Background: Animal Collective are originally from Baltimore, although they are now spread out across New York, LA, and Lisbon. They make a concoction of experimental, psychedelic, noise, folk, electronic, pop awesomeness and are truly unique. They are one of the stranger, different, at times difficult, and interesting bands to achieve such a high level of success in indie rock and flirt with the mainstream.

The albums Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, Danse Manatee, and Campfire Songs are actually pre-Animal Collective and are attributed to the members who recorded the album, which isn't all of them on any one of the albums. They also have a whole slew of EP's, live albums, and visual albums that worth checking out. Panda Bear has released excellent and acclaimed solo records and the other members have been involved in solo/other projects, as well. Suggested Listening:

Live Show:
Animal Collective have been known to play almost whole sets of unreleased material for upcoming albums. At a show I attended in 2005/2006, there stage setup was pretty much bare bones they started a drone that never stopped for the entirety of the show. It was like one long noise experiment that included a glimpse hear or there of something recognizable, but mostly bits and pieces of future tunes. Now days, they have turned into quite the live spectacle, with an elaborate stage setup and plenty of hits and music to make you move.
