I guess the most vivid memory for me last year (our first year) was pulling in and seeing the huge green Bonnaroo sign for the first time, then getting to camp, setting up tents and getting so wasted that we did not bother to put the shade tent up... ...It was a great start to Bonnaroooo!
almost exactly like mine too. we roll in, barely finish setting up tents (actually got the shade tent up though) and are all trying to figure out what we want to do, 2 gentlemen stop by to say hi, and very shortly we no longer had to figure out what to do anymore at which point the limitless possibilities of bonnaroo became extremely clear heh
Makes me wonder which camp you were in - because that is the EXACT same thing that happened - LOL
^^^ Pretty eerie. Same thing with us. Some fun guys.
Does anyone remember after the Superjam last year, when that fuckin guy was jumping up and down on all the porta-potties, like an entire row of them? He was going nuts, and everyone was cheering him on. It happened so long we eventually got bored of it and walked away, and I never saw security anywhere. I don't even know if anyone ever made him stop.
Last year towards the beginning of Phil Lesh, there was a guy next to me rocking out in a full on batman outfit. Amidst the thousands of glowsticks flying around, there were also dozens of big inflatable dolls bouncing around in the crowd. Low and behold, a lifesize spider man blow up doll comes flying in out of nowhere, landing directly into Batman's arms. Batman interpreted this as a challenge, engaging in battle with Spiderman. The crowd opened up for the superhero throwdown / 1 man and an inflatable doll mosh pit. Batman walked away victorious, tearing the spider man doll to pieces and then vanished into the crowd.

come to think of it ....my friend saw that whole batman thing....I thnk we were actually really close to him...But sadly I missed it. I'll have to remind him about it....
2 memories: 1st: Front row for radiohead. I was right under the R in the BonnaRoo sign. Thom Yorke and I were staring at each other for atleast 20 seconds without losing eye contact with our hand out stretched towards each other. He was "moaning". I forget what song it was; it was the one where everyone had their hands up in the air. It was about about 1/4th the way through his set or maybe 1/2. Cant wait for the DVD.
or are really tiny...? I was only a few rows back so if a dvd comes out I'll be there too....plus I'm tall. I could've sworn he was starring at me too! haha seriously... That was the most amazing experience ever....best show ever!
in 04 it had to either be the drum parade on thursday night or 'the dead' and two mile walk back to our tents...you guys can imagine a giggle filled stumble back through shakedown after shakedown...amazing.
or in 06 when we danced like maniacs to radiohead and saturday late night loosing myself in the centeroo lineup: dr.john, superjam, and opening my eyes only to see the sunrising to beats of sasha.
come to think of it, every minute i'm there is freakin' amazing...
My favorite memory is from 2004. Saturday night around 3 or 4am, after the torrential rain had subsided, the mud had gotten intense and people were walking through smelly, knee deep mud. By this time I noticed that directly under the Centeroo arch and right in the middle of the path was a three foot puddle. I sat down next to the Centeroo arch on a lawn chair I found lying around nearby and watched for 45 minutes as oblivious Bonnarooers stepped in the puddle. They would all just unexpectedly sink three feet into the mud. It was priceless. Later, a guy paid a girl $10 to bellyflop in the mud and wallow around in it for a few seconds. Good times...
^^^^^^^ OMG, I did the same exact thing!!! I'm not sure if it was the same exact puddle, but it was definitely near the arch. The best part though was there was this big group of kids that were all standing next to the puddle and everytime somebody was about to walk in it they would scream at the top of there lungs "WATCH OUT!!!!!" and just about every single time the people walking into the puddle would give them this stoned glare and just walk right into it. Then the guys would laugh and help them out. It was hilarious!!!!
"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made." Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Soul of Man Under Socialism
"You're either on the bus or off the bus." Ken Kesey
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson
thanks to the stolen items thread for jogging my memory on this one ok, so me and my friends are hitting various sets throughout the day in centeroo on saturday and me and another guy are heading back from damien marley@which and meet up with another 2-3 from my group at blues traveler@this. we stay for a bit and one of the group really wants to hit mmw@the other since its close, so we all agree to go check it out but figure we'll come back before blues traveler is done (i think to run through the fountain on the way to claypool@that?)
now, one of them has this red light fleece blanket maybe 6' x 9' that he's putting down for us to chill on/drop our gear on etc. each set we stop to see. so as we're getting up to leave blues traveler, he sighs, wearily stands and looks at the blanket and declares, " i don't feel like carrying this over there to bring it back in like an hour or so." so another friend suggests, in a rather giggly voice, to just leave it at blues traveler to 'claim our spot'. now, we're not really that close to the stage (just outside the tent at the back right corner i believe) but people were definitely still filling up slowly, and i'm thinking:
1) if we leave a bright red blanket all spread out this close, there's not a chance in hell its still going to be here when we return, and 2) even if we did somehow return to find the blanket still there, our spot would be long crowded over by then
but the guy who's blanket it was kind of looks up and chuckles a bit himself and off we go! so we leave mmw and head back over to blues traveler and people have definitely filled up more than when we'd left. so we're doing the typical festival 'i'm-wandering-around-looking-for-my-stuff / friends-but-clearly-have-no-idea-where-they-are' shuffle through the crowd towards where we thought we were sitting for a few minutes and 'lo and behold, i spot a guy chilling on the ground kind of half-sitting on a crumpled, grass-covered red blanket (it was grass-covered before we left it ;D)
so i wander over and ask him if the blanket had been there before he sat down. he looked up at me and kind of half-smiled, nodded and said yeah. i told him we had left it there from before and asked if i could have it and he just handed it over with another droopy half-smile. we ended up giving him something like a bottle of water or a cigarette out of gratitude and went on our merry way
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
at radiohead, my girl was fung eyed out and couldn't handle the standing up aspect of seeing music... so we sat down next to these guys from colorado and ended up chilling smokin and talkin with them the whole time (they weren't really in to the radiohead show either)
but we put our blankets together and ended up with a really big area to chill
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

