While laying out the groundwork for my trip to Australia this Winter, the dates and initial line-up for the touring Big Day Out dropped. I have since amended the dates of my trip to incorporate this festy. Pretty pumped to not only see Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire again (among others) but also to go to a festival on another continent.
Has anyone else traveled outside N.America for a festival. If so, what was your experience like? Did things differ much?

I will be there! At one of the two Sydney dates that is, and more than likely the 26th. theshining, if you're planning to be at one of the Sydney dates, or if your travels take you here at all, please let me know. It would be great to meet up for a beer or three and show you around my fair city!
I have been to a couple day festivals here (Field Day & Days Like This), but not Big Day Out. There may be some small differences in the festival culture and selection of bands, but ultimately it's pretty similar to what you would expect in the US & (I'm assuming) Canada.
A couple important things to know:
It will be hot as balls out, so hydrate liberally. This year, the Sydney date fell on a freakishly hot day - the single hottest day on record here, in fact (116F / 46C). I would not expect anything quite like that again, but it will more than likely crack into the high 90s or low 100s. I'm sure you've been to Roo enough that I don't need to rehash warnings about the heat and what not.
The hole in the Ozone Layer means we have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the developed world. Don't be a fool - apply sunblock liberally and wear some shades, yo!
The first Sydney date this year falls on Australia Day. It can be a lot of fun, but it's also one of the biggest partying holidays of the year, so it will inevitably attract some people just looking for any kind of party. This includes the unfortunate creature known as the yobbo or bogan.
What's a bogan, you ask? Well, it's not quite a redneck or white trash, but it falls under the same genus. They are easily spotted by their trademark uniform - either shirtless or in a singlet or "wife-beater", can of VB or Bundy & Cola in hand, and a Southern Cross tattoo on one shoulder. They are not to be confused with the usually similarly dressed ocker, who is typically a right bloke. It's difficult to fully articulate the differences, but you will know it when you see it. One is just a bit of a blue collar slob, and the other is more like a redneck that is desperately trying to be a hipster.
Study the photo below, and take particular note of item #1:
But like most of our wildlife here, if you don't bother it, it won't bother you. Ultimately, it's really not all that different from the fratboy contingent at Roo.
If you have any more questions about BDO or Australia in general, please don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks mate! I will be hitting the January 24th Melbourne date. I will be down that way visiting my sister for the holiday season and she is only a 20 minute drive from Flemington Race Course so it all makes sense. I was thinking of going to Sydney as a side trip but I have chosen the Great Barrier Reef instead as I have been to Sydney before.
Fantastic! Melbourne's a great city by the way - have you been before? It has much more of a European feel than Sydney. And I'm just a wee bit jealous since I still haven't been to the Great Barrier Reef (though hopefully that will change within the next few years). Safe travels and have a happy trip!

Still hurting from that Blur cancellation over here. Buuuuttt...
[Festival promoter AJ] Maddah confirmed that it was “one UK band and two US bands” that would be replacing Blur on the 2014 lineup... in response to fulfilling the nostalgia element Blur provided, Maddah replied “the UK band should soothe some of those pains,” adding that negotiations for one of the American bands involved a “guitarist who has TV commitments".
Okay, I'm at a total loss - can anyone think of a American headliner(ish)-sized band with a guitarist on TV? The announcement is coming in three days, but we all know the Internet has destroyed any semblance of patience I may have once had.

Dave Nevarro is the only one who comes to mind. Maybe Janes Addiction is gonna go at it again?

I am thinking I will: Explore in the morning / early afternoon > Toro y Moi > possibly the last 30 minutes of Big Gigantic > Tame Impala > Cosmic Psychos > Mudhoney > probably a few songs from Beady Eye > Arcade Fire > Pearl Jam. Thankfully not too many heartbreaking conflicts here. Anyone got any early afternoon suggestions?
It's a bit tough to tell how long Pearl Jam will play for looking at recent setlists, because I think they're playing extra long for their home region. 10:30 is a bit before curfew, but 2.5 hours is already a hell of a show, so I'm not complaining if they don't play a minute over. All in all, looking like one damn fine day of live music in two weeks and change.
