“I’m just too damn old to start over” - Nick Saban
I still think he's done getting new jobs. He's 62. He could go 7-5 the next 4 seasons and retire at 66 with more than enough money. Also, as the article states, Mack Brown has got them back from their rocky start to 6-2 even if they drop their last 3 (which is a definite possibility), he may have still bought himself another year by beating Oklahoma. To get Saban, they would have to write a big f*cking check. Then again, they have a new AD who does not have the loyalty to Mack Brown that their former one did, so he may just go for it.
Edit: Lastly, I have not forgotten that he denied the f*ck out of the Bama job until the press conference where they announced him.
New AD, I think Mack Brown is out. The only way I could see them keeping him another year is if there are no viable candidates.
I predicted it was Brown's last year going into this season, but I think it will depend on how his season ends. The USC job being open also complicates things because those would be two destination jobs open in one offseason, so it would dilute the candidate pool some because, as you alluded to, Texas is a program where hiring an up and comer would be a hard sell. Their fan base wants wins now, so the university would have to throw money at a marquee name like Saban or an ex-NFL coach.
On an unrelated note, given all the stuff going on with Incognito and his reputation for being dirty, Taylor Lewan should probably chill on this kind of stuff if he wants to do well in the draft.
Unless they find a dead hooker in his trunk, that dude is going in the top-10. He would've gone in the top-20 this year, for the record.
I already have my "please for the love of god draft him" man crush. Kyle Van Noy. I'll give you shut-in FBS fans a moment to Google him.

They're a non-SEC team, therefore the majority of people here probably don't know much (or anything) about him.
So the correct insult would have been shut-in SEC fans. Step up yo game, son!
I don't know much about him because BYU doesn't play Tennessee this year, and I don't think they've been on television much this year. Also, they are not in the picture for the national title. Sorry I have a wife, kids and a job, so I can't know every player on all 125 FBS teams.
I'm combining insults to save us all some time and effort over here. We know there will eventually be some FCS/Fordham jab, as well as an SEC superiority complex comment, so I'm just getting everything out of the way now.
For the record, Van Noy is a 3-4 OLB and if he was in the SEC he would be getting Clowney-level buzz. Clowney gets the most hype (and rightfully so), but Anthony Barr and Van Noy could both end up being better pro's.

Or an FCS inferiority complex rearing its head earlier. Whichever.
It's not so much about SEC superiority as region in this case. I would venture bacon probably knows more about Van Noy and almost certainly knows more about Barr just because of where he lives. For what it's worth, I think UCLA is going to get a lot more buzz in the next couple years as Mora seems to be starting out as one of those pro coaches who didn't work out then comes to college and wrecks shop. I think I have said it here somewhere, but it bears repeating that I think the Pac-12 is the #2 conference in college football, and the gap between them and the SEC has been rapidly decreasing over the last couple years.
I've only pumped the FCS facetiously, you do realize that, right? All the "purity" and "doing things the right way" nonsense talk from some in here lead to me pumping up the FCS as a purer version of pure since they aren't big money-grabbing programs. FCS has one thing above FBS, the playoff system, and that's it. If the FBS pulled its head out of its ass and copied that system the world would be a better place, and you SEC fans would have a legitimate stance as superior conference (the widespread inter-conference mingling would give a substantial sampling size for such declarations).
Pac-12 is the most entertaining, imo, and the Big East or AAC or whatever the f*ck it is is like watching high school. I'm glad they stuck together for basketball purposes, though.

The larger playoff format that FCS teams have is never coming to FBS, but they are at least moving in the right direction next year, and yes, the AAC is terrible. Just terrible.
I don't get why the FBS is getting credit for a four-team playoff. Great! You stopped being the most idiotically stubborn people ever and only marginally improved the situation!
It should be at least 16 teams, but I would do 32 and have a selection special the way that basketball does it. 4 teams is facing the right direction without actually moving in it.