My most vivid memory what Oysterhead. When I saw they would be there I WAS SOLD!!! I had been listening to that album since I got into Les's stuff in 2002 and new I had to catch them at least once. It was a two-hour orgasm. Actually, it was better than a two-hour orgasm.

Ha Ha I'm supposed to be writing a paper on a neo-classical painter from France, I just can't bring myself to finish writing it. It's due tomorrow and I still have to make a 4 hour trip back to school. Looks like I'll be up late and waking up early to finish it.

Totally!!!!! I can remember laying with my girlfriend on the ground staring up at the sky and hearing the Les croaking Jail House Rock. I was gut laughing and saw some guy with an expensive camera and a press pass taking my picture. I wish i could see that pic!!!
one of the best roo memories i have was in 04 on sunday (i think). this was before the what stage crowd area was expanded and VIP was placed directly in front of it, so we could watch and hear the shows from our camp site all day. the epic rainstorm left behind a ton of mud puddles in between our site and the "fries 'n' shine" stand. so we took all our extra tarps and made a ghetto slip & slide and held contests for style, distance, and hotness. that was a good time.
Everything, from the moment my friend told me to go... to the getting the tickets for my birthday... too the months of reading this website... too the days leading up + driving + everything + everything + everything

I have lot's of amazing Roo memories, from my first time and waiting in 10 hour traffic sitting on the top of the car playing guitar to flying in for my third year and putting my tent up directly infront of What Stage. My favorite Roo Shows of ALL TIME... STS9 late night 04 and Primus... So sick The Allman Brothers playing blue sky into Franklin's tower in 05 ( I was out of my mind that day) SCSI in 04 and last year I really took it upon myself to meet anyone I could and ended up playing in a drum circle late night Sunday for hours apon end. It was amazing.

last year was my first roo and i think i spent more time just absorbing all that was around me more than anything... we saw some great shows (trying to narrow down my favorite is impossible) but i loved the entire atmosphere... do anything you want, any time you want, as long as you don't hurt yourself or someone else... walk, talk, listen, look, hear, see, feel... all of it

My First Roo was in 2006. I remember going to My Morning Jacket's late night set. They were playing a great set, and then they started playing Wordless Chorus, and right as the chorus started with the " aaaaoooaaaaahh"'s , hundreds of glow sticks flew up into the air. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I dont know why but it made me soooooooo happy. I had the biggest smile on my face for the rest of that show. That's probably one of my happiest roo moments, and what makes me want to go back every year.
Just read all of these and would love to hear some memories from recent years!
I have two vivid, probably lame memories from last year to get the ball rolling again: 1) Still ridding the wave of euphoria from seeing Sir Paul and from the euphoria supplement I had taken many hours prior, I eventually found myself sitting peacefully against a tree near the stage Animal Collective was about to play, just after The xx had finished. I knew I wasn't going to find my brother or friends again until I made it back to camp, so I figured I would watch the night go by for a while before AnCo started playing. I got a little cold and they just started so I made my way to the back to dance around with some beautiful strangers. The first thing I noticed was that everyone's faces looked so addled and zombie-like that I couldn't have felt more outside of reality. The euphoria supplement surely had a hand in that. Getting more comfortable with the fact that I probably looked quacking addled myself, I danced around until I was nice and warm in the blanket that is Bonnaroo's love and I turn fully back towards the stage and I see two pairs of girls in front of me standing right next to each other. The pair on the left had bleach blonde hair, were standing perfectly upright, were taller and had the same white sundress on with a nice blue belt. The pair to the right were shorter, sort of hunkered down, heads bobbing, dancing around, wearing brown drug rugs, dirty messed up brown hair. I don't know if I stopped dancing, but I vividly remember the feeling of joy I felt when I saw a visual manifestation of juxtaposing humans. 2) After Sir Paul finished, several thousand people had to pee. I imagine plenty of you have experienced the following before, but I was unfamiliar with the mud river one must cross in order to get to the other side of the stage area. I made it to the edge with my two of my friends (I had already lost my brother by this point) and everyone behind us was inadvertently pushing us because the people behind them were inadvertently pushing them, etc. We used all the strength in our left legs to hold our ground without falling in as we traversed the edge to get to what may as well be called a bridge. One of my friends didn't have the strength to distract his mind anymore so he looked out over the river to the people on the other side trying to collect their friends and just yelled "Quack it!" and ran through to the other side of the restrooms. I didn't see him until I made it home around 6am.
