Mayer is possibly the best touring blues guitarist
Whoa, wait. Where would you put Jonny Lang, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks, Samantha Fish, Davy Knowles, Joe Bonamassa, Ana Popovic, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Kenny Wayne Shephard and Susan Tedeschi in the current blues guitarists rankings? I'll leave out Clapton, Haynes, and Guy for now (age and genre concerns in re touring).
I've seen almost all of those guitarists live as well (some several times). All of them are incredible but Mayer at his best tops any of them. He just releases pop records so the average blues fan looks right past his ability.
Edit: anyone who knows me will tell you how obsessed I am with GCJ as well.

Eh. Not sure if you were referring to me, but I'm not an average blues fan - I've been following the blues for 35 years and I don't think he's the best. Very talented, yes. We'll have to disagree there.
I fail to see why Trucks being far-and-away the best slide guitarist on the planet should be used against him.
Thanks for speaking for me. I didn't realize that's what I meant until you said it
Don't be a baby. You said that Trucks is a specialty guitarist in response to me saying he's the best blues guy around right now. I responded saying I don't think that being incredible in one facet of blues guitar means he can't be considered the best overall.

You insinuated that I though that made him less of a guitarist. I was only saying it makes it difficult to compare him to others. I'm sorry I haven't been on the planet long enough to be a "real blues fan". When I reach that level do I automatically become pretentious or can I opt out?

Jesus what crawled up your ass?
I never said you aren't a real blues fan, stop being so butthurt because I disagree with your sentiment that Trucks isn't the top guy because he's a "specialty guitarist."

Why would I care if you have a different opinion? If you'd really like to know why you upset me instead of drawing your own conclusions, you can PM me. I don't think it's necessary to argue like 2yr olds in a thread though.
Is the JMT instrumental or in some other way devoid of Mayer's singing and lyrics? If so I'd probably be game.
Can one of you guys take a time out and answer this? It was a serious questions. Thanks!
It's not instrumental and his singing is actually worse in the Trio because he tries really hard to be Stevie Ray. But luckily there's much less singing in the trio stuff
Yeah, I don't care that much. Continue being salty for no reason, whatever floats your boat.
Delicious Meatball Sub - no, it's not all instrumental. Mayer does Mayer-up some songs, but they do some fantastic covers and I like it, compared to his solo stuff which leaves much to be desired. But yeah, you still get Mayer singing and some very Mayer lyrics to some of the songs.
I never said he wasn't, but acting like he's the unquestioned heir to the Blues throne is just silly.
He's a fantastic guitar player, he's not the best living, the best of the next generation, etc. Maybe if he stopped making weird folky-country sh*t and started banging out blues albums I could take him a bit more seriously. But dressing up like a villain from an old Western and playing acoustic isn't exactly screaming "blues man."

This is exactly what I thought until I saw him this summer. When I first listened to Born and Raised I thought "Well I guess I'm done with Mayer now." But that folky-country stuff translates really well live. As someone who has seen him an embarrassing amount of times, I'd say this is right up there with Continuum as the best album tour.

JMT "Try" is good stuff. I'd recommend the "Where The Light Is:John Mayer Live In Los Angeles" live album as well. That one is broken into three parts.....a handful of Mayer Solo/acoustic stuff you can skip over, some more Trio stuff, and then a full backing band for more songs. The Where the Light is might have more singing than you'd want but I remember really liking it. Haven't heard it in a while though.
PF and LZ reunions are so unlikely and even if they happened. They wouldn't play festivals when they can sell out every major stadium in seconds.
Mayer and Incubus are two of the best live acts I've ever seen. The majority of the public only knows their 3 shiztiest songs. Mayer is possibly the best touring blues guitarist and A Crow Left Of The Murder by Incubus might be my favorite album start to finish of all time.
I could probably get behind Incubus. Their music is the soundtrack to some of my favorite childhood/teenage memories but...Mayer? The best touring blues guitarist? No.

Honest question. Have you ever seen him? I've literally never met anyone who has seen him and hasn't instantly been impressed with his live shows. That includes some of the most skeptical folks
