This conflict is gonna drive me crazy! I've seen M&A before, but I really dig their music. Anyone know what kind of show Alt-J puts on? I can never really understand what he's singing in their recordings...
Maybe this seems stupid. But I factor in when and where the show is. I don't wanna see a rap show at 12pm if it's my first of the day... I'm not warmed up yet. Maybe if they type of music is different decide based on something like... will I be too rambunctious to enjoy something that entices a slow arm sway.

Alt-J was good but not great IMO, though some may disagree. They are very true to their album, and considering its a complex album it was cool, but at times they seemed to be going through the motions. They also teased a few jams during songs but never went into them - some improvisation could go a long way for them. Since you've never seen them I would check them out though, just try and get there early because this will be a packed set.
Read the lyrics next time you listen, it will help you connect better and will help in understanding his accent!

As a fan of both, I can say that Alt-J is a better overall band. I've not seen M&A yet, and I'll still be attending Alt-J. Very solid live band that is going to grow in the coming years.
I've never head of Maps and Atlases. Maybe I'll take a listen, but I'm pretty much set for Alt-J. Ready to get down. There is always something I wondered about though, I watched a video of them live playing Taro and noticed that the guitar player uses to make the main chorus noise, looks like a round metal piece. Anyone know what that actually is? Just curious.
I have obsessed and obsessed over this conflict to the point that I am just going to go to the Cinema Tent for the PS Rocky Horror thing...
I assume that there will be a line for Rocky Horror. So I'm planning on listening to Alt-J on This while in line at the Cinema Tent. Its going to be a packed show and I'll likely not be able to see the band perform regardless. So I think this is a win-win for me.
For the OP, I think maybe it depends on who you are seeing before. If not Japandroids, then as I said above, Alt-J is going to be the most packed show of on Thursday. If you're fine possibly being far back, then I'd go with Alt-J.

Alt-j for sure, no question about it. This band is exploding like nothing I've ever seen before. I first heard of them when the lineup came out, made my friends give them a shot, and I honestly don't know anyone who hasn't heard them and fell in love. I haven't been to a bar with a jukebox in the past month and not heard at least one of their songs play.
I'd say they've made their way to being my #1 set to see at roo this year.

Just pretend Alt-J is the unofficial Thursday headliner and the packed tent will be a little easier to swallow. I like M&A but this is my one chance to catch Alt-J since I slept on their other shows that were semi-local. I want to see as much of Paper Diamond and Allen Stone as possible while still catching all of Alt-J's set. This will involve running and probably a bad spot for all 3 but we haven't really had a Thursday in recent memory which didn't have a tent (or two) that was absolutely slammed at some point during the night, so this is still par for the course (except this year my personal desire to see a lot of the acts on Thursday has gone up significantly).
i still never understand why people dont come in on thursday. when i went in 2010, i saw some of my favorite shows that day, there was virtually no line at the water place and it was just an awesome time...
Went to see Alt-J in Columbus a month or two ago in order to possibly minimize conflicts. After seeing them, they're now in my top 3-4 must see shows. They absolutely kill it live
Alt-J has gone from "eh, i'll check these guys out" to one of my most anticipated shows. I am really digging on maps and atlases, but Alt-J has had too much time to consume me.
This conflict really bums me out. Thursday was PERFECT with no conflicting bands until they changed the schedule.
I'm so torn, I want to see both of these bands so badly. I figured the pros of the M&A show would be that it would be way less crowded and I would get a chance to get really close to the band. But, FUCKING ALT-J.
I've decided that I'm definitely going to go to Alt-J. When I had listened to them before it was in the context of my Bonnaroo playlist, but now that I've listened to their album straight through a couple times, I'm totally hooked. Hopefully I'll be able to catch M&A on Friday though.
