Hello fellow Roo'ers! This will be my fourth straight year going to Roo, but this time around my boyfriend and I are riding down from Massachusetts just the two of us.
I'm a huge foody, so every year I look forward to seeing the sights and eating! I love a good steak, but up north we don't really have any places where you can go get a nice, juicy, Ron Swanson steak! I was wondering if any of you know of a steakhouse that we can hit on the way home for some rewarding post-Roo grub. Anywhere on (or sort of along) the way from TN to MA, I'm just trying to find a big juicy steak!

Lastly, they also have a mark of a great steakhouse in that they mention in the menu specifically that they offer well-done steaks but do not recommend them.
Normally we get a hotel room in Gatlinburg and visit the mountains and relax before heading home. Is there anything in Knoxville besides giant steak that would make it worth staying out there instead?

I wouldn't really say so. abrakapokus or Gibran might disagree though. How do you get from Manchester to Gatlinburg? If you go through Knoxville by 40E, a slight course correction will take you past Ye Olde on the way to Gatlinburg.
I'm not too familiar with Tennessee restaurants. Maybe wolfmanjess has some insights. This is the one joint I'm anxious to try in Nashville... they cook what they want, adventurous eating, but pricey.
What you have here is THE BEST BBQ in Nashville HANDS DOWN! Its a small little shack on the outskirts of Nashville that no one knows about! In this picture you have Pulled Pork, Smoked Ribs, and Brisket, with sides of MacNCheese and Potatoe Salad. If I wasnt at work right now I'd considering f*cking it instead of eating it. crazykittensmile can verify how good it is!
In the Knoxville area, Chandler's Deli is a good bet for bbq/soul food.
I've never been to Chicago, and I don't doubt that what whoreshack said is true, but I'd agree that Ye Olde is quality.
For steaks in Gatlinburg, my parents always go to the Peddler. I've only been once, a long time ago. If I remember right, they cut your steak at your table. It was really good when I went, but it looks like the reviews online are somewhat mixed.
Just stop at any hole-in-the-wall bbq place you see, that doesn't accept credit cards. You know its good and authentic then!
Also, check out Famous Dave's in Chattanooga... been there once- not bad.
There is a Famous Dave's in Knoxville too. It's a chain, but still good. We have one relatively close to us in Reno, and it's one of the few decent BBQ places around here.

I want to do Catbird Seat one day, but it is the same cost as a tier one Bonnaroo ticket more or less. In Nashville right now Rolf and Daughters is my favorite place going, followed by Lockeland Table. However by Bonnaroo time Husk Nashville should be open, and I think it is going to be amazing, better get the reservations way the hell ahead of time though.
For comfort food I would do Monells, for slightly healthier comfort food I would try the Silly Goose, For Nashville comfort food get some Hot Chicken. Since most people should not go to Price's the first time I would try Pepperfire, or Mrs Hattie B's.
Stay away from the chains, BBQ in K-town is this www.deadendbbq.com period
I've only eaten at Dead End once, and it was absolutely fine, but it didn't blow me away at all. I don't know, though. My boyfriend ate there a different time and loved it, so maybe I just need to give it another shot.
For the record, Chandler's that I mentioned above is not a chain. Usually, when I go there, I end up ordering all sides, but my brother and mom both always get bbq, and it's really good.
Generally speaking, I prefer local to chains, but I still say that Famous Dave's serves up some mighty tasty food.
And finally, while I think it's technically a chain (there are multiple locations, but I think they are all within Knoxville), and basically fast food as far as time, money, and manner of service, I really like Buddy's bbq.
Has anybody ever tried BBQ from M&M Catering off Middlebrook in Knoxville? It doesn't look like much, and it's carry-out only, but hot damn they have delicious food there. It's fairly inexpensive as well. I lived off Walker Springs Rd. during my last year of law school, and went there at least once per week.

That was the best! We used to live off-off of Middlebrook, and they would set up in the little shack in the parking lot of the laundromat on Middlebrook. I assumed they had closed because they weren't there last time I drove by that way during the summer, but it looks like they've just moved down the road a bit. I may have to hit them up next time I'm in Knoxville.

I have not, but I need to now since I work off Middlebrook.

Yeah, they moved down Middlebrook, maybe about a half mile further west. It's not a shack anymore, but it still isn't much to look at.

I haven't eaten there since '09, so I cannot guarantee the quality still holds up. However, if it's as good as it was back then, there is a chance you might have yourself a new favorite place to eat in Knoxville, or at least top 5.

Yeah, even longer for me. I moved out of Knoxville in '06, but I think the fact that they've been around at least 8 or 9 years now is a good sign.
