I've seen a lot of Inforooers have conflicts with festivals and trying to decide which fests to go to. I didn't notice a solid singular thread for just that, so I thought maybe we could use one.
My current problem is that with DeLuna Fest going under, I need a new fall fest to go to. As a poor college student that makes just enough to get by, I can only afford two serious fests a year. Hangout is my spring/summer fest, and DeLuna was my fall fest. I've basically narrowed it down to 3 choices: Voodoo, ACL, and Fun Fun Fun. I've never done any of the 3 before.
Voodoo is the closest to me, and is a solid festival every year with plenty to see. I've potentially have somewhere to stay if I go. If I hadn't missed early-birds, I'd probably pulled the trigger.
ACL is the one that most intrigues me. Since it's one of the biggest fests nationally and it provides two weekends to possibly go now. Possible place to stay. I've never been to Austin before though.
FFF had in my opinion one of the best lineups all year last year, and there's a lot to do after the fest is over, and it's not as big and intimidating as ACL. Again, possible place to stay. Plus, I believe it had the cheapest full price tickets of the 3, in case I have to make a last minute change or decision.
If anyone could help me out, it would be much appreciated.
I always have a blast at Voodoo. Lines are never bad for anything, the weather's great, it's easy to get to, and you can do what you want. I haven't been to ACL since 2009, but we're heading over for weekend 2 this year. I love Austin, though I won't have time to get out to Hamilton Pool or the Greenbelt or anything since we're just in and out for the festival. Skip The Salt Lick and instead take a side trip to Lockhart to hit Smitty's, Black's, or Kreuz for BBQ. ACL's a different scene than Voodoo although they were comparable for a few years between 2007-2010. There are kick ass late night shows in the city for Voodoo, not so much in Austin. They have aftershows, but they basically shut down at 2am unless you know where to go. I haven't been to FFF, though that'll change sometime soon. I can't quite ever line it up.
First things first: There's no conflict between Voodoo, FFF, and ACL because they're on different weekends. There is a conflict between FFF and Bear Creek though. I'm joshing...if I had to pick one and was on a budget, it would absolutely be Voodoo. New Orleans is the best city in the country and experiencing it during halloween is the best. This will be it's 15th anniversary and I'm confident that they are going to have an amazing lineup this year. Despite having what appeared to be a disappointing lineup on paper for the past two years, for me, Voodoo has had the best two: music discoveries: Red Baraat and Cheick Hamala Diabate. best sets at a festival: Soundgarden (haters gonna hate, but this was before that turd of an album dropped) and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. absolutely incredible song performances that made me cream my pants: raconteurs' blue veins > NY&CH's walk like a giant
Now, if you want to have your quacking face melted off by a bunch of metal/punk, then FFF is going to win every year. Start saving now and find a friend to go with you. If they get King Diamond and a completely stacked lineup the causes me to drool all over myself again this year, I might choose it over Bear Creek if I can afford to and you can ride with me. It's doubtful though because I'm definitely doing Jazzfest > Wanee > Hangout > Roo > Voodoo this year and may only be able to afford to do Bear Creek due to funds & vacation time left.

After talking with my friend from Austin, I think I'm narrowed down to Voodoo and FFF. I know the Voodoo lineup is gonna be stacked, but just like longinus said, that metal/punk combo of FFF is calling me. I wanted to go so bad last year, would have been my last shot to see Refused plus the scheduling was so perfect, I could have transferred between the Black and Red Stages mostly all weekend without missing anyone I wanted to see, with a couple of acts on the other stages thrown in, like it was tailor-made for me.
If I skip BayFest (which is me and my dad's bonding time, plus BayFest is just fun in general), then there's a very slight chance that I could swing both and still be able to go to Hangout 2014, given getting those free places to stay. Still having to think about it a lot though. I've got until June to really make a decision. Anyone else have some experiences?
Out of those 3, the only one I've been to is FFFFest. I've been 3 years starting back in 2007. The last time I've been is two fests ago, when the infamous Danzig set was. FFFFest is obviously smaller then ACL, but it's lineup is always amazing, especially for the punk/metal kid in you. I do wish it was still at Waterloo park, but I understand the move since they've outgrown that venue. The fest ends at either 10 or 11, can't remember which, due to Austin's noise ordinance (here's to looking at you Glenn!), but there are always a plethora of aftershows at venues all across Austin that are included with your ticket.
I've always had a great time at FFFFest, it won't disappoint. And yes, if you have a serious BBQ craving, hit up Smitty's in Lockhart...your perception of brisket will be shattered!
After serious thought, I've decided on Voodoo. It's closer, I have a 99% chance of having somewhere to stay, NIN being perceived as a virtual lock, its in my all-time favorite city I've already been to, and with it being the 15th anniversary it's sure to have one of it's best lineups yet.
I will be keeping an eye on FFF though. If my current financial status changes drastically positive before the next time tix go on sale (in June), I'm gonna make an attempt to go to both festivals.
Anyone know any cheap places to stay in NOLA, just in case I can't get somewhere?

To get the full experience of Voodoo, you need to hit up a late late shows fri and sat night, so I would book something in warehouse district (much cheaper than in the quarter) and walk to most venues from there or it's a cheap cab ride. I use to stay at the Queen & Crescent back in the day before several friends moved to nola, but they are pricey now ($180ish/night). O'Keefe Plaza or Cotton Exchange look like the cheapest options now in that area ($130ish/night). But if you don't plan on getting wasted, you can find something for half the price of those up the interstate a bit like that Super 8 on Chef Menteur. Some of the local nola people here may have better recommendations. I haven't booked a hotel in nola in several years now.
FFF vs. Bear Creek (Gotta do Bear Creek this year, hated missing it last year) Jazz Fest 1 vs. Austin Psych Fest..... it's just so much easier to do JF and will cost like $400 less. Really wish I could make it out.
