THAT'S what I'm fucking talking about... great stuff. Glenngarry Glen Ross is just awesome to see Pacino, Spacey, Harris, Arkin, and especially Lemmon chew up the scenery as if they're performing on stage for an audience a mile away. Love that movie more than even I should, I think.
I feel that I need to chime in that I own the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD, but I have stopped pushing for her to watch them since she saw the prequels first and stated previously that she wanted to see them 1-2-3-4-5-6 so she could see them "in order". This is an abomination, and I won't allow it in my house.
I have never seen a Kurosawa movie. Given my level of movie watching, I feel bad about this.
This is worse than not seeing any Raiders movies. If only because it's fascinating to watch his films and see so many influences of so many other good films of the past 30 years. Rashomon and Yojimbo probably the most after Seven Samurai.
But I'm especially disappointed, Dave, since you're a Star Wars fan and Episode IV (I don't know whether Lucas has ever admitted this or not) is totally influenced by Hidden Fortress.
Haven't seen, but feel like I should've by now: Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, Citizen Kane, Cool Hand Luke
Here's the order to watch these as you have the time:
Casablanca Citizen Kane Cool Hand Luke The Sound of Music GWTW
As to the Casablanca/Citizen Kane debate that always inevitably starts - I will say that Citizen Kane is the better made and more influential movie, but I truly love Casablanca more.
What do you have against Forest Tom!? Sure he's a simple guy but I'm pretty sure he was being CGI'd before that was really a thing...
LOL - I always get grief for not liking that one as much. It is a very good movie, but it isn't a GREAT movie. It's clever and yeah, Hanks does the slow guy thing well, but it just isn't as good as others. I don't even think it's in the top five for the year it won Best Picture - that would be Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Three Colors: Red, and Belle Epoque (last 3 weren't even nominated).
Edit 1: Nobody has mentioned Boondock Saints yet. Sure it's not an all time classic, but its pretty badass.
Boondock Saints is a decent popcorn movie. Fun to watch but it's not great cinema like some of the other items being mentioned. I wouldn't put it up there with some of the other "Best of the 90's" films that were named. I enjoyed it but feel it belongs in a different category.
Forgot about Quiz Show (and Four Weddings and A Funeral, for that matter, but I don't remember liking it specifically)... I remember really liking Quiz Show. I need to watch it again.
I made an unorganized list of my 100 favorite movies about a year ago, and the 90s films I included were (in no order):
Pulp Fiction, Boogie Nights, Schindler's List, Goodfellas, Rushmore, Perfect Blue (Japanime movie that Aronofski "borrowed" from when he made Black Swan), Unforgiven, Ed Wood, Lost Highway (personal unpopular choice), Waiting For Guffman, The Game, The Insider, As Good As It Gets (always loved this one), Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Pi, The Big Lebowski, Natural Born Killers (understandably debatable, I just love it).
Some of those I'd never consider among the "greatest" but most of them I feel pretty strongly about.
Edit: Lowerdeck, at this point I expect to hear something like that from at least someone when I say I don't like Fight Club.

I think it's more important to find out who actually saw the second BS movie and console them. What a steaming heap of dirty diaper sh*tbag trash that movie was.

No Usual Suspects?
Seriously. I lost cable for 2 weeks during the hurricane and re-watched all my old movies. Usual Suspects might have been my favorite re-watch, it's fantastic and getting to watch it with someone who never saw the movie made it even better.

You've got to consider this is out of 100 of every other movie I've ever seen from any other decade... it's not in my top 100, but I do love it.
Oh shiz yeah. I own this movie it's so brilliant. I wish more people saw it. Now I might have to watch it again this week.
Have you seen Satoshi Kon's other movies? I'm not big into Anime really, but he's one of my favorite film makers of all time. Paprika is brilliant, as is Tokyo Godfathers... his TV mini series Paranoia Agent may be my favorite animated anything ever.

Did he make Millenium Actress too? I thought so.
I havent seen Paprika and I was watching some Paranoia Agent, but I havent seen all of it. I remember enjoying what I saw.
Guys, guys. Please. There's a general film discussion thread for these topics, unless you're going to belittle Rosko at some point in your post, I think you're in the wrong thread.
I heard Rosko once stole a candied apple from a baby just because he could.

Yes to Usual Suspects, Waiting for Guffman and Rushmore as well.

I had a friend who bought it on DVD because he loved the first one. He hated it so much he almost gave me his copy since I hadn't seen it so its presence wouldn't infect the rest of his movies and makes them all terrible.

I knew the movie would suck, I knew it would be a half-assed story, I knew the acting would be half-assed, I knew they would introduce annoying characters, I knew that whoever played Willem Dafoe's successor would suck.
I watched it anyway, for the sake of getting laid, and it was not worth it. I'd happily return the sex to forget that I ever watched it.
