I pretty much agree with all that has been said so far. Unfortunatly there are some annoying DMB "fans" out there, but I think the ones that are gonna spend the money to travel to B'roo are mostly fans that would be going anyways. I was planning on going to B'roo anyway, this year and the addition of D&F was just an added bonus

Just thought I'd chime in...
I don't think those of us who are going to 'Roo are not the "bad" DMB fans some of you are talking about. that we are the people who love DMB, SCI, Phish and all the others who are going to be there. We're not the ones who pick fights with Phish and O.A.R. fans, we're the ones who love great music and have an open mind about what that really means.
Sadly, I have seen the "Anti-D&F" movement on the Phish boards...complete with a guy who is printing up a few thousand fliers to hand out. I feel that people who do things like that don't really "get" this music. If I encounter them at 'Roo, I'll just walk on by...and feel badly that they are going to miss Dave, Trey, Tim, Brady, Ray and Tony giving us an awesome show!
By the way, I saw D&F in Providence and Boston...they were my favorite shows of the whole year.
I hope someone tries to hand me one of those flyers, I's actually like to have 2, one to take a piss on (so I don't hurt the grass) and another to wipe I my pooper with (you can never have to much TP!) I know some DMB fans are complete douchewagons, but they really aren't fans. They go for the mere fact that it is the cool thing to do for the summer. That's it. But I must tell you that I have been to 14 DMB related shows, and I still have loved everyone...people make too big of a deal about the fans and forget about the amazing talent that dave has....and I am not trying to say that dave is god, butt DMB has done [glow=red,2,300]A LOT[/glow] for the jam band scene in general....I was raised on the Grateful Dead, so luckily I already had a good appreciation for bands that made their life on the road, but even still DMB (along with the Dead) opened me up to so many more bands out there....Just look at the list of performers and see how many of them have either played with OR shared the stage with Dave:
Bob Weir (Plus DMB opened for the Dead in '95) Bob Dylan Trey Willie North Mississippi All Stars Guster Gov't Mule (Plus numerous shindigs w/ Warren) Robert randolph and the Family Band moe. Soulive Donavan Frankenshlogenhoser that is just compleely off the top of my head
Plus all of the others who have played past Bonnaroos
Not to mention all the work he has done with Widespread, Phish, Bela Fleck, Blues Traveler, Ben Harper, Santana, etc.
AND the fact that he runs a record label that gives artists a shot, that many major labels wouldn't even think about.
I'm not at all saying everyone should love this guy, but the fact that people dislike him strictly because of his fans and the fact that he is popular is insane. I believe they will go down as one of the greatest bands of all time and rightly so. And the fact that Dave, Trey, and Tim will be on a stage is something no true "jamband" music fan should miss. This may be the last time they all play together and there is no way that I will miss it.
Amen JWyatt. It IS insanity that some people won't give Dave a chance just cause he's popular and attracts a certain type of crowd. I saw Radiohead last summer and some of those same people were there. drunken frat boys walking around with their cell phones not even listening to the music. Too bad for them. I'll always go see Radiohead when they come around despite whatever crowd may be there. Go for the music and have a good time, I say.

Well said, all!
I think if we encounter any of these "DMB-haters", that we treat them well. Being a jerk will just fuel the negative connotation they have of DMB fans.
Maybe I'll try and convince them to listen to Cripple Creek or Fire (oh my gosh, I hope D&F play Fire). Maybe I'll just laugh about the sets they are missing if they are handing out those fliers.
The threads about those Phans make me wonder why they think they know better than Trey...clearly Trey thinks Dave's a great musician ("the greatest lyricist alive", if I'm not mistaken).
just found this article, thought it might be interesting to some people who have nothing but s h i t to tal about DMB...
Story from AP Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press (via ClariNet)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Dave Matthews Band will receive the special Chairman's Award at the upcoming NAACP Image Awards for its devotion to social and environmental causes and its "dignified representation of people of color," the civil rights group has announced.
