I'm thinking about bringing a carton of Marlboro Lights with me to barter, I don't smoke cigarettes. Does anyone have a better barter item idea? -Frederick

Four Loko. in TN four loko is only like 6% abv or something, but its 12% abv in PA, and every year we bring a bunch down with us and people go crazy for it. We've had people see us drinking them, and just walk up and offer $10 for a can.

We had a ton of people come up to us the first night (Wednesday night/Thursday morning) asking if they could buy/trade beer with us. We didn't at the time thinking that we'd want to drink it all, but we could have easily sold or traded a case of cold beer that night.

UGH that stuff!!! It tastes like Flinstones Children's Chewable Vitamins and fermented wino piss. BUT it is VERY effective, I once heard it described as blackout in a can. They were right.

cheap little 2 oz. bottles of hand sanitizer are my favorite barter items. it's amazing how many people forget this. I bring a whole bag full of these life savers, and hand em out... although more often just in the spirit of good will, not caring for something in return. In 2010 I brought a cooler full of jello shots, and traded for just about anything (Food, liquid shots, other fun substances), but they didn't last long. Also, sunblock spray- i've had people offer money to get sprayed down in Centeroo when they forget theirs.

As I go thru life learning, I was astounded at the fact that you cannot sell, trade, barter, etc at BMan if you follow the creed. I think to barter should be ok though at fests but I can see how the LEO and management in general would love to see no sales of anything in place. Since the day of the Dead, shakedown street (or its equivalent) does seem to get smaller each year and not bigger. WORST idea. Chits ..... cr****

May want to consider menthols, we are a slightly more desperate people and they are much harder to find at Roo

I do not smoke, so I do not understand the finer details of smoking...but how are smokers seemingly always out of cigarettes? Why not just bring a ton?
Not to get too off subject, but here is my theory - A good portion of folks simply bum to save money, but I think many just under-estimate how much they will smoke at Roo. Folks typically smoke more while they are in more social environments, especially if it involves alcohol or other things of that nature. If one good solid evening of partying can easily lead to a pack of smokes, imagine what 4 solid days of party'n on a farm can do. I usually buy a carton for myself which allows me to share some at Roo and I haven't run out yet.
BUT it is VERY effective, I once heard it described as blackout in a can. They were right.
It was more effective as a "black out in a can" when it still contained caffeine. The caffeine kept you awake and allowed you to get even drunker than you might otherwise before passing out due to the sedative effect of the alcohol. It is no wonder that the attornies general of several states threatened to sue the pants off the makers, if not ban their products outright, if they didn't at least remove the caffeine. Of course you can still achieve the same effect by slamming some Red Bull (ick), energy shots, No-Doz, or coffee, along with your choice of booze. Intoxicated + alert can be a bad combo, and lead to alcohol poisoning.
I'm not a fan of Four Loko, et al. but I find it interesting that they are unavailable yet in demand in TN, so I might bring a few just to make friends with neighbors and/or barter. Here in Ohio, you can buy 10%-12% malt liquor and knock-off Kool-Aide at just about any gas station or convenience store, seven days a week. Might try bringing some cigs, too, even though I don't smoke anymore.

In 2006 I bartered one of my kids for a better camping spot. The Mrs. was not pleased.
In 2007 I offered a woman sex for a sweet vintage Velvet Underground t-shirt. She offered me the shirt if I would promise not to have sex with her and to make a conscious effort to stay out of her field of vision.

It's not that they don't have four Loko in TN, they do... But because of their alcohol laws they have to keep it under 6.5% in order to sell it in gas stations and places like that. Luckily ours is still the original 12%. And it definitely used to be blackout in a can, now it just tastes like crappy liquor and bad juice, but the n00bs still love it.
Cigarettes are on my list and I don't smoke. I plan on having sunscree and hand sanitizer too just to be nice. I am sure people will reciprocate you know.
I don't have any kids. What the hell am I supposed to do?
Using someone else's kids to barter is still effective, and even easier since you don't have to raise them. Surely you can pick up a couple on the way. I'd give you some tips on luring them into your windowless van (although I hear a big, friendly mustache and candy do the trick), but I suddenly have an intense desire for BBQ.
*No, if you are immune to humor, I am NOT serious. Besides, children are way too valuable in the field to be used as festival barter.
Those who live around the farm know where I am talking about but I spent two years at Smyrna AF base. In the day, Coors beer was like gold, even warm which was a no no . We would always bring Coors back to the base to "barter" with. I think it was a bowl of Thai rice for a case of Coors .... cr****

Sunscreen is literally one of the best things I can think of. I usually bring no less than 4 bottles of 100 SPF sunscreen. I don't barter it for anything, just let people use it when they run out, forget, etc. Same with hand sanitizer and bottles of water. Some people, when you save them from dehydration, sunburn, or body odor will return the good will later. Alcohol is always a popular medium though.

I bought a mess of different colored bandannas last year from a flea market. Mainly because bandannas are to me what sunglasses are to Elton John.
By the second day I had given away most of them, just as a sign of goodwill to the neighbors and other awesome strangers. But some people gave me stuff in return. In exchange, I got a Hello Kitty wristwatch (very useful, seeing as I don't wear a watch and I didn't have to drain my phone battery to check time), half a pack of cigs, and this really nifty keychain light that was incredibly bright. REALLY useful for finding awesome stuff on the ground after late-night sets.
I have never bartered so much as just shared stuff with a cool neighbor (food, alcohol), but this year I am bringing a few extras of essential items that I have picked up on the cheap, and plan to hand them out to people in need: mini bottles of spray sunscreen, mini LED flashlights on carabiners, mini bottles of hand sanitizer, individual packs of Kleenex, small packs of wipes... any other small, inexpensive, and useful items anyone can think of that I should keep an eye out for? I'm always looking for roo stuff these days!
