Where do you guys recommend I rent an RV this year? Last year I rented from Camping World, but the only place to pick up was in NY and that drive in the RV was too much (time and gas wise). Cruise America is a name I've seen thrown around but I heard bad things about them.

Thanks for responding guys!
Unfortunately my friends are being really stingy with money this year, and it looks like we might be camping out instead. I'm gonna be whining like a spoiled brat because i've already had the luxury of RVing it last year (my first roo).

Cruise America is alright, but they charge extra for the generator which really adds up after running the AC over the weekend.
This year we're doing www.campingworld.com which appears to have fewer add on fees and at the moment looks like it will be a few hundred dollard cheaper.

That's good to know. We did not enjoy our experience with El Monte last year, though I think it's a chain and our experience may have been just due to the local operation.

Not sure campingworld is in the DMV area, my friends are picking up in Chicago.
Cruise America - our experience was the unit was older and more than gently used. We had to duct tape all of the cabinets, drawers, and doors closed to keep them from slamming around while we drove. PITA. Would not do them again. Over priced for what you get.
Read a lot of bad reviews regarding El Monte.
We have had EXCELLENT results with Northside RV's in Lexington KY. They are about 4 hours from Roo. We have done a Class A (The big arse buses) RVs a few times with them. Always in great shape! Clean, handle well, lots of space with the slide outs and IMO the price was very reasonable considering how many you can sleep comfortably. The generator hours were not pricey, and we never ran out of fuel. When we did have an issue, we called Jennifer at NS and she walked me through the fix it steps, done, all good. (Tripped a switch because the kido's were running TOO many things at once.) And you will not see any no-smoking signs in those RV's but you also never smell smoke or anything unpleasant. The only issue we have had is the air mattress on the pull out couch has leaked every time. $20 stop at walmart fixed that each time.
We drive down from RI to lexington, leave our SUV with them, and off we go. Only down side is you have to drive through 'Dear Kentucky '. Have gotten a reservation there as late as feb.
Mentioned this before in many a thread... if you are not used to RV's consider getting motion sickness tablets and having them on board. Most RV's have a very gentle, barely noticable sway either side to side with the cab overs or up and down with the buses. When in doubt - pop that pill before you go.

Our standard mode is to rent the RV close to home so that we can completely pack it out. We used cruise america in 2008, and had decided against using the ever again while packing FOR the trip. I found a local company, and we've used them the last 5 years. They are more exoensive on paper but end up neing much cheaper upon retrn, NO extras ever charged, nicer unit and contract, and all around much more pleasant experience.

^^^ Agree.. stay away from the chains if you can. Search all of the RV dealers in nearby states and go with a dealer that also rents. Due to the travel, we jam a metric ton of stuff in and on top of the santa fe, then we get the fuds and booze and a few last minute things at a walmart in KY so when we role in we are all ready to go go go. : )
