Well, my plan was to watch some older giallo movies and then watch it. I went overboard on crazy Italian stuff and burnt myself out. I'll watch it here in a day or so.

Haha yeah I'm messing around. I just started it. Haven't seen it since Halloween. I think you'll really appreciate it.

I know. It's certainly in my wheelhouse and I need to get on it.
I mentioned this in the political thread.. I recommend Short Night of Glass Dolls. It's the best discovery I'be made in awhile. Unique structure for the genre with a relevant political allegory for the Trump age. I mean, there's no prest with sparking head-trauma but they all can't be Fulci.

Take Shelter = awesome. Michael Shannon is one of the best.
Neon Demon I need to watch. I've loved the other Gosling movies with this director. But for some reason I thought he was in this one.
Seriously, Nicolas Winding Refn is a director I really enjoy and sometimes forget his earlier stuff and how much I liked it. I need to check out the Pusher film but I've loved Bronson, Valhalla Rising, Drive, and Only God Forgives.
I haven't seen this since opening weekend. Does it hold up?
I had the same experience with this movie as I did with Hot Fuzz. The first time I saw it I felt "eh...it was good but Shaun of the Dead was awesome.". Then when I watch these other two more I love them more.
This one holds up IMO. I kinda forgot all the awesome fight scenes they did with great choreography and I have laughed a ton at some of the jokes I forget about. Especially when they start getting more and more drunk. This part in particular destroyed me on this re-watch:
It's better in context when you know the character and what has led him to this point but still awesome.
Also, in general, I'm a big Edgar Wright fan. There's not much he has done that I dislike. This cornetto trilogy, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim, Spaced......I just think he's one of the more unique directors/writers out there. Doing his own thing with his own style.

Gosling isn't in The Neon Demon, but Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks have cameos. Both are super creepy, especially Keanu.
The movie is legitimately disturbing and offensive. It touches on some extremely taboo subject matter, which is redeemed mostly by the visual style and soundtrack. It is, technically, a gorgeous movie, and otherwise a pile of filth.

Now I really want to see it lol. I'm sure it's messed up and I've read similar things from others.

^^^^^ He certainly did learn from the Italians. He even stole Suspiria's wallpaper. There's also Argento's eyeball obsession.
itrainmonkeys I've only seen Drive before this. Which is crazy because Refn and I share a common interest is trash cinema and exploitation.
And, yes. Shannon is amazing in everything. I love him.

Please watch Bronson and Valhalla Rising. Both feature amazing performances from the leads (Tom Hardy and Mads Mikkelsen) and are extremely unique movies. Was blown away by those ones.

He wore his references on his sleeve in Neon Demon, especially Kubrick, but also what you're referring to.
Have you read Story of the Eye? There might be some influence from that. Not sure.
Lynch movies and Sunset Boulevard too. I was mostly joking about your remarks that boil down to style over substance.. which is a big thing in giallos. As is pushing the boundaries of good taste.
I've never read Story of the Eye but I know the gist of it.
I kinda dug Take Shelter so when I watched another of the director's films, Midnight Special, it was driving me crazy with how bad it was. The movie started with a narrator describing every single thing happening onscreen, even the production company and titles. I assumed this would end but it didn't. Every. Single. Fucking. Thing. that happened was described by this narrator in detail. I'd heard this movie was great and couldn't comprehend how people thought that. This narration was driving me insane. I thought the director had a fucking stroke when he made this decision. About 2/3rds through I couldn't take it anymore so stopped the DVD. It was only then that I realized my DVD player had auto-played an audio track for blind people. An audio track that describes everything happening in the movie. I didn't even bother rewatching. That film is forever ruined for me.
Edit: On Neon Demon, I think I've said before that I really enjoyed it. The blatant influences and awesome production design, the unapologetic offensiveness of it, not really coming off as pretentious, the great music... loved all that. I did however find the script to be pretty weak, but it's totally forgivable here. Neon Demon really felt like an exercise in excess and bad taste, and it's amazing that it got a wide release in multiplexes along side the usual stale Hollywood product. I've shown it to people who absolutely hated it, and I've shown it to people who loved it. You really have to have an appreciation for trash.
I actually watched this for the first time last night. Being a fan of both Garland and Romanek I was shocked that this one somehow had gotten past me. Great film, and I really wish Mark Romanek would put out some more full length features (he's only done three that I'm aware of and I love them all, Static being one of my favorite forgotten 80s films).

This is really quite fascinating. Such a great mix of nostalgia and insane behind the scenes stories.
What really sets it apart is the documentary establishing the cultural differences that gave Golan-Globus productions such an alienating feel at times. So you really understand what ridiculous luck they had when they did hit on something relevent like early hip-hop culture in Breakin. Juxtapose that with thinking arm wrestling was somehow going to be culturally relevent.
It's also good that a lot of interviews take Cannon to task for their many sins: exploitation of women, orientalism, etc. Although you could easily argue it doesn't go far enoghe in that regard. Either way, this was massively entertaining for someone that grew up loving a lot of these action movies. I wasn't allowed to rent the boobie ones.
The soundtrack also spawned a #11 hit by Kenny Loggins.(I've listened to a lot of old American Top 40 w/ Casey Kasem in the last year.)
I have a CD somewhere of just Kenny Loggins' soundtrack work.
I'm not sure if I saw any Cannon films in the theatre? Maybe Breakin' because it was PG. I know my cousin and I thought it was the coolest shit ever when we were like 5.
I rented, bought and/or taped pretty much all of the major ones and watched them constantly. Especially the American Ninja movies, Over the Top, and Cyborg. I remember my Dad telling me he'd ground me if I ever rented anything as awful as Cobra again.

Noticed this was on Netflix Instant. I'll watch it for sure sometime in the next couple of days. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've had that Masters Of Universe starring Dolph Lundgren sitting in the bottom of my DVD queue for awhile. Haven't seen that since I was a kid.
