Hey all,
We are working on a new concept, called Project Shelter, that provides a carefree festival camping experience and way to donate tents to refugee camps. www.projectshelter.org
Buy awesome gear. Right at the festival. -Reserve ahead and pick up when you arrive -Durable tents, sleeping bags, tarps, chairs, and more. -Option to return the tent at the end of the festival and Project Shelter will donate it to refugee camps.
Confirmed for these festivals in 2013:
AURA Music & Arts (Feb 15-17) Telluride Blues & Brews (Sept 13-15) Snowmass Mammoth Fest (TBA)

Sounds like a neat enough idea, but not sure why OP deleted their account after posting.... Locking unless OP comes back to clarify their actions. Seems odd.

Hey all,
I'm Nick from Project Shelter. We are real, and are looking to roll this camping service out in 2013. Help us raise some traction!!!!
This is a way to both make your camping experience easier, and at the same time conveniently give back to displaced people around the world.
We have partnered with Feed the Children, a nonprofit organization, who will handle all the tents, so you can be sure our primary goal is to help shelter refugees. Thanks so much.
Great idea. Would you guys also accept used tents for donations? Lots of people just ditch theirs on Monday.
Absolutely, that is an awesome idea. We will make sure that feature is available. We are a very new startup, and we want to make sure that we are in touch with what the community actually wants, so keep the ideas comin guys!!!
If i dont get back to anyone as quick as they may like, shoot me an email at info@projectshelter.org

Thanks sarah, we would love if you would spread the word. Also go to our website and submit that form...it's non-binding, just basically reserves you first dibs on a tent if you do decide that you will be at one of the festivals. I promise I wont spam you, just use your email to keep you informed as we roll out.
Go ahead and put any festival in if you arent sure, I'm gonna add that option on the form right now.
I think you guys are doing something cool here. Before I signed up I'd want to hear you address a couple of possible issues.
1) Imagine you're a customer showing up at the festival and needing to pick up your tent. You have to find out where to go, get there (potentially a very long hike), show up, wait in line (how long?), pick your tent up, check it, hump it back to wherever you parked, and shoehorn it into whatever space is left behind your car (because everybody all around you jumped out of their vehicles and started jamming their camping gear together the moment their feet hit the ground.) Also: are these tents going to be available in BFE on Wednesday afternoon/evening/overnight? If not, more problems.
2) It's wise when you get a new tent to set it up in your backyard a time or two so you won't have to waste time effing around getting familiar with it when you get to the festival. Also, many tents require you to seamgrip them before they're truly "waterproof," which is another reason why you'd want to pick your tent up before the festival instead of at it.
Again, I think you're onto something cool. And apparently a lot of other people think so too, because it looks like you've already signed up more than 500 people.

Those are all valid concerns, and before I respond, I want to let you know that next year will be our debut fest season, so we will always be trying to tinker and tailor the experience based upon your feedback. So first, thank you very much for taking the time to give such thoughtful insight.
In regards to long lines and expediting the pickup process, there are opportunities for innovation that are enabled by the preorder system. Since most people will have already prepaid, we can potentially tag the tents with a barcode, so the process can be quick and easy.
The issue with having to walk to the pickup site and then back to the car is interesting and is something I will have to brainstorm to hopefully get a solution. Right now I am thinking possibly having multiple pickup locations close to the camping area, so that no people are too far away.
Maybe even a mobile distribution platform, like a wagon or something. We could create an app that you guys could sign up for that would feed us your location via gps on your smartphone, and we could come to you. Something like that will have significant development costs, so could take a little more time than other easier problems to fix.
Concerning the quality of the tents, we will work with our supplying partner to make sure that the tents are waterproof, and even give customers some seam tape in the package.
About the difficulty of putting tents together, we can make sure that we include a sweet, clear instructions booklet with color pictures. We could also post a video on our website and youtube of one of us putting the tent together. Also, when we work with suppliers, both durability and ease of assembly will be things we make sure to be aware of.
On the subject of having tents available at BFE, do you mean having tents available for purchase for people who did not preorder. We will most likely have extras, for purchase and in case someone falls through your tent in the middle of the night and breaks it. We really do want to push the preorders though, because it will really help us manage our inventory. Again I am not quite sure what you meant there, so if I didnt answer your question (which is entirely possible) then let me know. Thanks again for the feedback

Also guys, we are getting a lot of feedback, so if you anyone asks a question does not receive a response, then we may not have seen it. If that happens go ahead and pm me, or ideally, send me an email at info@projectshelter.org.

This seems like a good idea, but I'd be a little wary about doing this all without Bonnaroo's blessing.
I don't think Bonnaroo is going to just let you move right in and start selling tents without going through the proper channels of being an endorsed vendor first. If anybody ever makes money Bonnaroo, they most certainly are going to want some sort of agreement sorting out liability, percentage of sales that you will pay as rent, as well as insurance requirements of your company as well as your supplier.
Your business model seems in line with what Trophy Lockers did (www.bonnaroolockers.com). Once your model and all the small details are finalized, I would focus on getting approved as an official partner. You're gonna be asking for a world of hurt if you don't.
BFE stands for "Bum Fornicate Egypt"...this is horribly inexact, but if you imagine the map of Bonnaroo as a capital Q, then imagine the tail on that Q extending about a half-mile and extruding this big pseudopod at the end of it. And that's pseudopod is BFE. It's a big campground way on out there away from the main body of the festival, and it's where early arrivers tend to get put.

We have gotten positive feedback and confirmation from most of the festivals we plan to attend in 2013. Athough bonnaroo's vendor app for 2013 is not yet live, we certainly plan on working through the proper channels and operating as a full vendor. We are doing this to provide recurring donations to refugee camps, seems like a win-win for all involved partiesl.
I do appreciate the concern though, thanks for lookin out.

Hey guys,
After years of going to festivals, and dealing with packing and traveling with bulky gear, or having to stop at wal-mart on my way to the event, I have been developing a concept that may make the experience easier and more accessible of all of us. It is called Project Shelter.
This service, www.projectshelter.org , will allow music festival attendees to preorder festy supplies online available for onsite pickup at events. At the end of the festival, customers have the option to leave behind any gear with us, and we will donate it to refugees and victims of disasters. So it's a way to get camping and other gear easily while at the same time providing an opportunity to make a direct positive impact on homeless and displaced ppl's lives.
I am posting to sort of test the waters and to see what kind of feedback you guys may have. I am interested in what you guys have to say, and I really value your opinions as the heart and soul of this community.
Feel free to contact us at info@projectshelter.org also with any ideas, questions, concerns, or to just set up a time to chat.

The last few years they have had a onsite place to sell camping equipment at Bonnaroo, they also have a company that reclaims lost/forgotten stuff at the end fyi.
