Did anyone else find it strange that Which was not even set up yet on Thursday? I don't mean sound check ready, but it wasn't even fully constructed yet. Presentation wise, it seems weird to be still constructing part of the festival, while the festival has already started. I hadn't noticed this in previous years, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.
Would everyone pay $50 more per ticket if it meant screens at all the tents and/or Thursday acts on the Which?
I kind of feel like they would have done this by now if there weren't some huge financial/logistical roadblocks preventing this.
I agree that this is likely the main issue, but they are still generating more revenue on Thursdays than in the past, strictly from food vendors. Bonnaroo gets a percentage of the sales, and they are selling a hell of a lot more Spicy Pie on Thursdays than in the past. Not saying they are making enough to pay for Jack White, but it is something.
Plus most people aren't even requesting a big name headliner, just a mid level band to free up space in the tents.

When we got up Thursday morning, we saw a couple forklifts driving by loaded up with the fencing they used to cordon off the VIP section at the tents and what looked like the decking for the ADA platforms at the tents, so they may have been a little behind schedule in general.

Must be why they were still calling for volunteers the week of the festival.

I wrote it off to the weather. Wednesday had a nice drying effect due to the heat, but roofan said it was an absolute mess before that.

That's not really all that strange... Which is a hydraulic trailer stage... These things are great- they set up quick with a minimal crew, they can be expanded with extra trailers easily (for sound wings, backstage, etc), and most important, they are mobile, and you can make some good money by owning one (I rent them about 4 times a year for different events my organization sponsors). However, the biggest drawback is they are dangerous in extreme weather and high winds. If anyone else remembers the Indiana State Fair stage collapse from 2011, you'll recognize that. usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-04-12/indiana-state-fair-stage-collapse/54231792/1 I'm thinking the weird weather early in the week postponed full setup.
While I'd like them to open Which on Thursday, I don't see it happening simply because of noise ordinances. Which puts out a lot more sound than any of the tents. Maybe they could figure out a way to open it on Thursday, but lower the volume?
One thing I did find cool about the crowds on Thursday was that there tens of thousands of people getting into acts they had never heard of/heard before. Yeah, some of the Thursday acts are pretty popular, but I would still bet at least half the crowd at any of the shows at any of the tents on Thursday had, at the very least, never listened to the act they were watching.

Agree with this thread entirely. With the official opening Wednesday, Thursday is now almost as full as the rest of the weekend, without the two biggest fan dispersers.
Also, opening the What for Paul's soundcheck probably would have made the crowds at Purity Ring and FJM considerably more manageable.

Could we maybe open Centeroo up a bit earlier too? By noon Thursday there are a ton of people there all set up and bored and looking for something to do.
Also in general it would be nice if some of the Centeroo activities could start a bit earlier on a daily basis. I'm thinking Ford Tent, Adult Swim, etc.

FTR I would rather them not change anything than open Which with reduced volume. That would be a horrible idea.
If there is an ordinance issue I'm sure they can work it out with the town. For one they could only have music on there from say 6-11 or something.

Thursday was an amazing night of music, but the crowds were unmanageable. It was difficult just to move. Way too crowded, and it was obvious on Friday as the big stages alleviated the tent crowds that almost everyone had arrived by Thursday. Next year will be even worse if they don't address this. Opening at least the Which Stage feels like a no-brainer.
I agree with the Which stage being utilized on Thursday to spread out the crowds a bit. They don't really need to add any big names than they have now. It could also mean more bands playing in general since the set times will be spread out. It might be good to work out any sound kinks too since they usually seem to have them.
I can understand not wanting to open the what stage field (which means cleaning porta potties, the field, etc.), but keeping the which stage dark on Thursday is complete madness at this point.
