Members: Zachary Cole Smith (Vocals, Guitar) Andrew Bailey (Guitar) Devin Ruben Pere (Bass) Colby Hewitt (Drums) Formation:
Cole Smith a touring guitarist for The Beach Fossils, started a side-project in 2011 originally known as Dive. The band consisted of longtime friend and fellow New York City musician Andrew Bailey on Guitar (Like Smith, also from Connecticut), Devin Ruben Perez a bassist from the New York City music scene as well, and drummer Colby Hewitt from California (originally from The Smith Westerns). Cole Smith came up with the name Dive, named after a Nirvana song also entitled "Dive". Smith explained to Pitchfork that "everybody in the band is a water sign, that's kind of why the name Dive really spoke to us all. In May 2012, the band changed their name to DIIV, according to Smith, "out of respect for Dirk Ivens and the original Dive," a 1990s Belgian group.
History:
DIIV signed with Capture Tracks and released two singles, "Human", and "Sometime". Cole Smith did most of the demo recordings on a Mac Book in his bedroom. Smith said "I wanted the demos to sound a whole lot worse than I know I could make them, so by the time I recorded an album it would feel as though it was the second album". DIIV released the single "Geist" in April 2012, and released a Music Video for "How Long Have You Known" in May 2012. Oshin the bands debut album, was released on June 26, 2012. The album received great reviews from critics including, Stereogum, and Pitchfork, ending 2012 on both's Best Albums Of 2012 list's.
"Oshin"
Influences: The songs on Oshin were influenced by Krautrauk, C86 bands,Nirvana, and world music. "People didn’t seem to pick up on the influence of these Malianguitar players, especially Baba Salah whose record I got at the library," Smith said. "He's a huge star in Mali, but he has this one record called Borey and it was huge for me and influenced the way I experimented with melody."

Really excited about having these guys at Bonnaroo this year, a definite top 3 for me!
Diiv is gonna be pretty cool! I am really looking forward to them also. I downloaded some stuff of theirs from nyctaper.com and they got my attention in a mellow chill sort of way.
