"Sure, the Grammys, the Oscars and the Razzies loom just over the horizon, and the presidential election is only four months behind us, but let’s talk about the competition that local rockers really give a shiz about: Mercy Lounge and BMI’s fifth annual Road to Bonnaroo 8 off 8th series. By now most of y’all know the drill: Twenty-four bands, performing at three monthly 8 off 8ths, one winner from each bill (as voted on by fans and judges) gets a coveted slot (and a bounty of artist passes) at Bonnaroo.
Jealousy, controversy, competition, cut throats and close calls, the battle of the bands begins Monday, Feb. 25, in the battleground state of Mercy Lounge. Facing off in Round One are: Alanna Royale, DeRobert and the Half-Truths, Dylan McDonald, Five Knives, Grass Root Kids, Schools, Sol Cat and The Young International — from singer-songwriter poise to amelodic, electro-zeitgeisty cacophony, the bill is a stylistically diverse, aesthetically assorted medley of on-the-rise Music City talent to be sure. I’d say sports-book odds favor Five Knives. If you wanna insure such a victory (or rather, prevent it) show up early, make like a musically patient Floridian and have your voice heard."
