Hi! I've been lurking for a while now but finally made an account. You guys have all been super helpful and given some great resources. Sorry if this has been covered - I couldn't find any threads with the answers I'm looking for but if I overlooked it please just direct me there.
This is my first time going to Roo and my first big festival. I was thinking I'd get my hands on two 6-8 person tents (or one 6/8 person, and one 4 person), I found a few decent ones online. Most likely will have 6-8 people going down and two cars.
A friend of mine who is coming (and who has been to other festivals before) is telling me that it's a stupid idea to have 4 or 5 of us stay in each tent (which I thought would be fun? yes, hot, but fun). Instead he's saying we should all get individual, smaller tents, which I think is ridiculous but maybe he's right? I think it kind of sucks the fun out of some of the experience if we're all going to bed and waking up separately but I guess as long as we're all together during the day and if we have a canopy type deal we'll be fine.
But in terms of keeping food, coolers, and everything else, would you recommend two bigger tents or 5-6 smaller one person tents (I assume similar to this ) ?? Also with the amount of space you get with two cars, I'm just really wondering which option makes the most sense? Any help would be appreciated~!!!!!!

I tend to take how many people a tent is "made for" and cut it in half. An 8 person tent would probably comfortably sleep 5 max. Might not always be the case but atleast in my experience. Last year my group was 9 people with 3 cars. 1 medium sized tent sleeping 3, 2 small tents sleeping 2, and one individual tent, with one left over sleeping in the car or under the EZ up. I did 5 of us in large tent one year and one thing I didnt like is once one person wakes up in the morning, your basically awoken too, same goes for people getting back at all hours.

I would think it's silly to do that many small/single tents. We have always taken between 1 and 4 large tents, depending on the size of the group. (plus, with that many singles, all the guy lines get ANNOYING.)
4 people per vehicle is pretty tight. Id reccomend no more than 3 per car. So if 8 of you come, bring 3 cars. Thats my opinion.
As far as the set up goes, I would suggest getting 2 ez ups per car and making a huge fort room out of them. Put them butted up against each other and put 2 8 man tents side by side. This will leave you with about a 10x20 (or 10X30 if 3 cars) area to hang out, eat, cool off etc. The key to this ez up fort is having PLENTY of sheets, tarps, tapestries etc to completely cover 3 sides (Id recommend leaving the side with your cars parked open, because the cars give some additional shade kind of. This set up is really pretty tit, and alllows for lots of dark shade, good air flow believe it or not, and lots of shelter.
Also, they make a kickass 12 man tent that would easily fit 8 people, it has sheets separating different areas.
Bring blindfold and earplugs so you can sleep past the time someone has to pee
That many individual tents will definitely not fit in the space you will have between 2 cars.
thanks, i figured this would be the case. now the hard part will be convincing my (stubborn) friend that his idea is no good.
Try simple math to show your friend. That tent that you posted in the OP is 8'x3' (not taking into account the guylines)... that times 5 or 6... well you can see where this is going

Or just show him the thread where people say his idea is ridiculously implausible.

ah thank you for this info! there will probably be 6-7 of us, but if it does turn out to be 8, 3 cars is a must. i am visualizing it all now and it helps a lot.
also i might as well ask, do you think arriving wednesday night around 9/10 pm will be ok in terms of setting up the campsite in the dark? how much light is there to go by? i have a 15 hour drive from NY and ideally would like to leave really early wednesday morning. if it's better and makes more sense to just wait until sunrise thursday to set up the camp, i'll time the drive so that i get there thursday morning but i think i'd rather get there the night before...

you'll definitely be in the dark if you show up at that time, but I'd still recommend getting there around then if you can. I'm coming from CT and I'm leaving early Tuesday evening so that I can get there early Wednesday afternoon even with multiple stops. You could probably use your car's headlights and a few flashlights to help set up camp.

Have you ever owned a tent? If not, can I give you something to think about?
Whichever tent(s) you wind up with, practice setting it up at home a couple of times before you get to Roo. Otherwise it'll take you about ten times as long as it should when you arrive at the festival…with no light to read the instructions by, a big happy distracting commotion all around you, all the misguided advice you can possibly tolerate, etc.
And as long as you've got your tent set up: test the rain fly for water resistance with a garden hose or a few pitchers of water or whatever. If the seams need sealing or the fly needs some extra help, Kiwi makes a good fabric treatment called Camp Dry that you can find in the shoe section of big box stores for about five bucks a bottle.

I have set up in the middle of the night (like 2 a.m.) plenty of times and it has never been a problem. There is enough ambient light plus light from car headlights to set everything up. You should pack your car so that your tent, ez up and whatever else you will put out is easy to access as soon as you stop.
Like someone else said, practice putting your tent together before you get there. It will save you a world of trouble.

Everyone has given really good answers, but to throw my 2 cents in- last year there were 4 or 5 guys at the end of our row who all had individual tents and they took up A LOT of space and made it so everyone else couldn't camp in front of their cars. Not a huge deal, but annoying nonetheless.

thank you! i haven't owned a tent for the past 5-6 years so this is really good advice!!! and since i've never been to roo i'm happy i now know a bit more of what to expect.
