The album really surpassed my expectations. In fact I was pretty blown away by the production / mastering / mixing, I thought it was a cut above pretty much all of their other studio output. Everyone comes through really cleanly in the mix, Mike's low end is great, and Page's textures are all over the album. Fishman is solid as ever, and Trey's vocals sounded really raw and natural.
Everything's Right is just a sublime studio cut, I don't think they could've done it any better. They really encapsulated the 'live' sound, which is so tough to do. Really loved the proggy moments in Thread. Honestly, there aren't many low points. It also helped being familiar with the majority of songs from live shows, which definitely made it easier to digest.
Some of the arrangements were awesome, and I really hope I still get to see Trey perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
agree with all of this, particularly good point about trey's vocals.
the only point when i thought i wasn't enjoying it was "a life beyond the dream" but then it peaked so beautifully.
the reaction from the phish fanbase is almost uniformly positive, which as we all know is very unusual for phish fans.
Sigma Oasis came to be during the first week of November 2019, but it wasn’t planned that way at all. We were headed up to The Barn to rehearse for our fall tour and ended up discussing this batch of relatively recent songs that we were particularly proud of and always wished we had recorded, but hadn’t had a chance to yet. Trey suggested calling up Vance Powell as he mixed and engineered Ghosts Of The Forest. Vance was very familiar with the space and the console so we set up the gear with no room dividers, no click tracks. Nothing. Just like a Phish show. Open space. We played for a couple days. We just played a bunch of songs — very quickly, a few takes, very organic, natural, live, honest. We had the best time.
When we were done, our photographer Rene came up and asked us to come out on the porch and snap a photo. It took about two minutes. And that’s the album cover — a snapshot of our band at that point in time.
Vance had some stuff on his schedule so he asked as a favor if we would mind if he didn’t mix until early March. Now four months might sound like a long time, but it gave all of us time to work on the tracks — Page overdubbed a lot of keyboards at home. Trey went to a studio in New York and did vocals and percussion. We had time to pick which songs we wanted to work on. We let a few of them go, which was difficult, but that’s ok.
When we recorded the album, we didn’t plan to release it this way. But today, because of the environment we’re all in, it just feels right. We don’t know the next time that we’re all going to be able to be together. This is an opportunity to have a moment where the Phish community can share something despite being physically separated.
The last line of the chorus of “Sigma Oasis” sums up this point — There’s no place to get. There’s nothing to achieve. There’s no place to be. We’re here. Right here, right now is as good as it gets. “You’re already there.” It’s a content state of mind. You’re just completely in the moment. “You’re already there.” You already have everything you need. Sigma Oasis. It aligns with where we are in our career and as friends and musicians. There’s a joy to the playing. We’re not clamoring to make it. Make what? We’re already there! Sigma Oasis.
That's so nice. Imagine getting that message from your favorite guitarist, or anyone you admire really.
I'm so, so glad Phish is happy and healthy and excited to be making music. We're really luck to get this kind of stuff and surprise new music and live shows from them on a regular basis.
Something interesting happens halfway through “Everything’s Right,” a 12-minute track on Sigma Oasis. For a while, it’s everything you might expect from a Phish record nearly 40 years into their career: an intentionally mind-numbing chorus (“Everything’s right/So just hold tight”) set to a melody that cycles between sunny major chords like a beach ball infinitely bobbing through a crowd of outstretched arms. It’s light and goofy—sorta funky. But then it shifts. Around the five-minute mark, after Trey Anastasio finishes a polite vamp on the word “alright,” he kicks off a guitar solo. Page McConnell follows on the organ. Soon, the whole band is in on it, listening intently to one another and changing shape, one note at a time. Suddenly, Phish is jamming, and you’re right there with them.
On a studio record by this band, it sounds like a total breakthrough. For longer than most groups have been around, the accepted wisdom was that Phish were unable to capture their spontaneous energy off the stage. Combined with their unremarkable songwriting, this failure has resulted in a discography that feels secondary to their actual legacy, best understood through decades of bootlegs, and even better by attending one of their inventive, Odyssean live shows. Maybe their last album, 2016’s obnoxious Big Boat, was rock bottom, the moment they knew something had to change. Maybe veteran producer Bob Ezrin, who departed after helming their past few releases, was to blame. Maybe Anastasio’s solo detour with Ghosts of the Forest was an actual creative reckoning as depicted in 2019’s fawning documentary, Between Me and My Mind. Whatever the case, Sigma Oasis is a pleasant surprise, a small joy, an unlikely course correction.
even before digging into the original PT post that noted unreliable OP, scheduling conflicts with other events at venues, etc., i felt they were fake because there is a New Orleans date. but new orleans indoor > oak mtn > indoor ATL show x2 would be amazing.
edit: someone through around the idea of phish attempting to book an identical tour summer 2021, i think that would be the best move.

