Walk the Moon HAIM (just an EP now I think with LP coming this year)
I see two releases for each of these bands - Walk the moon = "Walk the Moon" and "I want! I want!" HAIM = "Forever" and "Daytrotter Session"
I'm assuming you're referring to the more recent ones but I want to be sure
For Walk the Moon - I Want I Want was a self released that is hard to get and is really the same songs so there's really one one album's worth of songs - Walk The Moon.
For HAIM - I just meant they only have EPs, no LP. Forever is the best place to start with them but it's only 4 or 5 songs. Their LP is supposed to be out this year, but haven't seen a date recently.

I recommend the new debut album from Trixie Whitley. She performed a few songs from that album live on the radio here a while ago and it sounds amazing.
Since we are picking starter albums, I will post those first. These are the albums that either give the best representation of the artist overall, or will be the most universally understood/appreciated. This doesn't mean I'm posting the most pop friendly albums, just the ones that are representative and easier to get into. I will put my favorite album in parentheses.
Wilco - The Whole Love (four-way tie between Whole Love, YHF, Sky Blue Sky, and A Ghost is Born) Grizzly Bear - Shields (Veckatimest) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (Merriweather Post Pavilion) Tame Impala - Lonerism (InnerSpeaker) Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city (good kid, m.A.A.d city)

What's the deal with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis? I had never even heard of them until the Sasquatch line-up was announced. I listened to that Thrift Shop track and didnt much are for it. What are they billed so high? Anyone a fan and can explain? I am curious as to what I am missing.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

Mumford - they are both out there Wilco - WTF is out there Pretty Lights - only his remix album is which is weird considering his music is free Wu Tang - I think most, if not all are on there Lumineers - there single album is out there Kendrick Lamar - he has three albums out there Grizzly Bear - Yellow House is out there Animal Collective - looks like all their albums are out there minus the new one Nas - all of his albums are out there ZZ Top - looks like most of them are there Beach House - both Bloom and Teen Dream are on there Macklemore - The Heist and Language of my Own World Cat Power- Myra Lee is out there Edward Sharpe - Up From Below is out there in parts ASAP Rocky - LiveLoveASAP is there Jim James va MMJ - Circuital is out there.
That's artist through the first 8 lines. If they arent listed, there are no albums on Youtube for them right now. I can do more later if people want. Youtube is the best way to preview unfamiliar artist in my opinion.

Is High Violet that great? I like the National but I never really got much into that one, and personally I'd recommend Alligator over HV and Boxer over both.
Also, it's sort of useless taking a band that has two or three albums and saying you should start with all of them. Or taking someone like Paul McCartney and say 'Listen to his Beatles stuff, solo work and Wings material'. That kind of response just really doesn't do anything for someone looking for an album to start with, though his Beatles stuff is probably so ubiquitous that it might be difficult to find a Roo-goer who wasn't at least somewhat familiar with it.
To be honest, though, some of the older artists with long careers & discographies and numerous pop hits might be better served with a greater hits collection. This applies more to some artists/genres than others - I'm thinking R. Kelly in particular right now, who has a great catalog that features a lot of albums that are mostly filler, with enough hits and great songs to make for a full and awesome set. But this also applies to other artists such as Billy Idol and ZZ Top.
Oh, and to narrow some of these down: Japandroids - Celebration Rock Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan Nas - Illmatic Animal Collective - I'd say listen to Centipede Hz because that's what they're touring but there's a good chance they'll just dick around on stage for an hour or so Jim James - Sound and Light Beach House - Bloom The xx - self-titled
These almost all lean towards current albums; some of these bands might have arguably better 'starter' albums out there, but these albums are all great picks also and I think it's best to familiarize yourself with the set they'll be playing. Exception for XX based on personal opinion.

Not sure what John McLaughlin plays these days, but Mahavishnu's Orchestra "The Inner Mounting Flame" is the hotness.
Don't think I can add anything else that hasn't already been mentioned, but thanks to whoever recommended Four Tet's "Rounds". I was feeling kind of sick towards the end of the work day, and this was the perfect music to set my equilibrium straight. Sounds glorious in a quiet environment while sitting still.
That is intended as a compliment, I just realized it could sounds smarmy.

Tom Petty has a four disc live anthology set that is phenomenal. Also Mojo, the band's latest album, is easily up there with my favorite (and best) Petty albums. ZZtop, I'd have to go with Tres Hombres. Tame Impala, Innerspeaker, but I feel like Lonerism might be easier to get into. Gov't Mule, I like Mulenium, but they have a very different band set up now. Portugal. The Man, The Satanic Satanist. Ariel Pink, Mature Themes The Sheepdogs, Learn and Burn. I haven't listened to much of The Sheepdogs(album), but what I've heard, I've liked. Tormbone Shorty, Backatown.