With the awards, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People honors people and companies that support positive change for people of color in arts and entertainment. The honor will be bestowed at the March 6 awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Fox will broadcast the program on March 11.
The racially mixed music group includes drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, vocalist-guitarist Dave Matthews, saxophonist Leroi Moore and violinist Boyd Tinsley.
NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond, who chose the group for the special award, praised band members for their distinguished service to social causes and dignified representation of people of color.
"Dave Matthews Band demonstrated what commitment means in an artist. With their music and their generosity, they have made a difference in the lives of many," Bond said. "To see and hear them is to recognize great talent; to learn of their good deeds is to recognize they are good souls."
Dave Matthews Band released a statement Sunday saying, "It is a great honor to us that an institution with the history and accomplishments of the NAACP has chosen to recognize our actions. We will always greatly value this award."
The group's Bama Works Foundation has donated millions of dollars in grants to a variety of groups around the world, including conservation organizations for the Amazon rain forest, family farmers, youth community clubs and AIDS charities.
Previous NAACP Chairman's Award recipients include actor Danny Glover, cartoonist Aaron McGruder and singer-actress Janet Jackson.
i don't know, i'm just your run of the mill music fan. i like every kind of music so naturally i'm drawn to this festival. i'm not that interested in calexico, so i might check another band out when they are playing or hang out at my camp site. wait a minute, i just thought of something - since i'm not that interested in them, no one should be. in fact, there is so much to do at bonnaroo while they are playing i think the best possible activity to choose would be to show the people who like them that they are wrong about the art they like and i am right. in fact their fans must be idiots. my mission is to prove that my opinions about music is right and everyone else is wrong.
i can't believe people are so hardcore about one in over 60 bands at a three day festival. i have a list of bands (dave and friends being one) i can't wait to see, and i bet 79,999 other bonnaroo attendees each have entirely different lists than anyone else going, and we will all walk away with smiles on our faces. isn't that what makes this festival special?
I'm not sure I understand why Dave & Trey's collaboration has caused such a rift between DMB & Phish fans. I personally like both, and the Dave & Friends tour was a dream come true for me (except for the part that included Neil Young). I think the two artists compliment eachother.
When two tremendously talented artists (3 if you include Timmy) join forces like this, we all win.
Sometimes I think that people feel a band should be a band, and personal exploration by the members is wrong. I believe that it keeps thier music from being stale. I can't remember the last time I saw Dave so happy than when I saw them on tour. He seemed so humbled by the experience.
I'm curious if any of the "critics" have seen Dave & Friends live. I saw them in Hartford & MSG, and I enjoyed the shows alot.
What I'm most concerned about here though is the stereotyping of DMB fans. When the whole Dave party began, it was a loving community, and the point I want to make is. WE ARE STILL HERE. We come in peace, and we are not all out to puke on yer lawn.
First hey everyone! I'm new to this board but have been following the listserve for a while now. Like someone said earlier I was suprised to hear all the hatrid, dislike, whatever you want to call it toward DMB phans. If anyone truly loves the jamband scene how can they talk so much s**t about other music lovers?!?! And I do recognize that there are irresbinsible and rude phans...but you could say this in regards to almost any band. Look at phish...there are those who stereotype thier followers as all about the drugs, not caring about the music. While this is true in some cases, there are also thousands of kids who are the most kind and interesting people you may meet at a show. (I love phish just want to make that clear) I dont think everyone should be freaking out about the vibe at roo this year. I am a HUGE DMB fan! And since the begining or bonnaroo i have been praying for him to be there...but it didnt stop me the past 2 years when the lineup came out and there was no mention of Dave. My point is...I think the majority of peeps there will have the same outlook and dedication to THE MUSIC as i do. After all is it all about the music is it not? Sure you will probably run into a few idiots along the way...but they were there the last 2 years too in case no one was watching. Just ignore them and enjoy the scene. Fighting and being negative will only make it worse! Here's to a great weekend of love peace and music. I can't wait!!! See you all there. ;D