It's because they are finally moving in that direction after it appeared the NCAA was going to stick by it no matter what because of bowl money and "tradition". Even the FCS model started with four teams back in the day and they probably had much less of money issue to deal with. I understand there are some bowls that have been around forever and have history behind them, but nobody cares about the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Watch it. Even the fans for the teams playing don't show up.
I'm not sure how you can compare the two. 1-AA was formed in 1978 with a four-team playoff, and by 1987 it had expanded to 16 teams with 10 automatic bid conferences. That's a level of growth & change the FBS has never, ever had and will likely never get to. It took nearly a decade of BCS-bashing before they even entertained the idea of changing. Maybe once those clowns see that the playoff gets them infinitely more viewers they'll snap out of their traditionalist funk and make some larger-scale changes, but nothing in their history indicates that is likely.
It's one of the biggest drawbacks to college football.

I was only using it on the idea that their playoff started small and expanded when it proved to be a good idea. I think the four team playoff will only be temporary with the FBS as well. It makes too much sense, and like you said, a quarterfinal playoff game will draw far more viewers than an C-USA v. AAC bowl game. I think the main thing holding it back is that there are bowls that have long traditions with certain schools. The idea that the Rose Bowl would not have a Pac-12 and Big 10 school playing is enough for some people to flip sh*t even if they like the idea of a playoff.
USA Today released their new list of FBS's coaches salaries. It is worth noting that Butch Jones (and probably Bielema too) is artificially high due to a $500k signing bonus and a $1.4mil buyout to Cincinnati. His normal base salary is $2.95mil.

The thing is, we can say all we want about people not caring about these mediocre bowl games, but they wouldn't have added them in the first place, and wouldn't still be playing them if they weren't generating revenue and bringing in viewers. It really wasn't that long ago that there were less then 20 bowl games a season, but college football popularity has been growing exponentially, to the point where we get MAC and AAC games on ESPN during the week. The bleachers might be at 60% capacity, but enough people watch to create huge profits.
I think the playoff will expand to 8 teams sooner than later, but the current bowl system isn't going anywhere.

We disagree on pretty much everything football-related but I'm 100% on board with this. Guy just makes plays. I watched BYU and Boise State a couple weeks back and he seemed to be in on every play. There was another game I watched about a month back, I'm pretty sure it was against Middle Tennessee...? Anyway, in that game he was just dominant.
On expanding the 4-team playoff, Business Insider had this article two weeks back which was cool:
FSU vs Miami and Oregon vs Stanford are already huge games but could you imagine how crazy things could get for a single-game elimination game like that? It can't be long before they move to a format like this. There's just too much money in it. 8-game playoff by the 2016 college football season (let's hope).
Whoa whoa whoa. To hell with LSU. This is the one week a year I hate Les Miles.
Paging @stratsg90
Don't mess with Les! This is their national championship game. The Tiger receivers are going to give the Bama D nightmares (assuming Mettenberger mans up). Geaux Tigers!
But seriously, a spread of 12.5 isn't that crazy. But a 55pt over/under? That's insane

You're ignoring the Louisiana Lafayette game, Dave Maynar?! /s
I want Stanford to upset Oregon. Don't really care about the outcome of Baylor and Oklahoma.
Damn it. I looked at ESPN for the games and forgot that under Scores that it auto sorts it to just top 25 games. Also, I know nothing about ULL v. Troy. I will go ULL because I like "Ragin Cajuns" as a team name where as Troy Trojans just seems redundant.
P.S. I totally feel like the celeb guest on Gameday now when they get asked about random low tier games.
We disagree on pretty much everything football-related
Hey, it's not my fault you insist on being wrong about things in the NFL thread.
I read that article on the 8-team playoff and it makes some good points. I'd go even bigger, but they have the right idea. Like you said, regional single-game playoffs for a chance at a national title would be bigger cash cows than anything they do now.

I think its very possible. My ACC loyalty is hoping for a Stanford upset tonight to pave the way for FSU to get in, and let everything else sort itself out.