Are You There Colleen?
Lots of songs coming out. I hope they provide a bit of joy, or even distraction. The truth is, writing helps me. It feels like connective tissue with our community of friends.
Or maybe this is just another addiction? Who knows? It sure as Hell beats “that other addiction”. Which makes me want to say this: For those out there suffering with addiction, You CAN get off drugs. Keep the faith. life is joyous on the other side. This event could be your salvation if it lights a fire that leads to a life off drugs. Drugs and alcohol never even cross my mind today. There was a time when I couldn’t go 5 mins without thinking about that stuff. If you’re reading this and you understand, then you understand. If you don’t, I could never explain it to you in a million years. I hope you never have to know. But to those who are spending every second of this pandemic scrambling in sheer terror to get what they need, there’s a way out.
Winston Churchill famously said, “If you’re going thru Hell, keep going”. Help is there. Ask. Remember, you are a sick person trying to get well, NOT a bad person trying to get good. Part of the sickness is not knowing that you’re sick. Isolation is the main component of addiction and alcoholism. Zoom meetings are a good place to connect with a community. Hearing others talk can help. You’re not alone. 70,000 people a year die of overdoses in America. How many are sick, but didn’t overdose? A lot. How many are out searching, ignoring isolation rules right this second? A lot. How much money does addiction cost a week? A lot.
Even though your conscious mind is saying, “FUCK this asshole, what do you know about me?” I believe that deep down you’d rather be free of this massive anchor that’s been weighing you down for so long. I know how hard it is. When I had 9 days clean, I told an older sober guy “I haven’t slept in 9 days. I’m losing my mind.” He said, “Luckily no one has ever died of lack of sleep, try writing in your journal.” That was 13 years ago. I sleep now. You’ll struggle. There’s no magic pill. You have to go thru it, not around. But you CAN get off drugs. Forever.

i was at the last three shows of the Baker's Dozen and am very grateful for that experience. great shows, wonderful to be a part of, etc.
but of all the moments of the BD, my favorite is in 7/25/2017 (jam filled). not Lawn Boy, not any of the long jams, but the moment in the "Sample" opener at about 3 minutes when Trey plays those handful of notes deviating from going back into the final chorus, and the crowd goes absolutely insane. this moment demonstrates the power of the band's obsessive fan base. jam filled was announced and everyone knew what was coming. phish fans generally know all the ins and outs of all phish songs and what typically goes into them being performed live. the band comes out and opens with Sample to kind of a lukewarm reaction from the crowd. but then just a few minutes in, Trey releases just a handful of slightly different notes to what was expected and understanding just rolls over the minds of the fans in Madison Square Garden and they all start screaming like animals.
gals and guys i can't wait to see phish live again, but until then we have the music to keep us company.

while everybody has different songs they are chasing, I posit that the most desirable Phish song for any fan to hear live is "Harpua". Agree or disagree?

buddy sent me a rumor that dicks is getting pushed to 9/3-9/5/2021, announcement thursday. if true i'd assume the rest of the tour postponements/cancellations are announced then as well.

FB told me that ten years ago i went to the theater to see Phish 3D. Anybody go to that?
our crowd was sparse but enthusiastic. about halfway through the first song the theater cranked the volume and we all cheered. it was fun.
I went to one of those during 2.0. There were three theaters showing it and there were people slinging grilled cheese in the parking lot and shit. It was great. Someone lit up a bowl in one of the other theaters and they all got kicked out.

yeah i went to one of those two, i think it was Jones Beach? live simulcast. similar scene to yours. glowstick spinners in the aisles, the whole deal.
phish 3D wasn't a simulcast though, just a 3D movie they made up of clips from Festival 8. it was neat.

The tour is definitely getting cancelled
yeah it's just a matter of when.
i'd like to see the whole tour "postponed" to next summer instead of cancelled, with option to refund or rollforward tickets. i was really excited about oak mtn > piedmont.

I recognize it because I heard it on Phish Radio the other day
Due to the ongoing pandemic, we sadly have made the difficult decision to reschedule Phish’s entire 2020 summer tour, now moving to the summer of 2021. We’ve been as excited as ever to play music for you all, and are so heartbroken to postpone these dates. The health and well-being of Phish fans, our touring crew, and the communities in which the band plays is our top concern.
The rescheduled dates are below. The new dates for the Atlanta shows will be announced very soon.
A few nuts and bolts: All tickets and travel packages will be automatically honored for the rescheduled dates. However, full refunds are available at the point of purchase as well. Please note: If you purchased from an authorized ticket sales channel (Ticketmaster, Phish Tickets, CID or venue websites) you will have until May 31st to request a refund. These ticketing partners will be contacting all buyers shortly with further instructions. When new dates are announced for Atlanta, the deadline for ticket refunds for those shows will be extended.
Thank you for your understanding. We’re all in this together. Stay healthy and safe and we can’t wait to see you real soon.

Interesting note about Piedmont Park. Maybe the park wanted to add a regular benefit concert and they've already got 2021 booked? I dunno. Anyway, I'm glad they give you the option to get a refund or keep the ticket.

First thing I did was look for those Piedmont dates. Be interesting to see where they end up.
Anyway this is exactly what I wanted them to do. Best way they could've handled it. Props to the Phish org for rescheduling an entire tour and maintaining all the shows.

It's a pretty amazing accomplishment! Based on my interpretation of how Ticketmaster is dealing with charge backs right now, I really, really appreciate the gang using their power to make refunds a standard operating procedure.
From a personal standpoint, I'm going to release my tickets back into the wild because I need the money and I don't know what my 2021 is going to look like past June. But ... maybe I can roll the dice and make my way to The Gorge AND Piedmont Park.

You're not allowed to move until 2021 tho, bc inforoo Phish party at Piedmont is also postponed til whenever that happens

BELIEVE ME it has crossed my mind. I'm truly, genuinely heartbroken to not get to host all my Inforoo and IRL friends on my porch, two blocks from a Phish show.
The good news is one of my best friends lives four blocks away so party at his place.

What's his name on the boards?
The best part about this burn is that we actually met on the Perpetual Groove message boards in, like, 2005 haha.

The Gorge would be a pretty incredible first show back. Been meaning to visit my buddy in Seattle.

I've got a six-man tent and a portable grill. You bring the sunscreen, we'll make this happen.
