This Afropunk fest needs some afropunk. I guess you can't complain much, given the cost.
The word "punk" in the festival name is referring to the punk attitude than the actual genera of music that is punk. In this context I think they did pretty well sicking to that theme.
Once I get the sleepies out of my eyes I am heading out to the fest. I will let you know how it was.Kinda nice that it is a 5 minute trai ride from where I live
I might head there late for Janelle and TVOTR - free is a hard bargain to beat
I went for the majority of the fest. The setup was decent, but could be better. They had a nice selection of food trucks before you enter the festival grounds. The problem with this was they were outside the venue and once you left you had to go stand in a big huge line to get back in. There should have been a wristband system.
My other issue was with the sound on both speakers. The sound was crackly on both stages and the volume was running lower than they should be. Not sure who the genius was to decide to have the soundboard near the front, but you are not going to fix the issues in the back if you can't hear it.
As far my fave go, Janelle Monae killed it! Her vocals were great and her band was super tight. Incredible stage presence. Toro Y Moi, Reggie Watts, and Flatbush Zombies were good as well. I only stayed for a handful of songs for TV on the Radio just because I have seen them a few times and the sound just sucked for them. I give the fest a B- just because they have things to work on.
