Biography:
Cults, like many of their “indie” music peers, hail from New York. They gained notoriety in 2010 when they posted music they made for their friends to a Bandcamp page. Apparently more than two people use Bandcamp and other people heard their stuff. The song “Go Outside” made the rounds around a few popular music blogs and suddenly Cults found themselves with more attention than they ever expected.

Cults released those three songs as an EP which was followed by an eponymous full-length album. Though the writing and recording is handled by Madeline and Brian, they do tour with a full band. If you are like me and you find Madeline to be very attractive then let me stop you right there—Madeline and Brian are a couple, last I heard.

For fans of:
Wild Nothing, The Drums, Real Estate, Asobi Sesksu, Foster The People, Peter Bjorn and John, Those Darlins nostalgic pop-rock/doo wop with plenty of reverb.


What to Expect:
Though it may infuriate the more dedicated Parrotheads, I firmly believe Cults sounds like the beach. Their upbeat, catchy reverb-soaked sound always makes me think of a sunny day by the ocean except the steel drums have been replaced by a glockenspiel.

I have seen these guys twice—once headlining The Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta and once opening for Foster The People (fellow Bonnaroo artists Reptar played before Cults at the Foster The People show). The attitude of their show attendees typically reflected their musical output—fun, relaxed and mostly inoffensive. Cults are the type of band I like to listen to when I’m relaxing with an alcoholic beverage on a sunny if you’re into that sort of thing. I think they will be a great day time tent act and if you like their record you should check them out live.

Hip Hop Side Note:
These guys have a real affinity for hip hop. Oblivion told Pitchfork that his dream collaboration is to work with MF Doom (http://pitchfork.com/features/guest-lists/8005-cults/). They also have said they’d like to make a hip hop mix tape with people like Freddie Gibbs and Lil’ B. In fact, they actually performed with Gangsta Gibbs last year in New York as seen here
