I have read an awful lot about how unhappy some people are about Dave Matthews' fans attending the festival. I am a 40 year old DMB fan. There are a good deal of fans that refuse to control their actions, but there are also a good deal of us that are disgusted by their behavior. We are the "silent majority" seeking a refuge. This will be my first year at Bonnaroo. I hope to find it there.

I really like Dave Matthews and I have been to tons of shows but I stopped going the last couple years. One reason is when I was at a Soldier field show I was smoking and a lady in front of me and my husband was urging her boyfriend to go get the cops. Her husband didn't but that woman was willing to totally screw our lives up over some pot. I can't stand to be at a place filled with 60,000 closed minded people like that. It is not the drunken frat boys that worry me it is people like her. Man has she heard Dave Matthews lyrics? He gets fucked up with the best of them would she have him busted too?
I am really hoping that having Dave at Bonnaroo will attract some cooler fans. I hate going to a Dave show and getting made fun of for how I look and dress. So if there were more people at the shows like me I would start going back to see just Dave again.
Well. DMB tends to draw the 16-24 year old high school/frat & sorority crowd who view concerts as a social event where they can scream loud as hell during radio songs then talk on their cell phones or spill beer on you from being stupid during songs they don't know. I stopped going to DMB shows for this very reason.
Fortunately, I don't think that crowd will be the majority at Bonnaroo. From what I could tell from reviews, the D&F Tour seemed pretty tame on the fan side so between that and three days with no showers, I confident things should be just fine.

I am a huge fan of dave and i definitely think that people like the ones mentioned above will go to bonnaroo just to see dave. I understand not going to dave shows because of those reasons, but to not see him at Bonnaroo I think would be crazy. Ive heard Dave and Friends is amazing and Im pretty pumped. I really dislike how people forget a good band once theyre popular. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Who were popular. Better have popular music actually be good than the stuff thats on the radio now.
I went to the Dave & Freinds shows in Hartford & MSG. I liked the crowd much better than the ones at DMB shows. Let me make this clear: I am not talking about the way people dress (because people always laugh at me for that), or if they are "some people who do or don't"( because I do). I am talking about people who behave as though they don't need to be responsible for their actions because they are fu(ked up. I'm talking about the @sshole who peed on me at the '99 show in Hartford. Or the moron who stood on to of my freind's car and peed on the roof in '02. I'm talking about people who scream through a beautiful song like Crush or #41. But I still go because the music moves me enough to brave the crowd. I'm just saying...don't hate all of us. We aren't all the same. Dave says at the end of each show "Y'all take care of eachother". Some of us do that.
80,000 people in a field There is bound to be someone that is disagreeable. Smile Smile Smile Let's stop putting people in a box because they are DMB fans or Phish fans or Dead fans.
I am a big Dave fan..been since 95. I have't been to a show because A. Never have the money when he comes around and B. The fans(teeny boppers and prepies) were just so damn annoying. I went to see Dave at Giants stadium in 2000 and I had a group of 6 girls on floor level 22 rows away standing in their seats right in front of me sreaming their heads off.
I have to agree though, the dave fans that will be at roo will be the hardcore ones that are a bit more respectful to others around them.

Hi guys. This is my first year at Bonnaroo. I am a huge DMB fan and have been a member of the Warehouse for years. I personally haven't had any problems at the shows, but I am hoping that it doesn't start at Roo.
I know that I am going to sound stupid for saying this but until last week I honestly didn't know that there were people who hated DMB and their fans. Someone on the WH forums said something about possible problems at Roo with the Anti-Dave people. For a minute I couldn't believe what I was reading. I can repect the fact that people might not like them, but in going to an extent where people are causing trouble is obsurd. How pathetic is that?
I agree that most DMB fans attending Roo will be the hardcore ones, like myself.
its not really hate, so much as it is frustration with people who ruin your concert experience. alas, DMB has become a band that is just not that fun to see live because of the bad element of fans that act like asses. but every band has that, but DMB just has a major contengent at most shows...plus DMB is getting damn expensive to see.
Here is all I know when it comes to this Dave Matthews subject. The Dave and Friends tour this winter was incredible. I saw the tour in Rochester and it was amazing. Dave, Trey and Tim put on an incredible performance and I am SURE that they will have some pretty special things in store for us at Bonaroo - so we should ALL look forward to that. ;D
Hopefully the people that seem to have such a problem with DMB fans will avoid his show at Bonnaroo. I'm a member of the Warehouse and I've been to countless DMB shows and never had a problem. I definitely agree with Jomama...let's stop stereotyping people just because they do or don't like a band. See yall there.
first of all there is no reason to dislike dave because of his fans. he is an amazing artist, and he creates great music. secondly, i think that youre gonna have annoying people at any show you go to. i just went to a moe. show in syracuse and i saw some pretty crazy things, like a naked girl running through the venue trying to get away from security, people yelling at the people working at the food vendors because of the prices, people passed out and throwing up all over the back of the venue. these kind of people are always gonna be around, just cant let them get the best of you. peace, love, life...enjoy music
just to chime in here, I am a 26 year old DMB fan, I have seen 25 DMB shows and will be at 30 by the end of the summer. I see many many other shows all year when I can't see dmb, but nothing is better for me than Dave related shows! I am quite excited to see very many of the shows at b-roo but the D&Friends is at the top of the list. I look at it this way, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. Hopefully the folks that don't like Dave will just go elsewhere
I agree with Curtis3. Any show that you go to there will be people that will annoy and disrespect. It really bothers me to hear people bashing an entire group when I am quite sure the majority of fans are decent. People, lets just go to Roo and enjoy the music and have fun together!!!!!!

