My favorite time that I saw Chan was when she had a "breakdown" (I use this term loosely for her in 2005). She came out, told everyone to shut-up and sat behind the piano. 3 songs in she started screaming about the PA and just laid her head down on the piano. This went on for well over an hour until she started screaming about the KKK and ran out the back door.
It was kinda sad looking back on it now but that night, holy shiz, we couldn't believe what we just saw.
EDIT: I've seen her since then and she was fantastic, imo.

Mumford & Sons: Saw them do three songs at the Policeman's Charity Ball in NYC; they played a slowed-down version of "Little Lion Man" and it was kind of wack. This summer, however, I saw them play in NJ and was in the front row; it was an amazing show with crazy energy. Definitely one of my favorite shows.
Passion Pit: Saw them a few months ago in Philly. The show was good but didn't really blow me away.
Kendrick Lamar: Roo last year. I was actually really disappointed with his set - the version of Rigamortus that he did was abbreviated and he spent way too much time yelling about pu$$Y and Patron. He came across as just another mainstream rapper which kinda tarnished my image of him. I'm still going to be at his set this year though; he's too talented to pass up.
Japandroids: Amazing show with a lot of energy in a medium sized Orlando venue. Will definitely consider seeing them again, hoping for no conflict.
Killer Mike: I missed half of his set while he was playing with El-P. The concert wasn't great but I attribute that to terrible booking (7 PM Wednesday rap concert?). The place was barely filled (maybe 50 people showed up). I LOVE his last album so I would definitely give it another shot, especially since I predict it would have at least 10x the amount of people going. It could really end up being great so I can't have my previous experience be a tell-tale sign of how this one will go.

Mumford and Sons: I saw them for about 20 minutes or so at Roo 11. Definitely a fun show, it made me wish I saw the whole thing. Now that I've become a bigger fan, I'm looking forward to their set very much.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Maybe it's because I was in the nosebleeds, but this show didn't do it for me. Some parts of it dragged, and from that far away, I couldn't really "feel" the band. And they didn't play Breakdown. I'm hoping this show was a fluke and that I enjoy them more this time (considering there's more positive reviews of his show out there than negative ones).
Pretty Lights: Was pretty fun the first time I saw him, but nothing too ridiculous. Second time around (at Counterpoint) I had a much better feel for what he was all about, and I really enjoyed it (even though I only got to see the second half). I'm thinking his LN Which show will be the best one yet.
Passion Pit: It was a fun show, but nothing to write home about. I don't know what I was expecting. They could afford to make their sound a little tighter, but I would still see them again if there's no conflicts (probably will end up missing them though).
The xx: Absolutely stunning show. Everything about it was near-flawless, and this is coming from someone who went into the show as a casual fan. Unless there's a nasty conflict, I won't be missing them.
Kendrick Lamar: Saw about 20 minutes at Roo last year. Didn't really stand out to me, and I will say I enjoyed Danny Brown's set more. If he's come into his own more now, I'm sure it'll be good, but I won't be bummed if I miss him.
Of Monsters and Men: I saw them at a local alternative festival last December, and they were easily one of the best bands there (probably second-best behind Flogging Molly). Great performers and genuinely nice people. This will be a highlight on the farm.
ZZ Top: Their show was fun enough, although I did watch at Universal Studios (which can hinder the show in some cases). I remember thinking after the show "These guys could totally be at Roo" and I was right. I could see it being more fun there. I'll try to catch at least a bit.
The Gaslight Anthem: Solid show at Deluna Fest, and they brought out Eddie Vedder, which was amazing. About 45 minutes in, their songs were starting to run together a bit, so I left to catch some Band of Skulls. Will probably end up missing these guys, but you never know.
Portugal. The Man: Was enjoyable at Roo 11, but I didn't stay long enough to get a full idea of their show. I wish I had known more of their stuff. Now I do, and I'm highly looking forward to this year's show.
Matt and Kim: Seemed like a fun show. Definitely very energetic. I saw them open for Blink-182 and My Chem so the environment was a bit different. I will probably catch them at Ultra to get a better idea for Roo.
Frank Turner: Saw him open for Dropkick Murphys at a sold-out show last year. None of my friends had heard of him (neither had I), and we were all fans afterwards. Definitely a good live act. I'll probably end up missing him again though.
Bands I'm seeing before Roo 13 that will be there: Pretty Lights (again) Wolfgang Gartner (maybe) Boys Noize Porter Robinson Matt and Kim (again)

