A few other inforoosters and I had an idea a while back and just never posted about it. The question to be answered is how far does your average bonnaroo attendee walk during the entire festival? If we can get a group of folks that have pedometers and a notepad, it could be really helpful for people who want to be in the right physical conditioning to make their bonnaroo easier on their bodies. Just clip your pedometer on whenever you leave camp, and make note of your steps/distance at the end of your rooday. Then we could all report our findings afterwards and share it on here. Anybody in?

i was actually talking about this yesterday and had decided I was going to wear a pedometer the whole time. Although mine will be a little different than most because I am doing day parking, but either way, I am curious. All I know is that I always lose weight at Roo

I have an app that include a pedometer, but I know there are solely pedometer apps as well. The problem is, I doubt my phone will be on the whole time for lack of a way to charge it. That and I feel Bonnaroo is one of a few great opportunities I get a year to go off the grid. Otherwise I would do it, I was actually curious about this after last year. We might have an old pedometer lying somewhere around the house...

It can be deceiving. I wore one at Coachella a couple of years ago and it varied quite a bit day to day, in part based on how much I danced. One day counted twelve miles on a fitbit digital pedometer. It's accurate to within a few yards of a quarter mile under normal circumstances. Sunday was a low day at eight miles. I can assure you I didn't walk that much, Coach just isn't that big and we were camped very close. Dancing all day will send that thing through the roof however.

Actually, I think dancing steps should be counted for this purpose. The point of the project is to give people a good idea of what improvements they could make to their exercise routines in the months leading up to Bonnaroo in order to be in prime condition going in. Dancing is energy being used aerobically, so let's keep that in the equation.

If I can get my Fitbit Flex before Roo (worst release of anything, ever), I will wear it the whole time. It would be interesting see my sleep stats at Roo as well.

Yes, any form of aerobic exercise should be logged. Well, you may want to remove your pedometer for roosex. Personally I can't think of a comfortable place to clip, but that's a whole other box of sausages. Walking, yes. Dancing, yes. I'll set up a googledoc spreadsheet with entries for all participants as time gets closer. I'm assuming you're in, Nigel?

Geez are these numbers right? 23 miles in one day? I always figured I walk maybe 5-10 miles a day there, but nothing like this...... Were you camped far away and did you go back to camp often?

I camped in Tent Only, I'm basically only there to sleep.
I guess i have to think that even my Thursday-Saturday numbers might seem crazy to normal people. I enjoy walking, it's where i feel most at peace and at home. When the live music isn't going I spend a lot of time walking around; people watching, watching the debris of the night before, or just drifting. This year I'll be there with my girlfriend instead of alone, plus i think i'll be doing less partial sets than i ever have before, so the numbers will be a bit smaller than this. And again Sunday was me intentionally pushing myself to around 52,000 steps, mostly cause i'm crazy. I think if you move around from stage to stage throughout the day 8-13 miles in a day might be sorta realistic (20-28 thousand steps.) The more you stick to a specific stage, the less walking required obviously :-)
It'll be fun to see how much movement this year makes requires.
