1. I'm on season five and I am soooo sad that I am almost done. 2. I give credit to Flanzo for inspiring me to give FNL a second try after attempting it a few years ago. 3. TIM RIGGINS FOREEEVVVVEERRRR <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I agree!!! I was kinda halfway through the 3rd season (or maybe it was the 2nd...) before I even realized Street hadn't been around. I said, "Hey I haven't seen Street yet?!" and then he was in the next episode. But yes, they're really great at keeping you engaged, and building on minor story lines so they become major, and finalizing major ones so you don't even realize you're more invested in the next character.
The point I'm at, I want to punch Julie in the face bc she's the biggest brat of all time. But my sis says she'll redeem herself/I'll love her by the end. Im also super glad that Tara is getting her crap together. I wanted to hurt that Cash fella.

Agree with everything you said, and would only add that the one constant in the show was Coach Taylor & his family. It was really just a drama series with a little sports window dressing, and that was something I identified quickly and was perfectly find with.
The fact that the show was almost canceled after Season 1 (which is why they rushed the story line and had Permian win the state title in Year 1, when the original plan was to have them lose and come back to win it in Year 2), and had to worry about being cancelled literally after each season makes it even more of an achievement. They found a balance between short and long plot lines that most shows can't do, and they were able to grow a cult-like fan base even though NBC did everything in their power to sink the show.
Credit Peter Burns for staying true to his vision for the show which couldn't have been easy.

I like her much more now, but I'm still not a complete fan. But I'm not completely at the end....

I didn't know anything about this show until my sis told me to get it in the netflix que. Upon watching I've (of course) read a lot about it online, and I'm BAFFLED that NBC would try to cancel after the 1st season. (Sidebar: but of course, TO THIS DAY, I am still livid with HBO and wildly confused as to how Carnivale was cancelled after season 2 when there was SO MUCH MORE story line to develop... [/rant]) I'm so glad that it goes on. I'm with Bonz - sad that I'm approacing the end.

I wasn't planning on telling you... you see him in season four, but I think I've only seen him in one episode of season five. I am many episodes in.

Boo. ...I will just have to go back and watch season 1-3 over and over and over.

FWIW, Tim Riggins remains a constant presence throughout the entirety of the series' run.
But he misses most of the last season. I wouldn't call him a constant is season five.
From Wiki: "Tim is seen briefly... <deleted for spoiler> ...at the beginning of the first episode of Season Five, and returns in the final four episodes of the series."

FNL is on a list of shows I want to watch. This, Mad Men, The Shield, and one or two others i'm probably forgetting at the moment.
I've seen all of FNL and all of Mad Men to date, and about 2/3 of The Shield. The Shield started off really good, but it started to get too ridiculous for me.
Mad Men isn't for everyone, I've learned. My ex-g/f couldn't understand why I'd like to watch a show about "chain-smoking, alcoholic womanizers with no respect for anyone they feel aren't as intelligent as they are."
I wish I could say that's why she's my ex-g/f, but it's apparently because I suck

Mayo, I went to bed @ 6am yesterday (SIX!!!) and it's all your fault! I just couldn't sleep until I finished season 4. Now I'm almost to the end of season 5...pacing myself since there are so few episodes left!
I actually had goosebumps on my arms & tears in my eyes when the Lions beat the Panthers! I also choked up in that episode in the previous season when Santiago said, "This is the first real bed I've ever had."
Riggins didn't impress me much at first, but now I *totally* get why you, Bonz & everyone else raved about him.
Oh, and this show might have been responsible for me voluntarily watching some televised college football this weekend, too.
DAMN, MAYO! You should've gone into marketing or sales, 'cause you've sold me on this show.
^^^Im working on that sales angle right now, actually hopefully I have a bangin sales position soon....
AND, you will cry for the last 2 episodes. just be ready for it.
I feel like the 5th season was a little smushed up, like they knew they had to wrap up story lines, but then I think about it and I realize that it wasn't really that way at all, I was just watching it back to back to back. I actually really loved how it ended. I want more - but it's that way with most shows that end... When I think of ol' Tim Riggins, I see him out there on his land drinkin' a beer. Looking hot in those shades.
Let us know when you finish, holls, so we can fully discuss the ending!

we wrapped up season 2 last night on our first rewatch of the show. afterwards i read a long article "defending" season 2 (warning, it contains minor spoilers for later seasons).
if you've watched season 2 we all know it was a mess, one of the biggest sophomore slump seasons in TV history put in even starker contrast by the strange excellence of seasons 3-5. while i do generally love the online TV fan culture, i'm not sure if in today's world FNL could have recovered from season 2. Season 2 ended abruptly because of the writer's strike, and when they resumed production they went full gas leak and just pretended so many plot lines or characters from the second season just never happened. Some of these were bad (Poor Santiago vanished without a trace and was never discussed again, we never found out why Tyra's hair was getting shorter in each episode of season 2), some of these were good (Lance completely got over his trauma with no lingering effects), but in the context of today's TV culture which demands continuity and consistency it's unthinkable to think of a contemporary show pulling this off.
But all that needed to happen because season 2 was so bad, the show needed a hard reset to get back on it's feet, and I'm so glad it did. We're just at the start of season 3 and they are beginning to more deeply explore the inequities within the school between football and academics and between the rich and poor people of Dillon. This show is super emotional. Similar to The Wire, FNL is a "TV writers'" show. The only truly touching parts of season 2 are the character development of Tim Riggins and the emotional arc of Matt Saracen culminating in his wonderful gut punching line
and when Smash asks Coach why he's trying to help him Coach says "because i need something good to happen."
writing and characters, writing and characters, writing and characters. If you haven't given this show a shot do yourself a favor and try it out. Love of football is not required.
