Hi all!
Never been to Bonnaroo before and thinking about going this year.
Question: is it worth going if I think the lineup sucks?
I've been to smaller music festivals in the past and generally have had a great time, but they've always been shows with bands that I really like. With Bonnaroo 2013, that wouldn't be the case - the only headliner that I have any interest in seeing is Mumford, and even with them I'm not really all that big of a fan.
For people who have gone in years past, how important was the actual music to your overall experience? Do you think you would have had a great time even if you had very little interest in any of the main bands that were playing?

My first suggestion would be to listen to everything on the line-up. I always end up seeing multiple people that I had no knowledge of before the line-up.
FWIW, I am not super interested in any of the top three.

do you like/know more than Mumford? if yes, keep digging into the acts performing. if no, start digging into the acts performing. if you find that nothing really does it for you then IMO you are paying a lot of money to camp and party. i always check into the acts listed and usually discover new faves.

Whenever I got to a festival, I go through the line-up and listen to a few songs from every act on Youtube. If I find acts I like which I also do, I usually listen to an album or two. I always end up finding at least a half dozen acts I had never heard before that I really end up liking.
I am not sure how you can think this line-up sucks.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

This is exactly what I do every year, and will be starting tonight!
In 2010 I discovered a few bands that actually became favourites of mine, but I didn't end up going that year 3 years later, I finally get to see Japandroids!

I think you could still have a great time and that you just aren't familiar with the line up very well. If you like that mumford crap, you should really like a lot of the other stuff. And yea, partying all night on the farm and the experience is really what it's all about for me. The music is just an added bonus.

I have attended many bluegrass festivals and I dont particularly like bluegrass music but I had an amazing time at all of them simply because of the people and atmosphere and ended up hearing some bluegrass I like even though most if it I cannot really stand.

If you don't like the music, you may want to go for these 'roo attractions:
- Southern Tennessee heat and humidity - Dust, lots and lots of it if its dry - Walking potentially great distances - Really hot and sweaty porta pots, including some that can make the bathroom scene in Trainspotting look good - Standing in long lines to get into Centeroo
In all seriousness, there is a lot more to 'roo than the headliners. I've pretty much slept through a few to get rested up for the late nights, which are overflowing with great live music. Don't base your decision on only having an interest in one of the three.
I just gotta flat out ask why you would go to a music fest if you don't like any of the music?
The idea of a 4 day party on a farm in Tennessee with thousands of people looking to have a good time seemed like it would be a great experience.
It is. I've been 6 times previous and even though the headliners might not be your cup of tea, with so many bands playing you're bound to find at least two or three per day that you'd enjoy. Plus it's a huge, fun party. If you go to have fun, you will have fun.

There are other festivals that are more, accommodative for someone who isn't into the music. I think that going to 'roo, battling the heat, ect would be miserable if I wasn't into any of the music. Check out Hangout, Wanee, or Electric Forest. If you don't care about the bands, pick the sweetest location. Although yes, the fact that nothing on this lineup interests you baffles me as well- but different strokes!
and to answer your question of how important is the music to the overall experience: it is the entire experience, for me at least. Sure, people are grand and bullshitting is swell but the music is the reason for going...

You will have a good time regardless of the lineup, but with all the festivals out there these days, surely you can find a lineup that better suits your tastes.
If you have a group of friends going, thats one thing, but if you are considering riding solo and you don't care for the lineup, I would suggest finding something else.
What kind of music are you looking for? If you say Ultra Music Festival or something like that than you can tent with Phi and he can show you his secret to surviving four full days without a laptop for visual aid.

I would really recommend never going in @ntellier85's tent.

I decided to go to Firefly this year. I'm a big fan of the Chili Peppers, though I haven't heard them live since they replaced Frusciante (again).
Not really anything against the type of music in general at this year's Bonnaroo; just not a particular fan of any of the headliners.

And that's not necessarily a bad thing, I was just curious if you were a big EDM person who might not know some of the lesser-known EDM acts (my friend is like this, but she's been listening to Four Tet for the past 24 hours).
If the lineup isn't for you, go to a fest whose lineup is. Roo will eventually hit a home run for you personally (unless you don't like any good music, which isn't Roo's fault) and you'll get your chance for the 4-day party. You seem to have the right attitude about it, instead of flipping out about how Bonnaroo screwed you over with their lineup you just shrug and find something more up your alley. Kudos for that, most noobs aren't that level-headed.
