Our group plans to stop in Knoxville Wednesday night to get a final shower and a full night sleep. AS far as where to stay I'm pretty clueless. We're traveling from Philly so we'll be coming in I40w. I've found a few hotels off the HWY but I'm not trying to stay in a sketchy neighborhood with luggage and other things strapped to the roof. Any suggestions?
Besides the Bates Motel and that shithole from "Vacancy", I'm open to serious suggestions too.
Don't stay in East Knoxville. Turkey Creek is a pretty safe bet, but the rooms may a little more pricey. Watch what hotel you go to there because actual Turkey Creek is fine, but Lovell Road is nearby and has some shady hotels. If you start looking up some specific places, I can give you a better idea if it is a good place to stay or not.

We're Knoxvillian's. stay in west knoxville. That's honestly the safest and most comfortable area. Inside turkey creek is a little expensive. Check out places on cedar bluff and west hills. If you guys wanna hang while you're here, hmu.

My last name is Bates, what's wrong with my motel? It's not like my mother is a maniac or a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?

Yeah for sure. I'll be looking for places to kill time and some good food. Much appreciated.

The only warning about West Hills is do NOT stay at the Magnuson Hotel unless you want a) a hooker b) some crack c)to get robbed. It's right across from the mall, so you would think it would be legit.

Huh. Well two out of three usually makes it worth my while. Thanks for the tip.
Try any hotels off Cedar Bluff, avoid anything East. For good food and a great draft beer secetion try Barley's Taproom and Pizzarea. It's in downtown Knoxville but worth it. Just don't wander off the beaten path in the area after midnight. Watch your speed on the interstate in Knoixville, it goes form 70 to 55 and KPD will ding ya.

Yes! East Tennessee has sooo many police. Even worse when you get around the Lenoir City / Loudon area.

We're from just outside NYC and we always stop in Knoxville on the way down, and sometimes on the way back up and every year we've stayed at the Holiday Inn just off of I-40 on Cedar Bluff. The area is great and it's a little off the beaten path so there isn't too much city noise. The hotel is quite nice and not too expensive if you have some people splitting the cost with you. The only bad thing about it is it's a little difficult to find when you just get off the highway (there's like a "sneaky" road by one of the lights that doesn't really show up on the GPS). Other than that, the hotel and the area is great.
And as to what others are saying, definitely watch your speed on the interstate. I got pulled over on the way back and I could have gotten a very hefty ticket but luckily the cop was nice and only put me down as going 5 mph over (I was going MUCH faster).
Anything west of campus/downtown is your best bet. Also, check out Harriman. Its a little bit West of Knoxville and according to Google maps it shaves 30 minutes off of your travel to Manchester by taking back roads.

Did they tear down the Nation's Best out west? I think I heard they did, but if not, I wouldn't recommend staying there either.

It's been gone for a while now. That place was a sh*thole.

Also, don't stop on Lovell road. Seems like a nice area-- I mean, it is-- but it's also a main truck stop and you'll see some yuckoos running around. Also bed bugs were reported at the motel 6 and before it was a motel 6 it was a days inn and a girl got kidnapped and murdered from her room. It was so sad.... The holiday inn off cedar bluff is honestly the best place. You're also close to a grocery, lots of food choices, and near my crib. Woot.

Literally 2 miles from that Lovell road exit is a good one. My parents life in a nice neighborhood 3 miles from there and haven't ever had an issue. Knoxville is funny. We're so small.

I do love how quickly it switches from the nice newness of Turkey Creek to the total sketchiness of Lovell Road Motel 6. They're like a mile apart.

They finally close the vista inn next to Cotton Eyed Joe. That was a crack heads paradise! So creepy.

Did it just go out of business or did it get a nuisance closure? I am sure it had earned a nuisance closure either way.
Not sure, but it was nasty. Cockroaches from hell. Yuck. I went in there once to rescue a friend from a bad situation and I was literally watching crack heads tweaking on the sidewalk in the the little alley between the buildings. Eeek
Hey Knoxville peeps. I am still debating whether or not I am going to Roo this year. I've gone the past six years in a row with my little brother but he can't make it. I don't want to miss out though, so I'm looking for options. I can take a super cheap bus from NYC to DC to Knoxville and arrive Wednesday night around 7pm. If anyone has an extra spot in their car to Roo, let me know. Or if anyone is camping out near by early or maybe even a couch to crash, or floor to sleep on let me know!! Just throwing ideas out there! Let me know! BONNAROOOOOOOO!!!

We are leaving before then Yvonnaroo but if you decide you are going PM me and I'll connect you with a buddy of mine who might be looking to split gas and have room.
As far as hotels, Knoxville is not that sketch no matter where you stay. What you see from the exterior pretty much is what you get. Merchants isn't far from downtown and they seem to have a few decent cheap places, the Clinton exit is where we live and we have had several new hotels go up. Check out tripadvisor.com or hotwire and book one with high approvals and grab you a deal while you are at it.