- Petty: Saw him at 'roo, and I thought he put on a solid classic rock set. The Heartbreakers are a top-notch band. - Wilco: Seen them a few times, and a lot of times I go just to watch Nels Cline. Fantastic guitarist. - The National: Their last show at 'roo, on the Which stage, was amazing in my opinion. Full of passion. - Mumford: Again, saw at 'roo on the Which stage. I enjoyed the show, particularly the ending, an amped up rendition of Amazing Grace with Jerry Douglas and some others. - Animal Collective: Seeing them in three weeks to the day in Detroit, but also saw that blistering mid-day 'roo show. I don't count it. I was hugging a tree for shade. It was too hot to move. - Lumineers: Saw them at All Good last year and CD12.5 Summerfest in Columbus. If you like what you've heard on the radio, you'll likely enjoy their show. They get the crowd to sing along to their big hit. - Passion Pit: I like to hop around and dance, so I enjoyed the one time I saw them. Sleephead is one of my favorite dance party tracks. - Cat Power: Saw her at Langerado. Heck of a voice! When I saw her, she was really into it. I've heard the opposite sometimes holds true. - Edward Sharpe: Another 'roo show I've seen. Again, it was blistering hot, but the band was really passionate, which I appreciated. I though the album translated really well to the live setting. - Gov't Mule: Seen them a ton, like maybe 8-10 times. Warren Haynes. Guitar. 'nuff said. - Boys Noize: Killer live show. - Matt and Kim: I got Kim's autograph and a hug after the show I saw. I thought it was a great show. A lot of energy from both of them. The crowd ate it up. - Sam Bush and Del: Seen em both separately. Legends. - Father John Misty: If you like his album, don't let anything let you miss this show. He's honestly better a live. A must for me at 'roo. - Paper Diamond: I like him. Saw him open for someone, and I honestly can't remember who. I do remember PD. Good stuff. - Portugal the man: Was walking by their show at 'roo with my wife, and we got transfixed. Very impressive live. Have been a fan ever since. - Pretty Lights: Seen him like a dozen times. Never felt let down, but I've had a few experiences being annoyed by spun out kids who couldn't handle their shiz.
- Petty: Saw him at 'roo, and I thought he put on a solid classic rock set. The Heartbreakers are a top-notch band, even without their old keyboardist, who passed away.
Benmont Tench, the keyboard player for TP&HBs is alive and well and still playing with the band. The only band member that is dead is longtime bassist Howie Epstein who died of an overdose not long after being kicked out of the band. He was replaced by original bass player Ron Blair.

I honestly don't know what I was thinking. Kinda hard to mix up one of the greatest keyboardists around and a bass player. ... And now I've corrected that misstatement.

I just saw Tame Impala last night. Lordy lord that was hell of a show. The setlist says only two jams in their set, but they easy extended 5 or 6 of their songs with psychedelic jams. They had a retro looking screen with swirling lines and such following the rhythm behind them. At one point, the lead singer, Kevin Parker, said, "Sorry if my voice sounds like a seal in space..or an otter maybe." At 1st, I thought he was just high as can be saying nutty stuff to the audience. Then someone told me he was referring to being sick with pneumonia. I can't believe his voice sounded so good for someone recovering from pneumonia! Their sound is tight as can be. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW

Tom Petty, this will be the fourth time I've seen him live. He had two out of three good shows, the bad one I think was the people I was with more then anything, bad vibes that show. He isn't some show stopper, but you'll know every song, the crowd generally gets into it, and the "fog" makes everything better.
ZZ top, another good show you'll know all the songs at.
Gas light, awesome show last year.
Matt and Kim, OK show, wouldn't say I enjoyed that show so much, but its worth a second shot.
A few other bands I've seen on the list, but I was to inebriated to givea proper review.

