If this is your first time hearing of Glen, or if you've just never checked out his stuff before, do yourself a favor a have a listen. I've seen this guy ten times in concert, which I realize makes me sound a little sad, but he puts on the best damn live show that I've ever seen. He's so much more than the guy from Once that people think of him as. I've never seen anyone pour as much passion into a song as this man can, nor have I ever heard a voice with as much raw emotional intensity as Glen. If you want to have a fucking good time on the farm, seeing Glen should be a priority.
Essential albums: Rhythm and Repose - Glen Hansard Strict Joy - The Swell Season Once Soundtrack - Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova Set List - The Frames For The Birds - The Frames
Essential songs: Falling Slowly (The Swell Season) Low Rising (The Swell Season) When Your Mind's Made Up (The Swell Season) This Gift (Solo) Bird Of Sorrow (Solo) High Hope (Solo) Finally (The Frames) Revelate (The Frames) Seven Day Mile (The Frames) Fitzcarraldo (The Frames)
My gf and I have been wanting to see him ever since we saw the movie Once. Keep missing him anytime he played here, I will not miss his set at bonnaroo.
The set in 2008 was amazing. My wife and I unfortunately left it early to get over to The Raconteurs (also amazing). We will definitely stay for the whole thing this time. The documentary that came out about him and Marketa ("The Swell Season") is quite good too, if a little sad because you see them breaking up slowly while their on tour. There are some good performance clips on it.

I saw him in Denver with the Swell Season a few years ago. I don't think of them as a favorite band of mine, but I do remember that show as one of the best I've ever seen. His energy is absolutely captivating.
What is his solo show like? Is he completely alone or does he have a band/accompaniment?
This was a chill bump inducing moment at Bonnaroo 2008:
Fucking LOVE Heyday. I wish I could have been at that Bonnaroo, but I unfortunately didn't start going until two years later. I wouldn't be surprised if Glen plays it again this year though. Mic Christopher was his best friend, and he passed away before his album ever came out. Glen and others got together and helped get it finished. It's called Skylarkin', and it's absolutely brilliant. Whenever Glen does Heyday in concert, people go insane, and for good reason, that song is killer. Check out Mic's album. He was really influential to a lot of artists like Glen, Damien Rice, and Lisa Hannigan, all of whom grew up with him. Damien actually dedicated his first album "O" to Mic.

I've seen him both ways. He's played completely along, and is absolutely captivating, but sometimes he plays with a full backing band which takes the show to a whole new level. When I saw him on his most recent tour for the new album, which was a few months ago, he was billed as solo but his backing band was all of the guys from The Frames. He actually had a pretty big band with him. The show was crazy good. I would imagine that at Bonnaroo he'll have a backing band with him which will most likely be the members of The Frames, which means we'll surely get some Frames songs.

Good info - thanks! I'd never heard the song until this set, then downloaded Mic's version when I got back home. To me, it lacked the same energy, but I guess that's to be expected from the age-old live vs. studio comparison.
Going into this set, I only knew these two from the movie Once. Didn't even catch the first half, just walked over to check it out for a few minutes and got hooked.
This year will be Bonnaroo #8 for me, and Heyday was definitely in my top 4-5 Bonnaroo moments ever.

I saw him in Dallas with Swell Season and it was a fantastic show most of that owing to him. I would think he will kick ass at Bonnaroo.

Aww man! You beat me to it. I was on my way to make a Glen thread. I agree with everything typed. Glen Hansard will pour more emotion into his set than probably anyone else on the farm. I have no face thanks to this guy, as he has melted it off. I strongly believe that the 'Swell Season' is one of best collaborations to ever grace indie folk.
You have 2 amazing songs in Fitzcarraldo and Revelate on your essential song list but no Fitzcarraldo the album! I think that's where Glen's 'raw' emotionalism really broke through.
I would also add these as essential Glen: Leave - considered swell season, but it's Glen solo Lies - Swell Season Come Away to the Water - Glen Say it to me Now - The Frames version is awesome, but Glen tears this apart solo
Anyways, I plan on being front and center for this show. Number 1 priority this year.
Here's a couple more videos to wet your whistle.
This is one I contributed to the interwebz. This was in Lawrence, KS at Liberty Hall. I was able to successfully start a sing-a-long of 'Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy' from 'Once' ....it was pretty surreal to say the least, especially when Glen and the band started singing along. I never claimed to be a good singer...(or sober).
Glen just playing behind the theater he was at that night, serenading whoever wants to listen.
One of his best songs in my opinion.
Now lets not say anything more about this guy so we can have the show all to ourselves.
I've been hooked on his solo album since the lineup was announced. I wasn't sure about catching him at Roo, but now that I've seen everyone's opinion I just might, unless there's a crazy conflict in the way.
I saw him a year and a half ago at PJ20 and have been in love ever since. He was amazing up on stage with just himself and an acoustic guitar playing in the rain. CAN NOT WAIT to see him on the farm!!!!!
I really think Glen is an all-time great. The 08 Roo show is in my top 5 or so of all my Bonnaroos. I'm only just digging into his solo album but have been just captivated by his for his work a few years now. This and Jim James in the same tent is gonna be the best thing
I seldom think to listen to Glen Hansard in everyday life, but I will never miss a performance if I have the chance to check it out. Starting with Swell Season at Roo in '08, which I just wandered over to for a couple of songs and then could not leave. I've seen him solo three times since then, and he brings it every time. He may be the most engaging performer I've seen. He just makes you feel alive and a part of the show.

Im crossing my fingers for "Leave" and "Say it to me now".
