A friend that I will be going to Bonnaroo with has allergies to pollen and things like that. Nothing life threatening but can be very bothersome. With it being such a rough allergy season right now, I was wondering if anyone knows if this will be an issue at Bonnaroo? If so, what is the best way to keep that under control? Thanks!

back home in PA i have problems with my allergies all the time and once summer picks up i usually take an Allegra every day. I make sure i bring a bottle of it to roo every year but for some reason never really find myself needing to take it while im there.

Depends if your friends reaction is more respiratory or ocular. If its a sneezy/congestion/runny nose thing I honk Zyrtec might be a good choice as its less likely to cause drowsiness as some of the others (Benadryl). Prob safer with alcohol consumption too. If ur friend is more of a red watery and itchy eye sufferer then topical drops are superior to pills as the pills dry the eyes thus making the problem worse. Pataday or Lastacaft are nice cuz they're once a day dosing. But they are prescription only and $$$. 2 similar eye drops went OTC a few years ago and are much cheaper. Look for Zaditor or Alaway and use twice a day starting a few days before and thru Roo. Dual mechanism prevents and reverses ocular allergies. Sorry so wordy but hopes this helps your group enjoy Roo!
Are you a Doctor? You sound like one.
Zaditor has a generic now. Zyrtec still causes drowsiness. Try Allegra or Claritin. Both have cheap generics and don't cause drowsiness. The key is to get on them now and take them daily. It's too late to stick a finger in the hole once the dam breaks.

I have horrible allergies and have usually not had too bad a problem at bonnaroo. I take allegra and recently have started taking the zaditor for eye allergies. The biggest issue for me has always been after the fact. Dealing with four days of dust can be tough on the respiratory system. I would recommend some saline spray to flush out every morning. It will help with allergens but also flush out some of the dust

My friend and I both have extremely bad allergies and asthma. I am currently in my 2nd year of allergy shots.... We both take our regular Zyrtec and preventative inhaler every day and have never had any issues at Roo - not even when it was super dusty. It really makes no sense, because it should make us very ill, but this is my 8th Bonnaroo and have not had any issues yet.

me too- I used to have really bad asthma + allergies, and even when I went during the worst of mine (when I was on daily meds for both, which I hated), I didn't have any trouble.
my allergies are much better now, I rarely take any meds other than an occasional Claritin or a couple days of pataday drops, so I am hoping this year is just as easy. maybe it's just roo magic.
I have asthma and allergies. Last year was my first roo, and I'll be back on the farm this year. My allergies weren't really a problem. However, the dust was pretty fierce and created some serious problems for my asthma. I was really having trouble breathing. I used my inhaler and over the counter asthma pills (ephedrine) to manage. I also used a bandana to cover my mouth and while in particularly bad areas.
If you plan on camping in tent only, pick a spot in the middle away from the roads. The tents on the edge get a thick coating in dust. I think this really helped.
Last year, I had just gotten back from a study abroad in China a week before roo. So, I definitely think the lingering smog in my lungs didn't help. But I certainly won't be going back unprepared.
I get really affected by the pollen, dust, and grass. I always wear a dust mask and/or bandana. The first couple of visits, I was fine, but in both 2010 and 11 I came home with serious sinus/upper respiratory infections. Then, I discovered the magical treatment of a neti pot, and now use it when at Roo, and didn't get sick last year. I'll be bringing it again this year.
