I remember a time when sang was angry that I missed most of Bjork because I baked in the sun at Roo; just like I did with that Kendrick What Stage Show. Where Nas took the goddamn afternoon stage and killed it, and thus killed me.

I don’t remember ever being angry but yeah if you missed Bjotk you fucked up. I don’t think I saw Nas that year? I can’t remember.

I actually wasn't big on that Nas show. Great setlist, great backing band. I felt like he missed / chose to not rap way too many bars.

All fair. My body just doesn't do those hot afternoon shows well and I didn't play it simple, I'm usually up front.
Combination of necessary medications and just burning my legs out. I was basically just on the What Stage ground, sitting up every 15 minutes... lol it's kinda funny from that perspective

De La Soul’s entire catalog is finally streaming everywhere R.I.P. 🌼 Trugoy The Dove 🕊
very excited to listen to all of these again this weekend. My ranking from when I used to listen a bunch pre Spotify was Bulhoone > 3ft > Grind Date (has been on Spotify) > Is Dead > Stakes. Want to see if that changes.

Nice!!! I’m gonna do the same. My ranking was always De La Soul Is Dead, Bulhoone, Steaks Is High, Grind Date, 3 Feet, Anonymous Nobody. I was never into Art Official Intelligence or Bionix when they first came out. But I think it’s time to give those albums another day in court.
I always felt like Stakes Is High is criminally underrated in their catalog.
obligatory content because this is ostensibly a Bonnaroo message board: De La Soul's late night set in 2005 was super great.
My first Bonnaroo was 2006. I wanted to go in 2005 but didn’t have any friends going. Found out a week later that a bunch of people from my hometown were there. Asked them if the saw De La and they didn’t. Bunch of 🤡🤡🤡 Anyway wish I was there to see them. Closest I got to seeing them at Roo is when Damon Albarn brought them out to do Feel Good Inc which was an amazing surprise.

It was my first Bonnaroo. I did Saul Williams/TMV one night but I didn’t do late night the other night for some reason.

Yo I’ve had multiple opportunities to see Saul Williams over the past 20 years and somehow always miss him. I think I’m cursed.

When I was on hiphop message boards in the late 00s I remember most of those guys almost having my ranking exactly reversed. At that point Grind Date was well liked but wouldn't have been worth ranking among the first 4 yet.
I'm most excited about giving Stakes another go this weekend.

Listened to Bulhoone Mindstate this morning. Its the only one that ive made a point to come back to every other year or so on Youtube through this spotify era. One of the most underrated albums imo. It's so chaotic and jazzy in nature, but since it was in '93, the beats / production and flows are not caveman. Idk what happened in '93, but that feels like the year when the genre got modernized and it has 4 of my top 20 albums (BM, Midnight Marauders, 36 Chambers, Doggystyle). I also think it's a little more singularly De La Soul than Stakes is High is. My recollection of Stakes is High is that its good but I'd rather just listen to The Roots, Common, or Mos Def if I'm looking for that feeling. I think this one is like right there with Midnight Marauders but actually much more jazzy, off the wall, silly but sending a serious message.
If you take out the skits, which I'm pretty generous about doing (Aquemini is my favorite album), it's 11 songs.
Ego Trippin, Breakadawn, I Am I Be, I Be Blowin (last two have the same awesome instrumental) are all major for me. The string of 3 tracks in the beginning are so fun, and I even love the intro as a stage setter.
3 Days Later, In the Woods, and Stone Age are just good and fun. Welcomed additions but not on the level of the other 7 I mentioned.
My only complaints aside from the skits (which are actually not that bad) are with the song Area which I think is a dud. And I think Breakadawn would have been a perfect closer.
It's like a 9.5/10 for me I think this album is so delicious and I'll always just sit there with a smile while listening to it for years to come.
So these guys go through their record collection and discuss old albums. This episode is all about Aesop Rock. I’ve only listened to half so far. These guys kinda sound like dweebs but now it’s got me going back through Aesops discography in chronological order. Which if you’re big fan like me, is very rewarding.
