Deadmau5, LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corporation, Bassnectar, Afrojack, Kaskade, Disco Biscuits, The Crystal Method, Hercules and Love Affair, LA Riots, Dieselboy,
I feel like people like Pretty Lights cause of the process rather than the results. He may have "crafted" that album with 20 artisan musicians, but it's still boring.
I do somewhat agree with this, but I think the combination of all the lights and the band to make for a good final product live.

I respect him because of his process, I like him because the noises he's making sound wonderful in my ears haha.

They are very comparable in my opinion and were both great years. With how much electronic music skyrocketed after those years, it became harder and more expensive to give the electronic side more depth. LCD Soundsystem added it with both Nectar and Mau5 does probably give 2010 the edge. I'm just hoping we get quality acts this year.

I hate Pretty Lights. Mostly because I have hung around Derek personally, and he is such a fuck. Hard to be a fan of a guy like him.

Iv actually met him too... Total douschebag haha. But that goes back to the Kanye discussions that have been clogging the board. Just because a guy is an ass doesn't mean he isn't extremely talented.

I agree, but I really just do not like his music that much either. I feel like I've seen the same PL show 15 times. I know people who are die hard PL fans but he turns me off to his music and I just genuinely don't like it very much.
Pretty Lights is Far too classic rock influenced IMO. NyQuil with a beat.
I don't feel like he fits neatly into any box. He has his chill/ambient stuff (yellow bird, maybe tomorrow, the time has come), his bangers (total fascination, I can see it in your face, ect), and then he has his shitty dubsteppy stuff that i try to ignore (I know the truth)

God knows you always respect my taste in music. The EDM genre is fucking anything with produced sounds and a beat you can dance to now. I don't think its even fair to start throwing deep house funk whatever (Disclosure, ), electronic rock (ratatat, etc), Synth pop (SBTRKT, EPOTS) into the same category as Avicii. As for EDM Area, Harder upbeat EDM, Cheese EDM, dubbystep, whatever, I know what you mean and I am pretty against most of it. I had my phase of EDM "cheese" madness a few years back and they have all died on my playlist except PL who is getting stronger IMO.
So you were serious - you think that Pretty Lights is the best person or act currently making electronic music in the world. Got it.
That's not what I said, at all. But as for my fav in your "cheese" genre, yes, by far. Electronic music is a pretty stupid "genre" to even start to try and say what is and what isn't in it. Even less specific then EDM.

Well there we go. Everything else I have read was talking about how he was extremely messed up half the time and a tool. Is he really 6'9"?
Oh, no doubt he was fucking tweeking his brains out. And yes, the dude is a fucking monster. His shoes were bigger than my head. And I have a big head.
I've never heard one person who's met Derek personally and had anything good to say. Lol
I've met him a few times. I don't have anything bad to say. I'd say I have a different personal opinion of him now than I did say 3 or 4 years ago. But I will say that he has always been nice and receptive. (ALTHOUGH - he was on ANOTHER LEVEL during the show on the farm last year...like holy messed up)

That blew my mind when I read he was that tall. Never really stood out to me that he was that big of a guy.

Giant! Haha his hands are like baseball mitts. No idea how he's not clumsy on that deck every night with those sausage fingers. More power to em.
I've seen him do a line of coke and ketamine backstage before going on. True story. He could barely mumble "Lets touch the stars" as he says every single show. He will also dip down behind his decks and do lines periodically. That's cool whatever you personally like but I've seen it mess him up so much he could barely perform. That's when he lost most my respect.

So you're suggesting I pretend to be a ketamine dealer to meet him?

I always try to stay away from knowing too much about an artist. It can turn ugly. They generally have lives way different then ours they have to dedicate fully to the art of sound.
"I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process."

I'm well aware of his drug use. It sucks and I hope he realizes one day that he has a problem and overcomes it before it overcomes him. It doesn't take away from his talent. I don't really want to discuss that any further, addiction is a sore subject for me personally and socially.

I'm not saying I don't feel bad for him sometimes, and know many people even family who have dealt with addiction. I guess his attitude towards it pisses me off and seeing people try to help him then him doing that in front of them just turned me off big time. Anyways, yeah not a big PL fan but we can get back to Roo talk now.

Snagged this pic of him during Wu Tang just after I met him. He isn't hard to spot as he towers over people.
In case we get him, how is Avicii's live show? I watched his set from Tomorrowland 2012 and it seemed decent. But I remember reading that from people who were at his komati Lollapalooza set a few years ago that his sound or something was messed up and it wasn't a very good show.
