This has been my 6th bonnaroo, 3 times GA, 1 time volunteering, and the past 2 years staff with festival parking. Being staff we hear a lot of what goes on at Bonnaroo and this year I heard from many people that they either had things stolen from them by security this year including money, wallets, jewelry or security charged them to get into the pit for Tom Petty, which in my mind is stealing because they had no right to charge anyone for that. This is a facebook message posted by one of my supervisors...
"If anyone went to Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and saw the Axis Security, Inc. safety staff charging people to get into the pit for Tom Petty please email info@bonnaroo.com and tell them what you saw. We must not let this aggression stand!"

That's really surprising to me. Security was super-awesome every time I had contact with them. I'm bummed that not everyone had such a good experience!
The two security staff members who searched my RV actually went so far as to tell us to remove all cash/credit cards/valuables/iPhones/etc. from the rig before we got out. CYA to be sure, but good CYA.
I heard some sketchy stories of the bag checkers at the arch but all my experiences were 100% awesome.
I did see it first hand. It only happened once but there was a guy, dude looked like he'd be cool, but he was searching EVERYTHING you had on you very thoroughly. When they found some favors on a guy in front of me they at first seemed like they were gonna make a big deal of it and call over their boss but "decided" to let the person into centeroo. They took his shiz and after the person walked away the guy turned to his co-worker, who was also searching the shiz out of people, and said "Got me some diggity's!" and pocketed it. It's one thing if you didn't pack well and your funny stuff gets confiscated, but it seemed super uncool to me that these particular dudes were just there stealing peoples stuff.
But that was the only shady experience I saw coming through the main arch, the only entrance I used all weekend.

Also, the volunteers have no right to take anything from you. They are there to inform you that you can not enter with it. It is your choice to turn away or leave it with them.

At the centeroo entrance (not the arch) at about 5 am Saturday. Security was harassing a guy trying to get in. I guess he jumped a rail (I didn't see this part) since it was closed all the way back. When I walked up 2 security guys were laughing at him telling him he had to go all the way to the beginning, walk around the rails and come back even though there was no line. This was bullying straight up. Their only goal was to show off their power and humiliate this guy.
I understand this is a safety concern. No one should jump those rails, but in this instance it was very clear that wasnt the rationale. It was all about power dynamic and showing off for their friends.

I saw that happen once in '09, the dude was just pocketing any party favors he found in people's bags. Pretty lame.

There was actually an AMA type thing on /r/bonnaroo a few weeks ago with one of the dudes that works for the contracted security company

The dude I saw get his NO NO's pocketed by a volunteer was pretty obviously scared that he was gonna land in legal trouble because of it. They pretended like when they found something they were suppose to call their boss who would in turn refer the matter to the local police. The guy actually thanked then after they "allowed" him to proceed into centeroo sans his stuff. If I weren't savvy about the way things work, or a first timer, I'd have been scared as balls and did the same thing.
But like I said that was the ONLY instance I ran across. Other than that those folks were just doing there thing, no static at all.

My RV is a dirty car but they told me the same thing which I thought was cool. I had nothing but great experiences with security and pretty easygoing bag searches. The only stuff I sneak in is sealed water bottles full of schnapps and mini liquors in my shoes. It's not as if I'm too worried due to that but it was nice not having them tear apart my bag full of stuff every time I went through. I think having your open waters/misters already dumped probably helps a good bit too.
