The time has come to fix Thursday. Thursday has always been one of the greatest days of the festival and I have been understanding with the reluctance of the organizers to expand the Thursday lineup. Now with the amount of people that show up Wednesday and Thursday morning the festival grounds are near capacity attendance and without the two main stages open overcrowding is a serious issues.
There is no reason to think that any less people will start showing up early, in fact it would seem more and more people will come Wednesday night every year. The only solution is to schedule acts on Which and/or What. I'm not saying a Thursday headliner. What I am saying is book a few extra small Thursday acts for the tents and then move the larger acts to a stage where a larger crowd will be more comfortable. For example this year they could of had acts such as Alt-J and Father John Misty on a stage with a few extra small bands in the tents to spread out the crowds.
This is your opportunity to make a move before it becomes a serious issue SP/ACE, your move.
This is not quite relevant, but was FJM THAT packed? I showed up three shows early and slowly worked my up so that I was on the rail for that show and I'm very short, so I could not tell just how many people were at that tent. All I knew is that we were bunched reallyyyyy tight up there. Could FJM honestly have played a stage?

Yes. My God. We made it into Centeroo fairly early, and EVERY show was packed, to the point where it was tough to even move around.

Time for a Thursday headliner.
Yeah, I just admitted to myself that it was gonna wayyyy too packed. Aside from getting up front for FJM I just chilled in the back of all the shows I went to. I do agree, idk about a Thursday headliner, but they should have some smaller acts to fill the tents and then put the bigger acts on the stages.

I think it's time to open Which. Like you say Bacon there is no reason for them to grab a headliner but just use it for traffic flow. I would say from 2011 onward a larger number of folks are heading in early certainly prior to the music kicking off.
AC could have easily moved Alt-J and maybe one other surging act onto Which and added a couple more smaller acts into the stages. They may also want to make the Miller Lite stage a bit bigger, I was at a couple shows this year there and it was beyond packed both times.

My idea was to open Which just simply for room alone. If you do not wanna book anymore acts, show Bonnaroo 365 sets on the stage screen and side screen of Which. It would at least keep some crowding down while allowing What to remain closed to Friday. Plus I think a lot of people would watch previous complete shows of certain acts (Jack White, Phish, Pearl Jam, Beach Boys etc. etc.).

Yeah, I agree with that...doesn't have to be a, quote, headliner, just as long as they spread the acts out across more stages. As much as I like the Wednesday afternoon open, the price of it is the massive, tightly-packed crowd. Catch-22, I guess.
Edit: as Pondo says, showing screencasts of previous acts would be good. First-run movies would be cool, too.

Definitely think putting some artists on Which is the way to go. Sleigh Bells, Phantogram, Alt-J are all bands in recent memory that could easily have been a Thursday "headliner" on the Which stage.

Another option would be to move a band to a soft "headliner" spot. I thought The National, as Thursday's "headliner" would have been perfect this year.
I really thought this year was going to be the year for a Thursday night Which act. In fact, heard it through the grapevine it was going to happen. Very disappointed it did not.

Yeah I'm definitely OK with this idea. I was camped pretty much in front of the Arch in TO and we watched as an uber-enormous crowd began to grow and grow in front of the Arch starting at 10:30-11:00. The line stretched well past the portos and vendors in Pod 3 and beyond. It was jaw dropping. Definitely didn't see that last year. We waited until almost 3:00 before trying to get in. And once we got in Great Googley Moogley was it packed EVERYWHERE! A couple of Which shows could have helped....if you could hear them that is
I've suggested this previously, but I'll do it again. Have a poll on the Bonnaroo website a couple weeks before schedule announcement. Let fans pick two bands from Thursday lineup to play Which Stage. Problem solved.

I say they just open up the What field even if they don't have anybody play What. People will naturally spread over there to hang out, get food, toss frisbees, etc. Like somebody else said they could even show movies/videos/old performances on the screens.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
yeah, Alt-J was WAY too crowded. I couldn't get room to dance and that made for a huge personal tragedy I can even see (maybe) keeping What closed till Friday but what's the harm in opening Which?

There is no way I would be hanging in the What or Which field with nobody playing if FJM or Alt-J were playing in a tent. I may as well be back at camp.

Definitely agree something needs to change. The initial problem i have on thurs is just trying to get to TO from the shuttle drop off. It gets harder every year. Tent shows get so crowded I find myself so far out that I can not see the stages.
Another option would be to move a band to a soft "headliner" spot. I thought The National, as Thursday's "headliner" would have been perfect this year.
i've said for a couple years that they should do this. book a band from the top 15 of the lineup to play thursday on the which(though i might have gone with a more fun band like passion pit), and then 'promote' a couple of the thursday bands to open for them that have blown up since they were booked/scheduled. this year i would have gone with walk the moon and alt-j. then move a couple bands from the miller lite stage to the tents. so it could look something like this: walk the moon 8-9 alt-j 10-11 passion pit 12-1 that would definitely spread the crowd out. glad to hear that it might be consideration druid. fingers crossed yet again for next year.

Something like this is exactly what I mean. Big names but nothing huge. Just to spread out the crowds a bit
Thursday was already crowded in '08. But in '11 & '12, with the gates officially opening on Wednesday? Damn near impossible. There have been certain Thursday shows I couldn't see at all, and I'm 6'3". Something needs to be done.
Also, hopefully this will minimize the number of bands who should be late-night, but get stuck with a daytime slot (SBTRKT, Animal Collective '09, etc).
That walk the moon crowd was crazy. I guess that's what I needed to get on board with the which stage opening. No point in not doing it at this point. It seems like some of the people on Thursday could have been switched with other less popular artists later in the weekend, it seems their Thursday selection especially WTM, FJM, alt j, japandroid, were all super hyped from coachella onwards. Getting great truly unknown acts would also keep the roads down I think. The high profile Thursday acts are the real cause of the overcrowding,
This thread is so on point. They don't have to do anything major, just move things around a bit to thin the crowds out. I thought Alabama Shakes was packed last year, but Alt-J was insane this year, & it's only going to get worse. As much as I hate to promote putting anything else on Which with the sound issues, it would make a big difference on Thursdays.
