We usually drive straight through, but we leave from Toronto area as well. It usually takes us about 13 hours. Except for the year of hell construction in Kentucky.
The only place we've stopped is the Louisville Slugger Museum, but our friends stop all over the place. It's a pretty manageable drive, on the way up. On the way back, plan for it taking longer and you'll probably be stopping more. We cross over in Detroit and have never had problems crossing the border.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
Make sure you have lots of good tunes.... It's a pretty un-eventful drive for the majority of it (ie. through Michigan and Ohio). I would do my grocery, booze, tobacco, etc. shopping in Kentucky. We usually stop in Bowling Green, KN and get all of our supplies. Try to leave Toronto so that you avoid any early morning or afternoon rush hour through Toronto or Detroit.

Thanks for the info!
We're planning to leave Toronto late Tuesday night, like 1 or 2am and arrive in Nashville in Wednesday afternoon. So we should be alright for traffic. It does mean we'll be driving through Detroit in the dark! But it should brighten up once we hit the states. Really looking forward to it now!

There is nothing quite like the feeling of seeing other cars on the 401 that are going to Roo. Orrrr when you see an Ontario license plate at a truck stop in godknowswhere Tennessee at 3am when you haven't slept. It's instant friendship, high fives and excited smoke breaks with lovely strangers.
It really energizes you and reminds you that the road trip may suck at some points, but it's definitely all worth it!
