that had a giant listening area for cds (and cassettes!) and I had such little money as a kid I would spend hours in the store listening to stuff trying to decide what I wanted to buy.
Yeah that was the best. I discovered so many great bands that way. There were five of us kids in my house, so money was always tight. I started babysitting at 11 (and have been working ever since), so I would have money to buy the stuff I wanted. Music was always my top purchases.
My first two CDs purchased were the Pokemon soundtrack and Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe.
The first cds I bought were Nevermind, Dookie, and Smash (the offspring). I was ~9 years old and had to sneak the naked baby past my mom at the checkout. I paid with my $2 a week allowance, which means it probably took me like 6 months to save enough to buy those discs.
but I totally had a River of Dreams and Kriss Kross Cassette a couple years before that.
My first two CDs purchased were the Pokemon soundtrack and Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe.
Mine were "Middle of Nowhere" by Hanson and "A Little Bit of Mambo" by Lou Bega (which is actually a really fun album).
I had both of these! On cassette.
(my first CD's were the first Backstreet Boys one, Celine Dion (the one the titanic song on it), and Spice World. I was happy with 2 out of 3. My dad clearly picked out the Celine Dion one. )

The "Millenium" tour was my first real, big concert. My actual first concert was Hanson, on a mall tour in 97. What. Up.

UGH IM ALREADY ANGRY FROM FLIGHT DELAYS AND NOW IM SEEPING WITH JEALOUSY.
I guess I saw Hanson last summer (HOLLERRR) but still. I grew up in South Dakota and never got to a decent show until late high school. I guess I don't blame my parents for not wanting to drive 4+ hours to go somewhere so I could see a boy band or pop star. Although my mom did admit loving BSB.
I saw 98 degrees, boyz II men, and new kids on the block last summer, so that was kewl!
First CDs: 1. Bette Midler- Experience the Divine <given to me with my first CD player 2. Green Day - Dookie <Handed down from my sister who didn't want it any more on the day I got said player 3/4. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill Weird Al - Bad Hair Day <My first actual purchases (on the same day)

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

All I had to do to get your age was talk about how shitty Alanis Morissette is? I should have known.

It is one of my favorite CDs to date. I LOOOOVE 90s grunge/alt rock type artists. I don't even have Sirius, but I can hear someone playing the Lithium station from a mile away.

my parents would play it in the car and they would always turn it down at the "and are you thinking of me when you fuck her"

you do not talk about alanis that way!
Oh I think I just did. And guess what? I was an angsty teenager when she first got big and I felt that way then. I personally think that she is even worse now. What you gonna do about it?

My first CD was Billy Joel - River of Dreams. I used to have my mom's vinyl copy of Glass Houses, and I would dance around in my room. I still listen to Billy Joel to this day. It's so nostalgic for me.
If I were inclined to be embarrassed by music that I listened to as a young person, which I'm not, I guess my most embarrassing cassettes would have been Jack Wagner. I had both All I Need and Don't Give Up Your Day Job.

Isn't it ironic... that you didn't like her then...? Dontcha think..?
(Get it? Because it's not at all ironic. But neither is anything else alanis sang about)

I'm pretty sure my first CD was Weird Al's Running With Scissors. If I recall correctly, I listened to it at a friend's house and then asked for it as a birthday gift. I remember my mom was very disturbed when she discovered the inside booklet had some borderline gory pictures of the other runners.

My first parental advisory CD was Biggie and man did I feel COOL having it! I remember the swag I gained that day. B.A.
My first parental advisory anything was 2 Live Crew - Here we are album, which is the album that caused the parental advisory warning on music... I am aging myself again, aren't I?

I'm impressed with how good of a memory you all have regarding your first CDs and cassettes. I can remember the first music I loved, but have no idea what the first cassette purchased for me that I specifically got to pick or which one I purchased for myself after my first summer job or with birthday/Christmas money.

Signing up for Columbia House was a big deal for me! Plus, the lyric incident with Offspring sort of cemented it in my mind.

I signed up for Columbia House once, but have no recollection of what I ordered.

My first album was the black album by metallica on cassette. This was followed closely by Nevermind by Nirvana and The Real Thing and Angel Dust by Faith No More.

I had all of those but I had a lot of ithers before them. It seems as if I've always had lots of music. Maybe that's why it's hard for me to remember specific firsts. Seems like I was always wanting music more than any of the other things kids might ask for.

^^^ Me too... And at that point, I already had a boat-load of records and a handful of tapes. The only thing I know for sure, is that for my eighth birthday in 1983, I got Prince Purple Rain, Michael Jackson's Thriller and Duran Duran and the Seven Ragged Tiger on vinyl, and those were my first records. My dad had tons of records and good rock tastes, so before those albums, I would put on his headphones and records and dance all around the living room.

YES! I bought Alanis and Weird Al to get me in and then bought 10 other CDs from a horrible list for a penny.

Well now I feel inadequate...
I'm confused as to why he got The Real Thing after or at the same time as Nevermind.
