I would consider pop music to be mainstream and would not consider björk to be mainstream. Therefore I would not consider björk to be pop! My two cents.

I was gonna write a bunch more than this and come to the same conclusion, but this sums it up well so I'll second it.
If you want to get technical, "pop" refers to "popular music" and being a multi-platinum selling artist would make you "popular music" so yes... technically Bjork is a "pop" artist.

So in your opinion pop music is not a style of music but by album sales. That is an interesting theory. I agree that artist who sell alot of albums are popular, however some go to great lengths to create music that will be popular for a moment and then fade away while others create original music that moves people. Jimi Hendrix is one example of a multi platinum recording artist who I would not consider to have made pop music however popular his music was. Some people are popular dispite never wavering from their creative impulses.
Hottie and the blowfish went multi platinum with cracked rear view as did pink Floyd with dark side of the moon. The only thing these albums have in common is the number of copies they sold. The Beatles abbey road sold a lot of copies as did matchbox 20s yourself or someone like you. Another example of albums with similar sales but very little else in common!
I can imagine that Hoodie and matchbox sold most of their albums in a relatively short period of time while the Beatles and pink Floyd continue to sell albums to this day.
Just my opinion. I know, they're like a holes everyone has got one.

She was ranked thirty-sixth in VH1's "The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll,"[7] eighth in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music,"[8] and sixtieth in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time."[9]
That's pretty Popish as opposed to say Sun Ra ......
I love to hijack but with a purpose.... or is that porpoise ...
Sun Ra
Bassnectar, you might start with this one ... Is this then timeless? Yikes

Well, in my opinion, "pop" is sort of an umbrella term. I have heard Micheal Jackson, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, MGMT, Kanye West, The Beatles, and Taylor Swift all referred to as "pop" music. The only thing that these artists' output have in common is high album sales. None of their music really sounds comparable for the most part other than the fact that it's all generally accessible and familiar sounding to a large portion of music listeners. There was music in the 50's what was refferred to as pop music back then, but we call it "oldies" today. All of the artists I mentioned could fall under quite a few different genres at times, but they ALL fit under the criteria of pop music. Bjork is obviously a little on the far edge of what most consider pop music, but I believe that her popularity, notoriety, and the fact that a lottttt of people at least know who she is, whether they have heard a song of hers or not, fits the bill.

Pop artists make music that appeals to large established audience. Bjork is way too innovative to fit into that category. And I for one am thrilled that I'll get to see her.
She has said numerous times that she makes pop music. I think she was more of a pop artist during the Debut and Post years, but has ventured into an array of sub-genres since that time. So my answer would be: kinda

This is what I was going to say. She certainly started out as a pop artist, but now she is much more of a surrealist. I liked the early stuff much better myself.
I understand when people say she is a pop artist. Both sides have an argument. It depends on if you take her whole career into account or answer based on what she is today.

At one point in time I think she was headed the pop route...now that she is not in the spotlight, I think her popularity has faded from the mainstream but grown with the more adult/musicianship crowd.

I would put her more towards the electronic end or electronic-pop at the most. I think in her beginnings with the cover of It's Oh So Quiet she may have been but she has moved far away from that since.