First off, I wanna say that I love that I haven't seen anybody in the top 9. That makes it a pretty special lineup for me personally. As far as who I have seen:
The National: Truly special live band, very theatrical. Seen them three times: A at Bonnaroo 2010, A at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh in 2008, A+ at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh in late 2010 (they shut out the lights in the place for "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks," it was amazing).
Passion Pit: Very underrated live but very hit or miss...completely surprised me at Moogfest 2011, one of the three best shows I saw that year (A) and just decent when I saw them at Disco Rodeo here in Raleigh (B).
The xx: Saw them before they blew up in a 700-capacity venue and at Bonnaroo 2010. A- at the Cat's Cradle, B- at Bonnaroo...I think they're better indoors
Nas: Solid at Moogfest last year...didn't catch the whole thing but I'd give it a B-
Animal Collective: Saw the same show problem dog did (Pitchfork Fest headlining set) and I would also give it a D. Kinda sucked.
Beach House: Always solid...B+
Jim James: Obviously MMJ puts on A+ performances, will see Jim solo in May at the Orange Peel
Tame Impala: Just saw them a few days ago, really solid, very heavy psychedelic jamming...give it a solid B
The Gaslight Anthem: Seen 'em twice...right after The '59 Sound came out and then last year. First show was a B+, the more recent one was a C-, the lead singer sounds awful live now and they've gotten more generic bar band-y sounding
Local Natives: One of the first shows I saw at Bonnaroo 2010, fell in love (wasn't a massive fan going in)...A-
Matt & Kim: Saw 'em at Virgin Free Festival b/c they were before a band I wanted to see (I think)...awful, one of the worst shows I've ever seen...F-
Dirty Projectors: Only saw them open for TV on the Radio in 2010, it was decent enough...B-
The Tallest Man on Earth: exactly what you'd expect given the records, plays solo, very talented...B
Pres Hall Jazz Band: seen 'em open for MMJ a few times, always solid and enjoyable...B
Divine Fits: I don't know if it was the venue, and I'd totally be willing to give them another chance but they were incredibly boring at Moogfest...C
Swans: Super, super, super intense and loud. Very moving experience...A-
Big K.R.I.T.: One of the best hip-hop shows I've ever seen, so much energy, do not plan on missing him at Bonnaroo...A
Cults: Not bad but kind of annoying...C+
Four Tet: Behind LCD Soundsystem, one of the very best electronic shows I've ever seen...A/A+
Japandroids: A lot of fun, a lot of energy, but more suited to an indoor venue...B- at Bonnaroo 2010, B+ at an indoor venue later that year
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti: Seen them twice, motherf*cker is absolutely insane. Stormed off the stage at Pitchfork 2011 before playing "Round and Round," people were saying it was staged...when they do play, it's solid but nothing to write home about...B
Milo Greene: B-
Futurebirds: Surprisingly good on Thursday at Bonnaroo 2011, really really loved "Wild Heart." B+
Matthew E. White: seen him once with a full, 30+ piece orchestra (that show was a definite A) and once with his regular six-piece touring band (it was still really solid but they kind of sped up the songs) and I'd give that a B+
That Lincoln Theatre show was so good. I think that was the moment they became my favorite band. I'm surprised you liked the memorial show better.
The xx: Saw them before they blew up in a 700-capacity venue and at Bonnaroo 2010. A- at the Cat's Cradle, B- at Bonnaroo...I think they're better indoors
Paul McCartney Mumford Wilco The National St Vincent The xx Animal Collective ZZ Top Billy Idol Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes A$ap Rocky Jim James Tame Impala Wolfgang Gartner Gov't Mule Portugal. The Man Boys Noize Dwight Yoakam Foals The Vaccines Holy Ghost! Purity Ring Araabmuzik The Sheepdogs Death Grips Reptar JEFF The Brotherhood
Some were good. Some were not so good.

r I don't think I knew who The xx were when they played the 506, but I did see the Fleet Foxes there. And yeah, that National show at Lincoln was just unbelievable but I liked the Memorial one only slightly better. I think a large part of it is that High Violet is my favorite album and those songs hadn't yet come out for the Lincoln show. That Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks singalong definitely sent chills up my spine.

Wilco's stage set up last summer was really cool. There were lights in the paper bulbs that flashed on and off over the course of the show. Some friends of mine cribbed the setup to decorate their wedding.

Apply yourself, Matt and Kim.
Seriously, I'll stand by the B- I gave them, but I have very little desire to see them outdoors, particularly from 50+ yards back. Their enthusiasm is great, but the live show I caught really emphasizes how thin the music is.
I'm glad you're with me on that Animal Collective show, rosko. So awful.

Ya, the show at Mass MOCA(that set combined with lighting effects) led me to believe they are evolving into a more visually stimulating act. I only see it improving from here on out.

Wilco - Seeing them in 2004 was amazing but I loved the set they played at Bonnaroo. Something about being outside in the sun when they're playing all my favorite songs from YHF and California Stars, too. Gov't Mule -- I can't blame them for not wanting to morph into an Allman Bros cover band. But secretly i do. Grizzly Bear - Had a decent time but wasn't memorable. Animal Collective - I remember enjoying them more than Grizzly Bear. David Byrne - Had to miss another band I wanted to see to catch him. But I didn't regret it at all. Dirty Projectors - Meh.
That acoustic version of Vanderlyle was pretty amazing.
You should have heard them do it at the Mother Church. . That was also one of the few stops on the tour to get 90 Mile Water Wall. They said that one felt Ryman-appropriate.

Like I said I've only seen DPs open for TVOTR (it was right after Bitte Orca came out) and while it was decent, I wouldn't say it was anything special. Might've been in part because it was an opening gig, though.
