i was reading an q&a with bjork, and she was asked if she like metal. in her reply, she stated that from '85-'87 she was a "Swans obsessive." sunday swans bjork collab, you can always dream....
Thing is, a whole hell of a lot more people have been wanting Bjork in recent years, so her being booked was more of a matter of when, not if. I don't think many people (myself included) realistically expected Swans to get booked. To me, that really means something... how Swans have gotten so popular recently with a new audience is beyond me, but I'm really quacking happy it happened.
it's like if bonnaroo booked kraftwerk to play a tent at 5:00 on sunday. ridiculous.
I've seen them twice, definitely among my favorite artists, but I can't say I'm super enthused to see them at 'roo (or at Pitchfork for that matter, for the same reason) which is because they'll be playing mid-day in the heat and doing a drastically shortened set compared to what they usually do. They really work best in a dark environment and when they can play a full set, because part of their effect is that they sustain this massive cacophony for like 2 1/2 hours. After a while you just start to get in to a trance. With only an hour and in the hot sun (at roughly the warmest time of the day) I think the effect will really be lost. Oh well. Still an incredible band and an absolute powerhouse in concert. Gira hangs around afterwards too; I've met him twice.
The sound bleed from Swans is gonna be so bad for the folks wanting to see Sam Bush and Del McCoury.
I wasn't even thinking about that, Swans is going to interfere with everything going on at that time on Which, That, Troo, Sonic, Solar. haha. the loudest tent shows I heard from other last last year were SBTRKT, Puscifer and Danzig. Swans will definitely be louder than all of those.
I came away the opposite. There were incredible moments in there but also a lot of stuff that did nothing for me. I feel as if I'd rather catch them at a small dark club sometime in the future. I'm now thinking I'll do Holy Ghost and Ed Sharpe instead. But The Seer is still on heavy rotation for me so this is a hard one to call. I may change my mind yet again.

The first half of the set did so much for me. Strangely the best tent sound of the weekend. Got real close and tool some awesome pictures. Wish I could have caught it all, but I ran over to the Tame Impala, which itself was a spiritual experience. Two of the best shows back to back made for a great evening.
(1) Damon Albarn (2) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (3) King Khan & His Shrines (4) Ty Segall (5) Ms Lauryn Hill (6) Darkside (7) Kanye (8) Janelle Monae (9) Goat (10) Meshuggah.
I walked over to this after Tame Impala right when it got real dark and super windy. Pretty cool experience with Swans as the soundtrack. Really really loud. It was funny because David Byrne was watching on the left side and got out of there because it was too loud.

I am so conflicted about my decision to leave. Tame Impala was amazing, but Gira shouting at everyone to stop texting sounds amazing. I will see them the next time they hit town, regardless of the price.

I did the same as James Baxter. My friend and I already had rail for Baroness, and he left after that, but I wanted to check out part of Swans before heading out. I was exactly front and center of the rail though, and holy shit, it was awesome but Michael Gira looking right at me and screaming and just being Michael Gira was definitely a frightening experience, to say the least. Very very good though. So glad that Bonnaroo is a place where I could see so many once in a lifetime shows (Macca, Soul Superjam, Swans) within the space of four short days.
Yeah, this was second loudest show I've been to behind Skinny Puppy 2004 tour. Even with the etymotics in, this mess rattled my brain pretty good. There was a young kid standing next to me that had his fingers in his ears. After a few seconds, I realized that I had a pair of foam ear plugs in my bag that I used for sleeping the night before and I gave them to him. The smile on his face afterwards was priceless. Anybody else buy the Swans poster? That and the baroness tour shirt was teh only merch that I bought at the fest.

Did not see the Swans poster, but I bought the Baroness shirt and the Foals shirt.
And if I didn't have my etymotics, I would have had to watch Swans from the fountain. It was one of the loudest shows I've been to. I think Ministry at the HOB or Slayer in Gwinnett was louder though.
It wasn't an official poster, but there was a guy that makes posters selling them at one vendor. He had several from all over the place, but only made 2 or 3 for Roo this year. I'll post a pic later. It was f'n $30, but I couldn't not get it.
I was planning only catching the first couple songs and then heading to Tame Impala, but it was so great that I stayed until the end. Some of the set even had a bit of a "bounce" to it, where you could groove a bit. Best show of the weekend.

I stayed for "To Be Kind" and "Just a Little Boy", but I too had to run off to Tame Impala. I absolutely loved what I saw of them and had fun imagining the looks of confusion and fear across the farm.
We left the show as they started their 3rd number, and that massive thunderstorm reared its ugly head. That was one of the highlights of the fest for me; it was as if the mouth of hell was opening.

I did the same thing but the 45 minutes of Swans I caught was goddamn incredible. An experience for sure. The emptiness of the tent was hilarious and perfect to me. We were standing/sitting near the back and when the skies went dark and the wind picked up it was really cool. Fit the mood of the music perfectly. At one point my friend turned to me and said "this music turns people into zombies."