Just thought I'd chime in...
I don't think those of us who are going to 'Roo are not the "bad" DMB fans some of you are talking about. that we are the people who love DMB, SCI, Phish and all the others who are going to be there. We're not the ones who pick fights with Phish and O.A.R. fans, we're the ones who love great music and have an open mind about what that really means.
Sadly, I have seen the "Anti-D&F" movement on the Phish boards...complete with a guy who is printing up a few thousand fliers to hand out. I feel that people who do things like that don't really "get" this music. If I encounter them at 'Roo, I'll just walk on by...and feel badly that they are going to miss Dave, Trey, Tim, Brady, Ray and Tony giving us an awesome show!
By the way, I saw D&F in Providence and Boston...they were my favorite shows of the whole year.
Yes, sadly there are some Phish phans that are just as narrow minded and foolish as some of the Dave fans out there. Some people are just too obscesed with ONE band. Open yourself up to new forms and styles of music, I say. Why hold one band up like they are it and everything else isn't? I've heard some phans say" what's Trey doing playing with Dave", like he's some sort of sellout. Now if Trey were to play with Maroon5.... ;D
yea im a real big dmb fan and have been since about 1998, and yea the crowd sucks, ive been to 9 shows and every time the scene seems to get worse but my love for daves music makes me unable to refuse, umm not sure where im goin with this but yea i wouldnt worry, those people dont seem like they would spend 3 days in the sun jsut to see dave...oh and in response to the popular complaint of young dmb fans, i started goin to shows when i was like 12 and ive always kept it real chill...so umm i guess dont judge a book by its cover? ???
Trying hard not to generalize here, but I think that a lot of folks that will be coming to see Dave are not familiar (or as familiar) with this whole jamband ethos that we have going for us at the 'roo. There are soooooo many bands at the 'roo, the vast majority of which have not had the exposure that Dave has had and to be able to play in front of new kids...to turn the dave fans on to some of this other music...is such a great thing!
Artists like jazz mandolin project, umphrey's mcgee, leftover salmon, femi kuti, etc. ...if peeps are turned on to them b/c they happen to see 'em while Dave isn't playing, its such an amazing thing. Continuing to expand and develop this community we have...
i want to share this bliss with everyone! -brendanp

Best post yet beepaphone. (I like the name). When I saw Robert Randolph and O.A.R. in Syracuse, I was a street teamer and I had a bunch of Robert Randolph and The Family Band stickers and flyers but no one would take them. Then after the show when RRFB completely blew O.A.R. out of the water, I couldnt give the stuff out fast enough. Its all about turning people on to good music. No one was born a fan of a band, but the first time you heard them or saw them in concert then you got to like them. Spread the good tunes baby!
Dave shouldnt be criticized for his fans, he cant pick and choose who listens to his music. I mean I do wish that some of the screwups that go to his shows werent there but I just try to look past that. This past year was probally the worst I've seen it, we had these little punks behind us mocking us the whole time we were dancing and just making fun of us, I wanted to turn around and ask them why they were there because they obviously werent enjoying the music if their attention was on us the whole time, but I kept my mouth shut. It seems like it gets worse every year but I still go because his music takes me away from all my problems, even if its only for a couple hours. I am so excited for Roo I cant hardly wait. My shows for this year start next weekend, going to see G-Love!

See, I think the exact opposite. I don't think the fans who don't know the big names on the line up would make the trip when they could spend the same money and go to the Gorge or Alpine.
In addition, though a lot of us saw D&F this winter and loved it, many people are craving the full band right now (me included!). Many of them probably spent a few hundred dollars on the Warehouse pre-order as well.
This is why I'm so psyched for 'Roo...the DMB types who are going won't be the "average fan" that people complain about...the DMB types will be US!
